Please, please, PLEASE make a video on how to use industrial design in home without it looking like a coffee shop. I love the rustic vibe of wood, leather and metal but I feel I'll end up with a coffee shop living room lol
The trick is to not go for one style. Mix it up, have fun. Don’t buy all your stuff from one store (as he mentioned in the video). Think “industrial look with versatility”
I would say to add to what the others have said above, introduce some imperfections. A true industrial warehouse would have chipped paint and dented objects. A few imperfect things will go a long way to adding authenticity.
I'd love this as well, too, because that's what I'm going for. I think money has hampered me though from going too cliche with the look, lol. My apartment layout is as far from industrial as it gets. I have light tan walls that I cannot paint and wallpaper on matte paint will rip it, so I can't use that to create a different background color. My issue is being careful I don't lean too much into gray and black. My couch and ottoman are a dark gray with wood trim and black legs (the Ethan couch/sectional and ottoman from Castlry) and my curtains are plain light gray (I might be changing them to something patterned. I got them at $10 a panel from an putlet store). The TV stand is a wide black one I got from Overstock that can fit a 90" TV, but I only have a 55, so I just put a few candles and my diffuser on it. And I found this pully-system/movie reel kind of lamp from Overstock as well, but it too is black (actually, it's supposed to be a very dark bronze, but if it looks black...it's black 😅). I've not decorated the back of the couch yet, but I have settled on doing a twist of the cliche black and white city photos with instead doing some colorful futuristic cityscapes from an artist I found on Displate. I figured the metal posters would be interesting and as he uses a lot of neon colors, it would draw the eye towards them and break up the monotony. If I get the money, I'd also like to change out the boob light ceiling fan, but the woodgrain on it pairs okay with the woodgrain on the couch, so I'm not in a rush to take it down. In short, I agree with everyone else that mixing up other decor styles helps. My (temporary) accent pillows came from Big Lots because that's what I can afford right now and my throw blanket is an orange crocheted piece I got from Target. Both look more modern than industrial, but I like that design style, too.
I think a big tip here is to bring in real seasonal things from nature - actual flowers, greenery, pumpkins, pinecones, pine boughs, etc. Death to tacky plastic decor!
I used to work for crate and barrel, obviously very much under the same parent company as cb2, and I have to say, best reltail/service job I had. I literally had to quit because I didn't want to do customer service long term and I kept getting raises - which meant that if I stayed much longer I wouldn't be able to afford to leave. How many retail employees can say that's their issue? Loved crate, cried the day I left, best company I have worked for so far. 💖
Thank you for including Canadian accessibility! Not all Canadian creators bother to do so. I loved learning all the new stores I should look at for buying furniture for my space!
SAME! Lol I took this as a “don’t bother going to these retailers, you’ll hate everything” video. Lololol I need more embellishment and richness to the colours and designs. I’m often left with cheaper items just cuz it’s so hard to find items that aren’t antiques or too on theme.
Nick, I feel I must inform you on the use of veneer. I noticed in several videos, you seem to paint wood veneer in a negative light. The reality is that veneer dies not automatically cheapen the quality of wood products. 1) Certain designs are impossible or ill-advised with solid wood and veneer is better suited 2) veneer can make products more stable as they are much less prone to wood movement, and 3) some veneers are quite expensive. Veneer does not mean low quality!
I've been doing a lot more shopping at antique stores lately. My home design is traditional, but with comfortable fabrics and lighter, beachy colors to make sure nothing is too precious. I can find a lot of items that feel "authentic" to our traditional style at an antique store, and because the items are reused, I'm not worried about something being broken (3 kids live here too). Win win!
he didn't spend anytime with those of us that like more traditional furniture. I too shop a lot at antique stores for many items and I love the style. I guess if you don't fall into the catagory of modern./contemorary you don't count. I wouldn't buy furniture from any of those stores. Not everyone likes those styles. "Yes, you do you but not for me" Doesn't help those of us that like old things
I’ve either inherited or found at estate sales a lot of pre-WWII furniture. Most of it is oak with a honey or light brown finish. These pieces may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I love how warm and homey it makes my living space.
