An idea I saw once and now do, is keep a pillowcase (or make your own) in a trashcan under your workspace and all the little bits and scraps go into the pillowcase. Once it's full, sew up the open end, and now you have a dog or cat bed you can donate to a shelter!

Scraps are also good for making smaller things like underwear or doll clothes. I have also used them to make a base for flower crowns before. I use steel wire fist and then I wrap scrap fabric around the steel wire to make the crown more comfortable. Small bows and keychains are also good things to make from scraps.

I think that kindergartens would be happy to accept some of the bigger scraps maybe. They like to use old milk cartons and empty toilet rolls for the kids to make stuff out of, so they might like fabric as well.

I know how you feel. I'm like a dragon and its pile of gold when it comes to fabric. I've ended up using thick stretchy stuff for coffee cup holders (double it over when you do that, BTW. Single thickness isn't as effective) l, felt and woven fabrics for making small notebook covers, and I specialise in felt plush items more than outfits so I've got plenty of cut offs for stuffing with. I (might) even make a fabric pumpkin with some of my leftovers for Halloween this year!

Im like the same but Im starting to become better Im usually cut them into strips or blocks in all kind of sizes and then I just sew them making new bigger pieces of fabric its kinda relaxing to just chain piece sewing two fabricscraps together, I try to seperate the scraps in different themes like christmas fabric scraps, fall prints and summer/spring and black and white scale. That way I kinda get a fabric that have similar value/ impact. Fall prints are earthy more natural colours and prints, spring and summer prints are more vibrant colours, bright pink, lime green, sky blue, and so on. Im also think seperating them into seperate colours would be good too like sewing green to green. And then it wont even matter if the scraps are squares, strips or irregular in shape

You can crochet plastic shopping bags into really great re-usable tote bags. Like this one: i.pinimg.com/originals/4e/30/4c/4e304cfddf0d3d7d569ddef6db6ac466.jpg a lot of cities don't have plastic shopping bags anymore, but if they do, it's a great way to re-use them.

I LOVED War on Waste, and I have some things that my family does to recycle that I think are pretty cool: I've seen someone make a fabric-ottoman using scraps, then fill it using old plastic bags. My family also reuses take-out containers because they can tend to be both dishwasher and microwave safe, and save us from having to buy Tupperware. When my grandmother was a dressmaker, sewing all the scraps from matching materials together was considered apprentice work because it was good practise for sewing even, clean lines, so I use fabric scraps now that I'm learning to sew. Scraps that are long can be braided together into 2 metre long braids, then sewed into a circle to make place mats, or bigger braids can make rugs.

@livelongandprospermary8796

Fangirl 0101 could be part of a quilt, sewn together as a skirt, sewn into a headband, stuck together and then framed as art, sewn together as a table runner, made into coasters, placemats, chokers (cut into thin strips, lobster clasp or button added), made into bracelets(same as above)....I’m really reaching here but I hope that helps.
@Ali626AMM
@Ali626AMM 7 лет назад
You could see them into a Dresden plate or pinwheel pillow. Those look really fun made from ties and its much easier than doing it with quilting fabric. Or open one up and you'll be really surprised how much fabric is actually there to work with. Look up Dresden plate projects. The pieces are the same shape as ties and you'll be surprised what all can be done with them. I always wanted to make a skirt out of ties, but it takes so many for someone of my size. Good luck.

Yay!! I'm so excited for this mini series because I've been trying to reduce my waste for over a year and made some tote bags, and cotton rounds (which your videos have been helpful in!!) and I have a lot of scraps. Some cotton I have can go into my compost bin if they're too small and that includes some thread too (if they're cotton, because synthetics aren't fun for the environment). So I'm excited since I keep losing my sleeping mask around my flat so I need to make at least 4 more for when I lose a couple of them haha.

Another thing that you can do with little thin scraps of fabric or thread is kumihimo braiding. It is a technique of braiding using a disk or square plate to make a long chord that can be used for loads of different projects (i.e bracelets, belts, handles on bags) and you can braid with scraps of fabric instead of yarns.

