I'm with you Jillian. I don't want a female member either. One of my favorite things about Home Free is that beautiful 5 part male harmony. You're right though, either way it's going to be different. 🤷 Thanks guys! Have fun at the concert - wish I was near Memphis. 🍟
I love HF because of the all male vocal blend. There is a richness to it that will be lost with a female voice. I like the collaborations every so often, but not on a full time basis. Plus, I think it would change how the guys play off each other, and this is part of their charm.
I agree with Jillian. The problem I had with the ladies singing, is there was so many times you just couldn't understand what they were saying/singing. They guys have great pronunciations, easy to understand for those of us with hearing issues.
Love This one with Brooke Eden, and Love Their Cover of To the Moon and Back featuring Maggie Baugh. But I agree with Jillian, Want Home Free to Stay All Guys (HomeFree Guys ❤)
Guys, this was filmed east of Phoenix at Goldfield’s Ghost Town. We go there all the time. Austin is in front of the restaurant and the stairs that Brooke came down are from the bordello. You can go down into the mine or take the train and hear about the Lost Dutchman’s Gold.
I lived less than 5 minutes from Goldfield Ghost Town between Apache Junction and Gold Canyon. I even got to judge a chili cook-off once! The area around the Superstition Mountains is gorgeous!
Never was my favorite song but Home Free makes any song better. And Home Free cowboys?...Yes, please!!! I agree, I wouldn't appreciate a female voice joining our guys though i don't mind collaborations. They sang " Meant to Be" with Lisa Cimorelli that was nice.. Thanks for the Home Free reactions.
I'm with you Jillian, I don't want a women in the group, I want it all guys. Austin's voice in this is so good, and of course Tim's low is always on point
Tanya was 13 when this song came out. Bette Midler recorded it first and also Helen Reddy had a pretty good hit, but it is Tanya's signature song really. It is pronounced Tan-yuh too, not Tawn-yuh. This video also reminds us just how tall the HF guys are, they tower over Brooke. They met Reba and took a picture with her and you don't really think of Reba being a petite woman, but same effect again, 5 giants next to a tiny lady.
Bette Midler recorded it first in 1971. Tanya Tucker recorded it in 1972 when she was 13 yrs old, and this was her signature song. Then Helen Reddy recorded it in 1973. I remember when Tucker came out with Delta Dawn, as the AM radio stations played it to death! I saw HF last night, and they sang this; they didn't need a female voice to hit those notes! Have fun at your meet-up and concert!
As has been pointed out in other posts and interviews, Adam Rupp is the only founding member left. The rest, including Austin, were replacements for those who left. The most important thing is how their voices blend.
Has to stay 5 guys, that's one of the reasons I love them so much. I love this song, twang or not. Enjoy the concert, I've seen them live 3 times, unfortunately they are not coming to Canada this year so I'll have to wait. I saw the first concert they ever did with only 4 members lat time they were here in Winnipeg.
Brooke Eden is a detriment to this song. She constantly wags her head from side to side as if she is disagreeing with everything. She needs vocal coaching.
Five males voices is one of the things that separates HomeFree from Pentatonix, Club for Five, Sound Exchance and other a cappella quintets. There are enough great singers, that I think they will be able to find a terrific male power tenor. I do expect it will be someone from gospel or musical theater rather than country music. It’s going to be hardest to find someone that fits into the HomeFree family, on and off the stage. They’ve been a ‘man band’ for a quarter century. It doesn’t seem likely they’d been able to change that. But if a woman is the best fit, I’ll support. I’m still anxious about a replacement; but optimistic. Enjoy the concert.
Rob said they were looking for a high tenor on the last Avid Indoorsman Q &A. So they are definitely looking for a male singer. I thought somewhere I heard thy were taking video samples from any singers interested. It may end up being someone completely unknown. Thanks for your reaction.
Home Free has done a hand full of songs featuring female singers. Brooke did a fantastic job with this song. My favorite song with a female is TO THE MOON AND BACK featuring Maggie Baugh. This is a cover of a Dolly Parton song. This song has a very special meaning to me. It is a song talking about how much love you have for someone. The day this song came out my month old granddaughter passed away and when I listen to this latter that night and the following days it helped me though the mourning process. I highly recommend it. Great reaction and have a blessed day and a great time in Memphis
The guys of Home Free have another beautiful song with a woman called "From here to the moon and back". I highly recommend it, just make sure you have your tissues handy. The video is a heartstring puller. I love this song and it brings back memories of listening to the original with my mom who is no longer with us. She loved all things country music.
