Great episode! I would actually love if you could do a whole episode for first time homeowners on all the things they are going to need to know about maintaining their houses (e.g. changing smoke alarm batteries, maintaining the HVAC, mold checks or whatever else people are supposed to be doing-- clearly I haven't idea! 😁) Would be cool to do one for first time car owners also. Like what maintenance to do on the car and what safety/emergency stuff to put in your car emergency kit.

I am a huge advocate for being organized. How does this save money? You ask... Here’s what happened in my life that proves this to be true: I needed an extension cord for some home project I was doing. I was only moderately organized at that point in my life. And I found out I was not organized enough. I looked and looked for an extension cord until it just was not practical to spend any more time/energy looking. I needed to make a trip to the hardware store for something else so I figured I would just pick up an extension cord then. Which is what I did. I finished the project for which I used the new extension cord and all was well. Until about a month later. About a month later, I decided to do a little more organizing and one area I decided to work on was “household supplies-hardware.” This included gathering together electrical stuff such as-you guessed it-all unused extension cords. Was I ever in for a surprise. After scouring my apartment I found a total of 12 unused extension cords! Now, I am a single woman who lives alone in a one bedroom apartment. What in the world did I need 12 extension cords for?! I ended up giving them away... thus, throwing away money on things I didn’t need. Luckily, I had an aha moment and realized that I was in the habit of just buying things I needed for a current project even though I already had what I needed-BUT I WAS SO DISORGANIZED I JUST COULD NOT FIND WHAT I NEEDED TO USE THEN! Consequently, I was purchasing the same things over and over again. What a waste. I had another aha moment. I saw that if I organized things so that they were easily accessible to me whenever I needed them, I would use what I have and not keep making wasteful, redundant purchases. I spent time creating a kind of filing system for stuff and THIS WORKS! The time I invest in organization saves me money and ultimately saves me time, too. When I tell friends about the benefits of my organization habits, they are invariably resistant to doing the initial work that is needed to be done in order to set things up. They invariably think being organized takes too much time. I think they are just looking for excuses not to do it because none of them are too stupid to understand that the initial work they invest pays off with interest.

I love the segment with the married couple. Makes me feel normal that it took him awhile to get onboard because my husband was the same.

We sold our house to get out of debt...was the best decision financially.

Rachel, could you do an episode geared toward younger couples/singles where their friends are moving but you are still renting???maybe tips on land lord safe updates?

That's really good that selling the house worked for that couple but in the bigger cities where I've always lived it's more expensive to rent and with that amount of debt you can't even buy a house.

Once I get out of BS3 before I start BS4 I am taking a couple months off to replace some much needed home items!! Can not wait!!

Hello we are debt free working on baby step 3, our yearly income is 38,000 after tax. We have 2 mortgages 1. 31,000 house worth 45,000 House needs about 25,000 upgrades in the next 5 years. We have had it on the market for 1 year we already went down to 30.000 and it doesn’t sell. 2. 111,000 house worth 125,000 needs 10,000 upgrades in the next 5 years we love both houses. Should we put our 125,000 on the market too and see if we can sell one??

My husband and I have been wondering if we should sell our house too because of the equity. I can't find anyone that doesn't think we're crazy tho! We even put it on the market but at a bad time- right before holidays. I don't know if we should do it or not! How do we make this decision? I wish someone could just tell me what to do.

Kinda dumb, they spent all their equity on the house paying off debt and now they are paying rent on apartment!!! Not to mention they probably had to pay taxes on the payment since it didn't go towards another house!!!