@@vidcas1711 My house was built in 1930 so I'm keeping with the Great Depression/pre-WWII vibe as much as possible. Nobody else seems to be doing that.
I just wanted to add a comment about the veneer furniture. I used to be very adamant about avoiding veneer after going through all the typical experiences people have with cheap furniture peeling or chipping, but after having 2 pieces of wood furniture custom made by carpenters now and exploring others I have really come around to understand veneer's role in furniture. There's 2 times when veneer is actually what you want. 1.) Weight. Solid wood is sooooooo heavy. You're limited in what you can do due to the weight. For example, table leg style and placement is more limited if your tabletop is extremely heavy. Or you may need to have something like a solid metal frame all the way around to support the table instead of just legs and then the table becomes unable to flat pack and cannot move through some hallways, elevators etc. 2.) Some woods that are really beautiful to look at are not that strong and don't support weight well. So if you had something like a bookshelf you wouldn't want solid wood from a species that is going to sag in the middle after books sit on it for a couple years. Also materials like ply handle bending much better (this is why stuff like the Eames lounge is veneer). I think where the veneer goes wrong is because consumers MOSTLY experience it with very cheap furniture so the underlying structural material is horrible like Ikea with their chippy flakey MDF and cardboard inside.
I just cannot purchase chairs, sofas without sitting in them first. I’m not opposed to buying online but in person does it for me. It’s getting harder and harder to find in person furniture stores.
Agreed! Never, ever buy a major piece of upholstery (sofa, dining chairs, etc.) without sitting in them first. I'm amazed at the number of people who buy these online.
@@Person-mh6xqIt's just because we can't find anything we like in person. I used to like West Elm, but not so much the past couple of years. We JUST got a CB2, and some online retailers are now opening brick-and-mortar shops/showrooms.
I'm glad I've found Nick's channel! I finally own a home and I can't wait to decorate! Nick's videos have helped me come up with ideas. I can't wait to get started! Now I just need money 😂
Nobody asked, but I like Room and Board and Blu Dot, also. Room and Board is heavy on real wood and quality sofas. Blu Dot is adventurous in the modern space with quality pieces. On that fur chair at CB2 that you don’t like, I think it is a great piece for mountain and ski locales, where it would not look funky at all, so niche market there.
Any chance you could do similar videos about retailers for other styles? Or maybe retailers that sell kid/family products that you don’t hate? I know your feelings on kid furniture, but I’d love to see something that isn’t beige or total junk (which seem to be the only options for us breeders lol).
I loved article until they upcharged their shipping rates. I live eight hours from the warehouse (out of I think like six in North America) and they wanted to charge me pretty much double to have a coffee table delivered stating I live “a significant distance” from their warehouse. If they’re trying to market themselves as an online retailer they should be able to ship at a reasonable price to all of North America, not only places within 6 hours of their warehouse. I purchased a coffee table from West Elm instead and it was actually cheaper than if I ordered from Article
Thank you for bringing up the point that people should not shop at only one retailer for furniture. I am constantly telling clients to not buy a furniture suite for their bedrooms or living rooms.
I'm English country traditional (still love your videos though) and am so glad you mentioned Etsy. Great place for pillow covers from Lee Jofa, Colefax & Fowler, Michael S. Smith and other very high-end designers.
I used to mix up CB2 with AllModern (which I think is practically a scam since it's just the Wayfair storefront where they mark up the prices), and I'm so glad CB2 gets your endorsement (and that I've stopped confusing them) because I have so much on my wish list from them. I especially love their take on modern Art Deco.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! We live in a semi-rural area, well away from any decent (quality and style at a fair price) furniture/ decor retailers, so learning about new (to me) options is wonderful! I too am a huge fan of supporting domestic Etsy artisans over chain retailers selling mass-produced imports.
I completely agree on your comments on Etsy. I usually use Google images to see if the seller's image is unique to Etsy. Or if it's from the same brand/seller.