I agree with Jillian, I wouldn't want a woman as the fifth member to Home Free. Please react to The Horses they recorded while they were in Australia. It is a collaboration with two Australian artists one happens to be a woman. It is really beautiful. Have fun at the concert, wish I was going.
I grew up on Tanya Tucker's version. I put theirs on while cooking at my dad's, I didn't tell him or his wife that it was Home Free, until after the first part. To say it shocked them is an understatement, they thought it was Tanya singing. As far as Austin, they can never replace him, they can add someone but not replace any one. I felt the same way when they added Chance, he didn't replace Chris.
Such a great song! Bette Midler did it first in 1971 but I remember Tanya Tucker & Helen Reddy's versions. The guys did a really nice job backing up Brooke Eden on this song. They never take away from a guest vocalist. And how cool did they all look dressed in the western theme. Reminded me of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western movies I used to watch. I enjoy the guys doing collaborations with female artists but I hope they stay a 5 man band.
I agree, Jillian. Let’s not break the guy thing. Brook sounds good with them because she sings in a lower register (alto). This was a good collaboration! I think what you remember hearing was the one from Helen Reddy. It was very popular back in the day (60’s & 70’s). Catch you later on Home FrYday! 🎶 Cyd
incase anyone's interested Home Free has done a few other collaborations with female artists , a couple of my favorites are From Here To The Moon And Bach Ft Maggie Baugh ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xouD5DrluDs.html and Meant To Be Ft Lisa Cimorelli ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yxVQqvOd6_E.html
They have another video with a female colab From Here To The Moon And Back ft Maggie Baugh.Originally sung by Dolly Parton. I agree I don’t want them to have a female I like it with just the guys 😊
She's not the first woman to collaborate with them. I like Tennessee Christmas with Rachel Wammack. They also did Baby It's Cold Outside with Kira Isabella. They need to stay all male with those harmonies.
I’m 1,000% in Jillian’s camp, I do not want a female voice! Which is strange because I was a very high soprano in my younger days. There is something about the mellow sound of all male voices, I think of it as preferring the sound of a cello to a violin. I was not a fan of the original version of this but as usual Home Free did an upgrade and I love the “twang” in this. The boys looking like a band of outlaws didn’t hurt either! Love your reactions and love Home Free! ❤ #HomeFree
😊I will forever have fond memories of this song cause my 5 or 6 year old daughter adopted this as her showering song. She only knew the first line, but would belt it out while she showered. Over, and over and over. And at 54, she still remembers doing that. 😂
This is amazing version of this song. And Brooke voice is absolutely beautiful. If you are interested in another video with a girl try From Here to The Moon and Back. I believe it was filmed in Arizona. I always enjoy watching your reactions to these guys.
That one was with Maggie Baugh who sang Delta Dawn with them on tour. Her voice and her fiddle playing fit right in with Home Free. (I am NOT talking as a permanent member, mind you.)
I really hope they remain an all male band! Female guests are okay but there is just something about that 5-part all male harmony! Every one of the guys is over 6ft. This was originally released by Helen Reddy in 1971 l, before Tanya Tucker. In 1973 it charted at #1 for both artists.
“Delta Dawn” was composed by songwriters Alex Harvey and Larry Collins. The words to the song were reportedly inspired by Harvey’s mother, a woman he described as having “come from the Mississippi Delta and she always lived her life as if she had a suitcase in her hand but nowhere to put it down.”
I love how Austin leans into his 'southern country boy' voice in this one. They don't have many with a woman, but you night watch From Here to the Moon and Back. Maggie Baugh is building a name for herself in country music. Yes, it was Arizona.
This is a Tanya Tucker song. My dad showed me this song when I was growing up. I'm GenX, so when I was a kiddo, it was still 8-tracks in the car. I'm serious. Didn't think I was that old, but I guess I am! Jeremy, you did well with your accent, by the way - you thought you were exaggerating, but I have moved down south now, and I don't think you really were exaggerating. That was spot on. That's the status quo down here.
