I used to listen to this my senior year of high school. Has it really been over thirty years? Rest in peace, Alan.

Same here. Allan Holdsworth was simply one of the greatest guitarists and improvisers who ever lived. An extraordinary musician. RIP...

Hi there! Here is my humble contribution to Allan Holdsworth memory, transcribing this have been a real adventure! But now i am proud of the result. It's been a while that I wanted to transcribe one of his tunes but I just wasn't able to find the right one. this one have a beautiful chord melody and the acoustic solo is way more accessible than most of his other tunes. This said, I've been really surprised when I realized that he was stretching up to 8 frets for some of his chords!$*&? And that he is doing that on a stratocaster with, you might be aware, have a 25' 1/2 scale length "/$?$%&.... I just hope I will not get too much un-sub because of this one.. lol. With some work I've been able to play these voicings on my telecaster but I need to hold my guitar horizontally and place the higher and lower fretted finger first than lean the middle fingers afterward. Man, there is so much to say about this one.... Regarding the chord notation; I decided to go for the closest to traditional notation possible. Allan Holdsworth notation would have been too confusing for those who are not familiar with. For the chord sequence within 1 bars, I have wrote the mode associated with the sequence... if you are familliar with Allan Holdsworth way of composing this is pretty much how he intellectualize it. Although, I have stick to common terms like 'minor melodic' instead of 'jazz minor' like Allan would do. OK... finally, Allan uses some kind of hybrid modes. This is very personal to him. So for the transcription you will often see something like 'Lydian (add #5)' this mean; he is using the 5th, the #5th and the 6th (three notes in a row) in a given chord sequence. Allan would phrase it like; 'Jazz minor (add b7)' but for the sake of reaching the more musician possible I have phrase it like; melodic minor (add b7). Not too complicated. .............. Have fun! By the way.... in bar 50 he is using his index to phrase the higher note and he his strumming the chord with his thumb. Don't try to play this chord with one hand.... it's just impossible... lol

Love your transcriptions - can't believe someone could play that Dmaj9 in bar 139 that way across 9 frets... pretty sure the lower two voices are on the E and A string (much more playable) - and similarly for other wide chords.

Francois, thanks so much for this surprise! I'm a huge Holdworth fan; I was so sad when he died two years ago. My favorite songs of his are those with long, chordal ballad sections like this one. I've never learned one in its entirety, but I've learned parts from the "Reaching for the Uncommon Chord" book, and they've greatly influenced my playing. Very unusual to hear him on acoustic, for the lead part in this song. Definitely one I'll have to study. -Tom

Some time in the future, all of Holdsworth's Opus will be transcribed and will become the bible of guitar students, just as Scarlatti and Bach are for the keyboard. As the student progresses, they will undoubtedly come to a point where they will sit back in amazement and say, Holdsworth played this, no way, it's impossible.

You'll not get killed... I feel the same way. I love Allan's music, but never quite liked is obsession with chorus. Although, he used multiple delays, if I'm not mistaken, instead of a traditional chorus unit.
@sega62s
@sega62s 5 лет назад
David Araújo chorus is to get a stereo effect, like a double guitar....simple
@javiceres
@javiceres 5 лет назад
andy T Well, not always. And yes through the years he ended up using modulated multitap delays with individual taps panned and off set modulation on each of them to achieve an extreme stereo chorus effect

um, dorian add flat 6? dorian has a natural 6. aeolian has the flat six. no way you can have a chord or scale with both ringing at the same time. sure, as a passing tone, the flat six. but dorian doesn't have a flat six to 'add' the notation shows a clear natural 6, as F# in A dorian is the natural 6, not the flat which would be F natural. . sorry. splendid work, otherwise, keep it up! hope you are well, this is an old video!
@JohnDoe-gk7ok
@JohnDoe-gk7ok 4 года назад
Thanks, but my guess is that many of the chords are products of double tracking (or you just transcribed them incorrectly). It is not physically possible for human fingers to play some of those voices.
@michaelgaboardi9817
@michaelgaboardi9817 4 года назад
Haha I guess you’re not too familiar with Holdsworth! Check out some live videos of this tune and watch his fingers when comping with any ensemble. He really does play most of his voicings exactly like those in this transcription. And they are not impossible by any means you just have to be gifted with massive hands

Michael Gaboardi If you look at his solos, none of his single note intervals are that wide. You would think that someone who could stretch like that would incorporate that into his solos, hmmmm