I also adore EQ3. I love the japandi/scandi vibes with bright pops of colour. And I usually find it pretty affordable (they've got a nice little sale section too)
Article seemed to get very big very quickly, and I wouldn't be surprised if all their youtube sponsorships played a big role in that. There was a period (I think in the last 1-2 years?) where it seemed like most RU-vidrs I watched that did a lot of room makeover content were getting free furniture from Article in like every video.
LOVE that you included Etsy in this list! There are so many unique pieces sold here, so you can get a one of a kind piece. [Not a cheat in my eyes.] Also, you're supporting small businesses when you shop Etsy. Yes, I know they have widened that to other vendors, but you can still find a lot of small businesses that are doing wonderful things.
Love all the brands Nick Recommended. I also would add Room& Board: plenty of customizable solid wood options, good for larger home as I find most places don't make very large furnitures, mostly make in USA so we get to support local craftsmanship. Vermont Wood Studio is another place to shop for solid wood pieces. Just don't get a bedroom set from them LOL. I love Bo Concept but it is toooo expensive in the US.
I'm so glad I"m passed the time of Acquiring I have amassed a collection that now has to be curated. the Answer of course is Seasonal Refresh. Rotate out things designated to certain seasons, serving pieces, dishware, table linens, vases, room scents, ... your home can be new again with forgotten things in that cabinet.
Most honest home decor advice! Where else will you hear someone say they like a brand , "they take risks" yet in the same breath let a comment like "they insist on selling" slip off the tongue? Love the honesty and what I've been accused of (gasp!) having no filter😆 🥰
I love that CB2 takes risks. I would buy some of those riskier pieces. I think the fuzzy chair fits perfectly with the design aesthetic of the younger crowd of have made their money in social media. I've seen pieces like that in their home tour videos on RU-vid.
Hey Nick! This video you featured 3 Vancouver retailers, and last one you said "Every place has a Brick"- you should ask your international (non US/Canada) viewers to tell you their countries' Sundays and Bricks and do a video reacting to them. For Mexico, I'd say Dico is our Brick and Gaia Design is Article-like enough that I'd want to hear your thoughts on them
I have many Mexican furniture pieces..all wood..I bought a dining table that was not stained or painted..I rubbed the top with butcher block conditioner which really does protect the wood..I have a headboard thst is wild..painted..flowers cut into the wood..
Time to do a blog about about solid wood construction and the differences between inexpensive furniture built on particleboard or pine then veneered and high end furniture of hardwood construction inlaid with fine choice veneers.
I came to your channel specifically to learn about retailers that Canadians can access. So glad you did this, and I'm hoping you'll do a video on smaller or local retailers in Canada.
Hi Nick, always love your channel. I was so surprised you named Rove Concept as one of your favorite retailers. Recently, I ordered dining chairs n was not satisfied...To return the chairs, the customer must pay for shipping themselves. To my dismay it cost me $800 to return the chairs. (Cost due to weight and distance) 😑
Although totally irrelevant to me as I am from Europe, I like how Sundays lists distance between legs in table specs, not just length itself, because it gives you the info whether or not your chairs will fit between them.
I’ve been looking for a side board for over a year and finally found one when I looked up Sundays. I ordered the Easy Edge side board as it’s exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the suggestions as I’ve never heard of Sundays before.
I was in Chicago last week and sat in that cooky furry chair at CB2. My daughter was so embarrassed I took an interest that she walked away and pretended not to know me. LOL. It was so much fun and very comfortable, but I agree that it's reserved for the most eclectic. The fur reminded me of an Afghan dog.
Yes!!!! I LOVE CB2 home decor. Their price point is VERY competitive and you can FEEL the quality of their items if you go into store. (Which I wish they had more of). But I bought some travertine candle pillars a few months back. You can literally use them as a weapon. The weight of their items is fantastic! There’s nothing worse than seeing an item, picking it up and it weighs nothing. I like having that heavy luxe feel to them.