: ) Home Free does have a few with female artist(s)! Butchyall have done many -- and with many more to go tbh. To me --- there's no other song like it. When it starts or any other part of the song - there's no mistaking which it is. But now -- that's me, I'm country! I ustacould play "Name That Tune" with country, give ya the artist and pretty much the year! up through the 90s anyway. (That was before the last 2 yrs though). Home Free & Brooke done a mighty fine job on it. Be Safe
We love you too. Have fun at the concert! (I know you will) They are all tall. Around 6'2 -6'4". I'm 5'3" so they sure did seem tall to me when I met them.
Completely with you, Jillian. It wouldn't fit them in any way. Not their sound, not their dynamics, not their image. Yes, it will all change anyway, but a tweak is one thing, as was the case when Chris left and Chance joined, and a full-on change in personality is something completely different, and bringing in a female member would change the personality of the band. I trust that they know and feel this to be true, too. I think the big change for Home Free, identity wise, took place when they went country as a suggestion from the Sing Off production team during their auditioning. That was after Austin joined and added another southern accent. I know Tim asked if anyone knows a country power high tenor the day after the announcement went public, so my guys is that that is what they ultimately want.
Saw them Tuesday on the first show of the tour, was awesome. Only when the audience stood we could not see. My wife could not stand so I did not either.
The cadence and harmonies are reminiscent of gospel music. I believe that may be where your sense of familiarity may be coming from' It certainly hits those chords with me, especially with Home Free's harmonies; they really give it a gospel vibe. While they have done other songs with female artists, two others come to mind, From Here to the Moon And Back, with Maggie Baugh and The Horses, with Travis Collins and Amy Sheppard. However I agree with Jillian, they sound great when they have a female artist as a guest, but I don't see them replacing Austin with a soprano or alto, they need a great tenor to step into Austins place.
Tanya Tucker recorded this when she was (13?) is what has been mentioned in some comments. Love your Home Friday's. Have you ever checked how many releases HF has done? During the pandemic they were dropping one close to every other week. Yes, they have done collaborations with other female artists.
Thanks for the great info, Susan!! Nope, we haven't checked HF's official count - don't even know how you'd go about doing that. We'll just happily take anything and everything we can get! ❤️🥷
@musikbyjh Hey J & J! 👋🏼 I can't remember if you've done *Meant To Be* that HF did with Lisa Cimorelli. If not, you definitely should check it out!! It's *not* twangy (or even really "country"), Jeremy!! Haha Great energy and a catchy tune & a really fun BTS video, too!l (separate video - maybe you could do a two-fer?) 😉 It's obvious the guys had great fun at the arcade that day! 😂👍 Chance cracked me up being such a Star Wars nerd. Lol
P.S. I strongly agree with you, Jillian, about a female addition to Home Free...absolutely NOT. It's the rich sound of 5 males that draws many of us to HF to begin with and sets them apart in sound! 👍❤ Occasional collabs are great, but not fulltime.
This is the fourth collaboration with a female artist (that I can think of). But I think it is the first that you have reacted to. I would definitely recommend "From Here to the Moon," which is another female collab. (Can't think of her name atm, sorry.)
They have done a few with women singing. Most notably is To the moon and back, beautiful! The horses had a couple (guy and girl). Agreed, if they pulled in a girl they'd be too much like Pentatonix. The dynamic would be too different.
Jealous you’re seeing them!!🥰Sad Austin is leaving the Group soon! He wants to be home more with his new Bride & possibly start their precious family 🥺
@@musikbyjh he seems like a competitive guy. I'm betting he loves it. Damn, I'd love to make it to Memphis but it's more of a haul than I thought, especially during the week. I've already seen HF twice in the last 7 or 8 months. Have fun!
Personally, I think that Peter Hollens would be a fantastic successor to Austin. Oh, you right Jeremy. There is a lot of "twang" in this song. I have to admit that I am much more familiar with Helen Reddy's rendition of the song than Tanya's.
Maggie Baugh fulfilled her end-of-tour obligation with a little prank on the Home Free guys. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qGCyTRAov9s.html She was support for Road Sweet Road gigs and 2022 Christmas.
And here’s an example of what it’s like fitting in with them backstage. Maggie’s a trooper. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jVW22p8tuAo.html
I totally agree with you. I like their collaborations with female singers (The Horses featuing Travis Collins and Amy Sheppard or From Here To The Moon and Back featuring Maggie Baugh are great) but I couldn't imagine a female singer joining them full time after Austin leaves. I'm sure though they find a great addition to their group.
