nice job explaining it. i liked the way you compared the UI to the yaml file. I'm new at this so this is helpful

Thanks! Some of my older projects, like my LED stair lights, were completed before the UI automation editor was available and I found that many folks that tried to build the project often struggled with the YAML integration parts, as they were newer and didn't have a lot of YAML experience. So, I wanted to try to help them out (and others) to show how you could take someone else's YAML automation and easily recreate it using the automation editor. Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I appreciate it!

You're more than welcome! I know this video will have a pretty narrow audience, but a lot of folks have reached out and had problems integrating my stair lighting YAML automations into their Home Assistant, so I thought I'd throw this together for anyone that has seen a YAML automation and wanted to duplicate it in their own instance. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment!

thanks god for Domoticz, much more user friendly interface and usage. But HA is more versatile, more used.

Well, the type of LEDs I use depend on the project and my intended use. But for most projects, I use 5V WS2812b LED strips. I have a whole playlist of LED projects, including some beginner information on how to work with LED strips, building your first controller and more that might be helpful if you are just starting out: ru-vid.com/group/PLqjDNeOVHOkf079FYwRLRoOHJwLijKkP3 Let me know if you have any follow up questions.

Thank you for this. If you have any automations with "if" or "Choose" in them I would love to know now they work.

You are welcome! I have hundreds of automations, so I might have one somewhere, but in a nutshell, "Choose" works pretty much like IF THEN ELSE in programming. Under the 'Actions', you would specify -choose: and then one or more conditions. The first condition that returns TRUE will have the actions (sequence:) listed under that executed. You can specify a -default: as well, which is like the ELSE... run these actions if none of the other conditions are true. I'm sure the UI works in much the same way. Select an action type of "choose" then specify the various conditions (If's) and the actions to run if that condition is true and an optional default actions to run if none of the conditions are true. Hope that helps a little. To be honest, I never use the Automation Editor, as I learned to do my automations in YAML "way back when" and I just tend to stick with what I know and am comfortable with. But don't hesitate to reach back out if I can help any in other way.

I am following the video. so far so good. But I am assuming I missed a step being how I don't have any of the things there to popup and I am entering entites and stuff like that. like light.stairs etc. Did I miss a step or should I have already had something installed before I got this far? Thank you.

You should have integrated your WLED (light) controller and the ESPHome devices (motion) into Home Assistant first. If you are on a recent version of Home Assistant, these should appear automatically via notification as "New devices found". You simply go to integrations and configure them. If they don't show automatically, you can manually add them through either the WLED or ESPHome integrations. Of course, your names may be different, but if successfully integrated, you can go to Developer Tools -> States and search light.xxxxx and see if your device shows (or binary_sensor.xxxxx for motion). Once those appear, they should show up as selections in the Automation Editor. Let me know if you need additional info.