As someone who loves Scandi, and has spent a long time curating my house into that style, I love your suggestions. I think your content appeals to me because we se to have similar tastes haha.
Oh thanks! I'm looking at their stuff now and I like some of it. Unfortunately, my house needs a more traditional style than the stores Nick talks about here. But Mobila looks like they have options
You had me at japandi.....Scandinavian Japandi.... I have an Article couch and about 75% of my light fixtures from CB2. I've also become a fan of Burrow - who I have for 2 beds and a table in my home. In addition to their incredible focus and business model, the cat Easter eggs laced throughout their website to call out the focus on pet-proof furniture really did it for me. They deserve love.
My favorite is CB2. I also like Article, West Elm and All Modern. Thank you for your videos, I have enjoyed all of them. You have given me some great ideas on redecorating my home.
thank you for including Article, I've seen many retailers like them advertised online and I'm like scared to buy without looking at the furniture in person, but I trust your sense of style and advise so I'll give them a try!!!
I love all the mentioned retailers but also wanted to give a shout out to Urban Barn (not sure if they are Ontario only or national). Their style leans more toward what Pottery Barn offers but they are more affordable and have excellent customer service. I like their wood furniture, sofas, rugs, window coverings and the sales are quite good.
Nick, I love your videos and respect your style. My personal style is traditional (I love old stuff, anything older than but not including mid-century) and I'm wondering if you could do a video on where to find elegant old style decor/furniture? I'm not sure such a place exists outside of antique shops but I thought I'd ask lol.
As someone who loves natural stone, CB2 is best mix of style and price. I purchase a lot of stone furniture and items from them and it's the best mix of style, quality, and price (for stone). You'd need to go up market (RH, for example) to get similar designs, but at 2-5x the price and similar quality.
Floridian here, visiting Toronto for one day only! I just left CB2 and they have a green marble table that I would DIE for! Thanks for this list--I'll check out Sundays online!
I have an Article dining table and chairs and I'm in the Southeast USA. I bought it several years ago when they were much smaller and had their former name.
For me it’s Ethan Allen..and the rest is commentary. Amongst furnishing my space with original pieces from the early 1900’s, I did custom couches with them (one in leather with ottoman) with Mission style end table, coffee table, and simple entertainment center in beautiful shades of rich wood. Fabrics chosen of my choice., with complimenting rugs. That was 2005, and each piece remains timeless and beyond upgrade. You’ve inspired me to bring in more color though, to my primarily white walls, and look forward to sending a pic when I’ve painted one wall “Raspberry Blush’ !!! Till then, Thanks for the Inspiration
I’ve been looking for a side board for over a year and finally found one when I looked up Sundays. I ordered the Easy Edge side board as it’s exactly what I was looking’ve never heard of Sundays before.
I would love to see a video on how to or where to go to design and furnish a dorm room. Maybe you could do a series of videos of designing for kids from nursery to adolescent to teen to university? Or, suggest some designers that have done similar videos?
Loving your videos. Just found you a few days ago and have watched tons. You really have a way with delivering your message which I love. Can relate to so much of what you say. Ontario 😃❤
Listening from Orlando and haven’t heard of a lot of these retailers until your videos. Love your channel! I’m an Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn girl. Enjoy Crate and Barrel for kitchen items, ( I have their dishes) and love Williams Sonoma.
I think in some video of yours, you were saying places are getting more stylish with office furniture (because of covid). Ive been having trouble finding office furniture that is both supportive/useful for work, but also looks good. Im wondering if youd have a video on that, would be so helpful to us remote wfh folks ^_^!
At one time I had 3 houses to furnish..in one house I had a w.r. Dallas table and chsirs..all wood..I had a pigskin table made in Mexico for my house in tucson..and then I bought an acacia table and chairs for the vacation house in the az mountains..all wood..I gave my son the round w.r.dallas table and chairs and bought a Mexican table out of pine..to replace the w.r.dallas..I needed a rectangle table instead of a round one..acacia is kin to mesquite..really good wood..
I've never heard of Article until you mentioned it. Now I'm seriously considering a sofa from them. Also, their prices are very reasonable and they seem to have great reviews.