Have an absolute blast at the show and M&G! Wish I was at both. Hope you meet some fun n Fries. Not sure if because rihyt after Easter and/or Tuesday but looks like a small(ish) crowd so far. There was also a very popular version by Helen Reddy that may be more familiar to you.
Thanks so much!! We think (hope) many will show up that haven't "responded" to our Facebook event page. Either way, meeting just one Fey would make our day!! ❤️🥷
I had to laugh when you were talking about the height difference. I met them backstage unexpectedly at one of their concerts and because they are all about the same height, you don't realize until you're standing there that all of them are around or over 6 feet tall. So she is the height of most of us and they are just TALL!
Yeah I don’t want a female member either. It’s strange but I love the men’s voices and just don’t think a woman would work. About 3 people did this in the 70’s before this. Tanya is the one I know and like. She’s super twangy. 😃
It's really not so much twang, but, voices with grit. I agree with Jillian, all men, a women to Collab with, but not all the time. Great reaction. I look forward all week for HF Fridays. Another thought before i forget, while Austin is doing a Clint Eastwood look, Tim is looking like a Wyatt Earp theme from a movie. Tim makes a good U.S. Marshall. Another great upgrade is "When will i Be Loved", it has alot of history behind it.
I'm totally with Jillian on this one. A woman would totally throw things off. I've always hated this song - just chorus after chorus after chorus. At least Home Free made each one unique. Still hate it. BUT... when I have heard it in a reaction, they have made me sing along. Irritates me to no end. Ha!
Tim, Austin, Chance and Adam are 6'2" tall and Rob is 6'3" tall. I asked HF in a Patreon chat because the Folsom Prison Blues video had a background height chart and Adam was 5'9", Chance was 5'1", Rob and Austin were 6'7", and Tim was 6'6". So I asked. Now we all know. They are tall dudes!
I think they should find the best voice to add to the group. It doesn't necessarily have to be a guy. I would need to hear how it sounds. That's the important thing for me. I think it would be interesting if an older individual, who already has children was to join them.
The original (?) was released Sept 11, 1972, just a few days before I turned 11 years old. (I am now 62 years old.) This has been, is and always be a Tanya Tucker song. (pronounced TAN-ya, like BAN -ya. Not Tonya. It’s very country Jeremy. 😆) While I have somewhat enjoyed the collabs with female artists, they are definitely not my favorite. Home Free since its inception has been all male, unless I missed something. They will not be home free if they chose a female. We all know that Austin cannot be replaced. Honestly, I have listened to very little home free since the announcement of Austin’s impending departure. I have listened to very little music period, except when to a local country station while in my car. Am I “salty”? (I think that’s the new term) Yep. I know they have to do what is best for them both as a group and individually, as we all do. It’s part of growing and a part of life in general. I have dropped other groups because they have made significant changes. Am I a terrible human being? Maybe, but that’s me. I don’t like change, I am a creature of habit. I don’t think I had been following them long enough when Chris left for it to have impacted me to such a degree. I discovered them and their music on RU-vid in February 2016. And Jeremy…..(this is from a Momma who has a 41 year old, red headed son named Jeremy ….. for Jillian’s sake, stop with the barnacle stuff! 😂)
Love Home Free’s version of this song. Brook has a great voice, but was Austin singing higher at the end? 😂. I think I read that this was filmed in AZ, near Tucson.
It's not near Tuscon but Apache Junction, AZ I live just a little down the road under those gorgeous Superstition Mountains. That's what you see in the background!
Song was written in 1971 by a couple of country song writers. First was a hit by Tanya Tucker then Bette Midler and then...Helen Reddy took it to #1. According to Mr Google. LOL. So...yikes....the song is 53 years old.
Bette Midler, Tanya Tucker & Helen Reddy all had hits with this song in the 1970's. I love Home Free's rendition of it - Brooke Eden has a marvelous voice and blends so well with them. Thanks for playing this & your comments. There's a live version of them singing this with Maggie Baugh (that's got more bass & even higher notes)!
It was originally sung by Helen Reddy then by Tanya Tucker and now Home Free. As for a female singer replacing Austin it could work. Pentatonix did great with a female singer.
