This is my guide and technique for making Olympic concrete barbell weights. I cover steps in here about pouring the concrete and extracting the plates. Specs and details of how to construct the forms are included in the ebook in the link below.
EBOOK: payhip.com/b/E7df
Also visit the website to see more:
Concretegainz.com
The concrete used is Quickrete premixed concrete. It already contains pre-measured amounts of gravel, sand and Portland cement and fiber glass. This is what I recommend to use. I also have used steel rebar in some of the earlier sets and have concluded that steel remesh is just as good but a lot cheaper.
I've made over a 100 sets of these weights and have not had any of my personal plates or plates I've sold break. This is with normal care and controlled lifts onto a suitable exercise surface, (i.e. dense foam exercise mats or outside ground etc). Dropping or slamming these plates onto a rock hard surface will most likely result in a break or crack but normal controlled use of these plates will result in them working just fine and getting a great workout!

I had been wondering about doing this and was hoping someone commented about it as I haven't seen anything. Doesn't the concrete need to cure for a while? I know after 72 hours it should be ready to use, but doesn't it continue to cure for a month or so -at this volume? Looks like a gallon of liquid rubber should be. more than enough. How many coats did you use, 4-5?

@@concretegainz368 great video, i independently arrived at most of the same techniques as you. fyi a few tips: 1) since youre doing this on large scale, you may want to look into pond / immersion curing for your plates. keep your plates soaked in water for a few days, it should increase strength significantly. you can use a kiddie pool or a large basin to submerge the concrete in water for some days. 2) you can replace the steel reinforcement with chicken wire. make sure it has at least 1" holes, so that aggregate is allowed to pass freely through the holes. 3) if you want to be fancy, you can use metal pipe instead of pvc. the sound of the metal pipe as the weight is loaded onto a barbell sounds exactly like a real plate.

Awesome to hear that man, yeah you could totally add some kind of finish seal to the plates, that would be cool, however if youre working out in the grass outside I recommend no seal or paint because it tends to attract grass and dirt more easily than the plain concrete. Let me know what you find works best

ConcreteGainz yo dude I bought your ebook and made two 45lb weights so far. I was able to get them at 44.8 and 44.5 lbs which I thought was ridiculously accurate. Good job and thanks for figuring all that out. I’m going to try coating one with flex seal and another with linex and I’ll let you know how that goes

ConcreteGainz oh, and also this could be helpful for making your forms. Since glueing down the flashing is pretty tricky, I used a superglue with an accelerator (basically instant glue) called miterapel to glue it down before I sealed the edges with silicone and it worked really well

Very cool business idea. You should make more tutorial videos. Not even with your concrete weights. Also your wooden rack and so on. By doing this, you could promote your products. I think thats perfect. ;)

They are actually more resilient than you think. I've been using them for months with no problems at all. Just lift on a dense foam mat or outside ground.

@Milan D I actually think what he’s doing is a great idea and a good way to make weights affordable. Also if you are making a home gym you most likely aren’t doing max deadlifts and squats but rather full workouts. No reason to try and max

@Milan D well I'm watching this cause I've made my own gym with concrete plates. No problems, I deadlift in 250 to 300 ponds area, though my plates are a bit thicker, I made them that way so they are tougher I don't care about measurements that much. Of course you better not throw them like some people do with metal plates, but it's so much cheaper

I you lift on a some kind of mat you should be fine. The wire structure inside should prevent them from splitting so the worst thing that could happen is that you get about 8 pounds inbalance on your way up.

Probably exactly 45 pounds once you paint it & put any rubber type material around it such as flex seal. I might have to do this..
