First reaction and honest thoughts to an innovative Sea Shanty Medley by Home Free! The music in this arrangement covers a wide variety of sea shanty songs that have been sung for generations. You may even remember a few from the Nickelodeon show Spongebob Squarepants.

Listening to Adam Rupp's castenets but loved the whole think

I thought that this song did significantly feature Adam Rupp's beatboxing - it is so smooth and sounds so much like real drums that it kind of 'hides' in the music, but if you listen to specifically hear the drum and castanet sounds, it really is very good!

I think it’s a tie between Adam’s castanets and the level of extra that Austin is through the whole thing. 😂

Great reaction! Yes that is Tim....if you noticed Tim didn't move too much...he's actually standing in a boat in his brother-in-law's back yard! Austin..well he really brought out his theatrical background for this one! Their producer Darrin did an awesome job combining it all together!

Yes, that was Tim Foust dressed as Capt Jack Sparrow....these are all old & real songs they mashed up into this medley. Home Free are always using attention to details...that's what makes their videos so watchable & enjoyable....that high quality ! And those harmonies are always on point. And yes this was recorded during the pandemic period. that was one of their most artisticly creative times. Check out more of their music since late 2019....Jeffrey can I make a special request ? That you might react to their cover of Dire Straits 1985 hit, "Brothers in arms" it's amazing, and will really show you the depth of their artistry & their talent...they aren't just some country bumpkins but truly professional singers & artists.

They where all wearing sea costumes, Tim as Jack Sparrow, Austin and Adam was also pirates. Rob had the perfect captain stash ever, and Chance was a modern sailor. They allways are in perfect tunes with both lead, lyrics, harmonies and off course Adam's percussion, have lo love those castanets.

How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.

This was one of the 'quarantine' videos. They all had the equipment in their homes and it was (obviously) expertly put together. The other ones in this series include "Quarantine", "Sunday Best", "Down to the Honkytonk", "Moonshine" and my favourite "Meet In the Middle". Fall down the Home Free rabbit hole - it's a fun trip..

You mentioned how the aspect ratio must have been from them filming on their phones during lockdown. Yes, it was done during lockdown, but it was also done at a time when posting sea shanties on Tik Tok was briefly a thing and it's my understanding that's why they did all this in this particular way. It was a nod to that.

You should check out their version of the infamous "Rick Roll - Never Gonna Give You Up" that they released last April fools day. The video is edited to look like it was made back in the 80s when Rick Astley first recorded the song and there are alot of funny nods to the original Astley video in it too. Think you would probably enjoy that.😊 Great review...thank you!

I think you'll love Home Free's April 1st trio, if you haven't seen them already. In any order watch Bohemian Rhapsody, My Heart Will Go On (notice their costumes), and Don't Stop Believin'. There is a fourth song that follows but you'll have already figured that one out. ;-D Love your reactions. Thank you for your insight.

Since you have an appreciation for video work, you should look at Home Free's version of "Meet in the Middle". The song is amazing as usual. It is another that they did during lockdown but the video editing... I have done some video work in the past and it is truly fascinating to me what they did with that one.

I just found your channel today so I’m late to the party. I really enjoyed your insight into the video production. Others have explained their play on TikTok which is clever. I just wanted to point out that though they filmed with their phones, they created the audio separately. When they had to cancel their tour at the start of the pandemic they came up with a way to keep recording music and making videos. They all got good microphones and special computer software that allowed their producer to work with them one by one to record their tracks. Chance recorded in his closet, Austin had a makeshift sound studio in his house (Tim recorded at least some of his audio at Austin’s…they’re both in Nashville) and Rob was able to record at their producer’s studio (in Minnesota). Adam has always recorded the beatboxing at his home. As for the video they all shot their own footage with the help of wives and significant others (and they have a serious new appreciation for their camera crews). Once they had the concept their videographer/editor would work with each one on the footage he wanted. Everyone would send their videos to him and then he would create the finished result. This whole process enabled Home Free to keep themselves and their creative team employed during the lockdowns.

Love this. At first I was like sea shanty? What? I didn’t know sea shanties were a thing on TikTok but Chance knew (he’s the first singer and brought this idea up to the boys). I only knew one song but loved this arrangement. Yep, Tim (Capt. Jack Sparrow) and Austin (in red) and Adam (beatboxer)went full pirate mode but you’re right they filmed this at home during Covid so the others not so much. Did you hear Adam doing castanets in the last song? Amazing! They were super active during Covid and put out a lot of songs. Quarantine is another favorite. Try Brothers in Arms…it’s amazing and was just released a few weeks ago. Good reaction Jeff.

Tim staying so still to keep from falling out of the boat he's standing in--it makes me laugh because every time I see him in this I think of the animated pirates in Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean. 😆 And those castanets!! Adam Rupp's percussion and sound effects are second to none!! 🥰

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by Peter Hollens feat. Home Free was filmed in a similar way only in a much larger scale I guess you could say. I Swear is another one done apart and meshed together later. But the best one (in my uneducated opinion) to check out is Quarantine. Please don't miss out on such a treasure.

Where did you hear they started as a barbershop quartet? I've never heard that. Chris and Adam started the group in college and Adam started to learn beatboxing for the group and I've never heard of a barbershop quartet with a beatboxer. They used to do a skit in their shows about singing doing some barbershop quartet songs to appeal to audiences while they were finding their sound but it was a funny skit.

If you want the undying loyalty of the Home Fries, learn the names of the members of the group. "The guy in the pirate outfit" could have been Tim Foust (Bass, the guy you seemed to be indicating), Austin Brown (High tenor, the guy in red with the sword), or Adam Rupp (Vocal percussionist) - they were all wearing versions of pirate costumes. OK, so you did mention Tim at the end - but still, knowing who the guys are is critical to showing your sincere interest in the group. One last detail: sea shanties, as they were originally, were NEVER about, or for, pirates. In the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean," one of the only things that was actually accurate was Gibbs' telling Miss Swann that singing songs about pirates was considered bad luck. The last song, "Santianna," is a modern shanty about pirates - but traditional shanties were about whaling, naval life, shore life, and the loneliness of a sailor's life - but NOT pirates. Real sailors did not admire pirates, or find anything cute or cool to sing about them. They were more concerned about the murder, rape, and wanton destruction of property and lives that followed pirates everywhere they went. Just as today, the Somali pirates do not get admiration or tunes about them, so it was in the days of tall ships. But I am glad that you enjoyed this medley, superbly performed by the group (as is all of their work). I would love to hear longer versions of all of these, and more. How about an album of shanties and sea songs? Not all sea songs were shanties...