I have mixed feelings about veneer because solid wood furniture tends to be better quality but scratches easily. In contrast, veneer typically seems much more scratch-resistant, but if it gets damaged, like good luck fixing that.
I agree with CB2 and Article. Purchased from both and very happy. Will look into other suggestions. Thanks for not including West Elm. I purchased a "contract grade" sectional that was made poorly. Seems we're not sewn correctly, foam was cheap, material pilled for $4K. Consider checking out Medley furniture, which I have now. Handtied springs, natural materials, and well made ❤️
Most of my stuff has come from Craigslist, Nextdoor, or other second hand places. I would never buy retail unless I had a ton of money. Chandeliers, beautiful dinning room sets, buffets, bars, bedroom furniture, etc. So many amazing pieces I have that are great quality and super inexpensive.
Thanks for introducing me to some new sources for home decorating. After watching some of your video's yesterday, I was all over Spoken-IO and loved them, so I will definitely check these out! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great video content Nick!
Omg and we bought a bed frame and lights from article 😂 I’m loving this video! Also, for those wondering, I just moved, I don’t normally spend this much on new furniture
I love this video and was excited that some of the options are actually available here in Vancouver. Unfortunately, I've already checked out those retailers and their style does not fit my home. I need something slightly more traditional. Mid-century modern would look so, so very wrong in my new house. I guess I will continue to look, and to continue to live in an empty house ;-)
Yes, Etsy is great. I bought a bed, dresser and night tables from west elm. Mistake. Bit the bullet and got a handmade bed from Etsy. Nick, agree with the commenter that said your furniture looks like West Elm. It's the wooden credenzas. They're a very West Elm-ish color and style. West Elm is OK, but they have a very recognizable look.
I love most of these suggestions and will definitely look into Sundays, but I am surprised by Rove Concepts. I looked into ordering from them, but the countless horror stories ordering from them, the lack of communication after ordering, and the horrible returns situations just made me look to another company. They have nice designs, but I couldn't trust them enough to spend that type of money.
I have a lot of things from Crate & Barrel and CB2, probably because the outlet is close. But my favorite place to go for one of a kind furniture etc. is a consignment store called Dulce in the design district of Dallas. And I agree, Etsy is wonderful. I'm at the point where I have to get rid of something if I want to buy anything, but I'm going to have to take a look at Sundays.
Hello Nick, Congratulations on your new home! I have enjoyed watching many of your videos over the years. I appreciate your efforts in helping people learn their design style and create their space. You have definitely helped me. I have been able to create a space that is unique and home to me. You are very kind a giving of your talents. Best wishes in your new home.
One of my favorite stores for home decor is Jonathan Adler. I have a lot of his pieces. Hello Muse Collection! my favorite piece is the Frida Urn (not the gilded one) it just speaks to my soul (now I sound cheesy) I absolutely love it... Right now, I am eyeing the Dora Maar Long Bowl, and placing it on my dining room table, and the Frida Urn on the table behind my living room couch. Decisions, decisions!
I LOVE Etsy! I've gotten so many gorgeous one-of-a-kind items there. Many of the sellers will do custom work if you request it. I've had them send pictures of the exact pieces of wood they have so I can pick the one I like the best. I've bought several paintings where I choose one I like from their designs, then tell them exactly what I like about it and what I'd like changed -- such as maybe a different color, or something added, and they make it to order. There are so many incredibly talented artists on that site. But yes, you do have to be careful about getting the cheap stuff from China. Sometimes I do a Google search for something I like, and if I find the exact same thing at large retailers, I skip it. But I've purchased stunning original impasto paintings for about the same you'd pay for a mass produced print at the mall.
I would love to hear recommendations for the UK, I realise that this is probably not the place to find that but if anyone could point me in the direction of UK stores or a RU-vid channel based here I'd be greatful! It won't stop me watching Nick or any other of the many brilliant Canadian/US channels- just would be interesting to have ideas on shops from a fellow brit.
