My ex mother-in-law had a crushed velvet sofa. It was mustard colored and hideous, but she loved it 😂 said it was the most comfortable sofa she ever had. So sad for people who have to get rid of stuff they love just because someone says it was so last year.

@Cherish Dials - I agree with you so much on the comfort! I still kind of regret getting rid of the most comfy couch I ever owned, though the frame was never going to be quite right for where I wanted to go, design wise. Looking back, I wish I had custom designed the base and reupholstered it though. I would have made it works somewhere, somehow, if I had known that I just wasn't going to get that perfect fit and comfort again. It had some pretty lines, except for the base, And I didn't want a skirt at the bottom anymore.

@@bitrudder3792 - I feel lucky because in the country in Indiana where I’m from-if you don’t have a plaid couch you’re in the height of sophistication 😂😂😂 and yes. Comfort is more important than style to me. I’m sorry about your couch. That mustard velvet couch truly was hideous though.

@Yeeefaaan - I'm with Sophie on the cleaning part, too! My mom used to tell me that her decor choices stemmed partly from having to a lot of dusting of decorative ornaments at her home growing up - it was definitely NOT part of her life's plan to keep doing that! The older I get the MORE important this is to me.

Very considerate and practical advice. Though I still love my Barcelona coffee table designed by Mies van der Rohe despite its glass top. So I would say that if one does not choose a furniture or decor because it feels trendy, but because one genuinely loves it, you should embrace it.

As a nurse and as someone getting older, I look at glass coffee tables a little more suspiciously, lol! It's easy to trip over what you don't see. But glass tables are awesome for creating that sense of space. Not so great for toddlers who seem to crack their heads on them regularly.😅

@@bitrudder3792 OMG my Mom got a glass top coffee table and a glass table for the kitchen a few years ago, and they were so uncomfortable. I expected my parents house to be the ultimate in comfort, but suddenly I was always terrified that I was going to put my feet up accidentally and smash them through the glass. Or place something heavy down on the kitchen table and shatter it. I missed their big sturdy furniture that used to be there when there were 7 of us living in the house lol
@bitrudder3792
@bitrudder3792 Год назад
@@goodgrief888 - I can totally picture that, we were 7 also! Big round formica kitchen table with a generous turntable made serving a breeze, and only wooden or marble coffee tables (for the living room)! I miss those! The wooden one was a box that held out of season clothing/blankets and rolled on casters. The marble one would be so chic today, lol! But there's nothing like sturdy, purposeful furniture! And its so hard to feel "at home" with glass sometimes, even if it creates a nice look!

Came across your video this morning. Im sure you and your team are wonderful people, but these suggestions are exactly why I have been decluttering and minimizing my house over the last couple years. People, keep what you love but use daily. Don’t get caught up in what’s in style. I’ve spent thousands of dollars trying to keep up with style and it didn’t make me any happier. Nothing wrong with change, just make sure you are changing because YOU have grown tired of it, not because the trend is telling you to do it.

I agree with almost all your insights save the glass table one. I purchased a round glass dining table for my dining room, well made, with low back chairs that actually look exactly like from a 30s movie "My Man Godfrey" in a scene from a snazzy supper club they opened with down and out have-nots as employees. Not intentional on my part but surprising to see. Anyway, the glass does open up the room as the other furniture is different eras of vintage in wood plus you can see the rug. I see another commenter has same thoughts. What really shocks me is how many wealthy pp have really bad design on the interior including gawdy dated kitchens in some absolutely gorgeous period homes that are worth millions. It's bizarre.

That would be fun, if she did a wood mixing video. We have solved that problem with a few clever techniques. We have both orange toned and reddish brown toned wood stained furniture, and some medium cooler brown items. And peachy pinky millennial tile. And blonde wood. I mostly separated the blonde wood from the red brown stuff in different rooms. Walls were painted a dark brown, Sherwin-Williams Jute brown, That has a coral base that makes the orange cabinets and mental sing beautifully together and looks good with the floor. Amazing difference people think we have new cabinets. A leather chair in a cognac color that harmonizes with the orange wood, A ceiling fan with blades of the same color, apparel Woodchest and a vintage sewing box and some water hyacinth chairs in similar orange to cinnamon tones balance out a few pieces in the more traditional reddish brown opium table, fluted pedestal, end table. Walls that are not dark brown or a light pinkish Taupe that goes great with the floor, another throwback color to the early 2000s but it works. The trick was to find a color to tie them all together and the brown with the coral undertone accomplished that. The other trick is to marry Wood with low grain patterns. The busier the wood, the more visual excitement there is. The harder it is to get them to behave together. So our rustic pine furniture, even though a lot of it carries the same orange tone, I don't put it anywhere near this stuff. It's upstairs doing its thing in a more organic and natural way. The low grain blonde furniture in white birch and unstained maple lives at the front of the house, I will be adding a more espresso dark brown wall and white curtains and off-white to that space and it will still relate. A blonde wood accent chair actually is not too bad when I move it temporally into the family room where all this other wood is happening. It relates because it has a cream colored upholstery on the seat, and that goes with the soft white curtains, cream club chairs, white piano, white kitchen counters, etc. Oh, and we got a beige flecked soft white Berber area rug to add more neutrals for the wood tones to play off of. Empty nesting is great, you can have the kind of carpet you want! So minding your woodgrain and stacking on the neutral of your choice to play with your Woodtones is another strategy.

People with a decent budget can afford to pay for weekly plant care & the rest of us can get so much joy out of diy hardy indoor plants & the added health benefits that indoor plants bring. I wish I had bought more than one cream colored hundred percent wool shaggy rug when it was $79 at the big box store. It was the perfect 4 x 6 size for our bathroom to keep it from having this odd array of bathmats scattered around and asymmetrical flooring space. It really elevated the space, felt good underfoot, and the standard hotel style bath mat that we used in front of the tub and shower could be put out of the way/into the laundry When not in immediate use. It lasted a really long time before it finally started to look sad, and then I was sad because I didn't have another one and I couldn't find anyone selling such a thing at such a reasonable price and at just the right size!

Thank you for another great video. Really enjoyed the explanation of the paneling and what it should look like. I think an IKEA video would be very interesting.

THANK YOU for calling out the Jeanneret chairs! I don't care how it looks, an bony, uncomfortable chair should NEVER be a trend. But I still have my glass top coffee table and am thinking of upgrading to a better one. I don't know if I can give up that openness. But I don't have little kids running through, which would change my mind completely on glass. Great video.

This was hilarious, I'm gagging at the velvet chair bum print situation 🤣. Please please do an IKEA video, that would be really fun 😊

I love your videos Sophie, great style and info (and eloquence). Good point about glass on furniture, reminded me of when I was a teen & my parents had a glasstop coffee table. It was a cool 70s design but I cringed every time I plonked a coffee cup onto it.

An interesting video as always. Really liked how you show a bad example versus a good example of how to do moldings on walls.

I agree with some of these. People design based on personal choice,budget, or what is trending.

Your incisive insights are truly praiseworthy. Your infinite knowledge on design itruly reaffirms your position as the Leading Luminary of the Design Arena . As you spoke of wall trims and molding patterns on walls, are they included any more in modern design any longer as they are associated with older architecture.Kindly enlighten on this

First time here. I really thought I was going to hate this video when I read the title, but I think she hot the nail on the head. Her ideas are practical as well as tasteful.

On point with everything. For me, the worst of the lot was a toss up between the faux wall plant and shaggy rug..I disliked both equally. Never saw the interest in them.