I've been wondering how it would work to use cut up fabric bits as stuffing, and I was worried it would lumpy, but your fox and hedgie are cute and lumpless af! I'm going to make a cat a new bed with my scraps. I have a piece of plastic-y fabric that I thrifted over a year ago that I think will work well for the outer layer of the double-layered shell for the cushion (for some reason I find it necessary to use two layers for the shell 🤷‍♀️). I'm sort of dubious about washing a cushion with this type of stuffing. I feel like it will take a really long time to dry and get musty smelling, hence, the plastic-y outer shell that can easily be spot cleaned + a soft cover with a zipper. I dunno why I'm detailing my DIY project in the comments. I guess I'm just really pumped to f*** s*** up in a minimally wasteful way. 🤘🐐 There wasn't a hedgehog so I'm using this goat as the emoji mascot for waste-minimizing badassery.

This is a great idea! I know a place that sews quilts for children who have to stay in hospitals due to illness. after sewing the quilts, the fabric scraps are used to fill dog beds! It is a great way to reuse everything! Look up Quilts for Kids if anyone is interested in making quilts for children at hospitals, it is a great cause.

I've been doing this too with my scraps. Well mostly for my little brother. He loves character plushies but a lot of the games he likes don't sell plushies so we make them. Although transfer paper is a little pricey so I just hand paint them with acrylic paints. We use old pillow stuffing for ours though since we changed our pillows recently.

Hahahahahaha... oh bless you! Three small boxes is nothing. I have an entire room full of fabric, yarn, paper, old clothes, knitted items waiting to be unravelled and the yarn reused, cord, ribbon, buttons, threads, embroidery threads, crewel wool... you get the picture. I have 25 yeaes worth, not getting rid of any as I stopped buying new materials a long time ago so I work through what I have. I only buy vintage yarn and fabric now, it's all about not wasting resources. This is what comes of being a textiles teacher!

I have been holding on to all my little scraps of felt ready to fill up a Totoro plush when I eventually get around to finishing it. I've also held on to the little bits of wool that you cut off when making a pom pom and hope to use it for something too

i usually make chokers and weird stockings... i sew all the fabrics together (i usually go for the kind that looks like this -x-x-x-x-x-x-x-) and then make a new tshirt or stockings or skirt.. it looks really cute and its perfect for the winter since it tents to be thick..

I would love a tutorial on how to make scrunchies! I feel like this would be great for scraps (I feel like you may have already made a tutorial on scrunchies but I can't find it.... Also I know that this is a project done by a lot of people, but I really like your style of videos and find your explanations very clear)

I'm glad you're doing this because it looks fun. Not really sure you're ahead in terms of resources, though, given fabric does decay/compost/have commercial uses. Especially since your time counts as a resource. Transfer paper/ink alone seems like net loss. 😐 That said, you made a great little toy - looking forward to the rest.

A M not all my fabric scraps are 100% cotton though - a lot are poly blends that don't break down in landfill for hundreds if not thousands of years! Plus when stuff breaks down in landfill it also releases a lot of greenhouse gasses, so I think it's better to upcycle from them overall. Especially if it's instead of buying new fabrics to make something like a plushie!

Hey! I have an idea for your scrap fabrics! What if you used them to fix bras? Like bras who have the under wire popping out!

Currently paper crafters are incorporating scraps of fabric in their "junk" Journals. Slip over to some of those groups and offer to send some of your scraps to them. Also really small long bits can be hung from a tree in an old onion bag. Watch as the native birds rummage through the bits for layering their nests.

you could use the scraps to make a blanket/ bedcover thingie (Google sprei, I dont know if there is An english word,basically on top of your bed to keep it clean) as well. different patterns and Colors look adorable for that, and you'd get to use a LOT of your left over fabric. IT makes for a cute housewarming/childrens gift too
