Vacuum Chambers are very versatile and useful. Unfortunately they're also expensive. But making one at home is surprisingly easy. This simple build is just a matter of making sure everything is air tight.
Here I make my own vacuum chamber from scrap materials and plumbing parts, with very simple construction methods. Then it's time to try out the vacuum chamber with the classic marshmallow trial. Great fun.

Now you can check the gas level in your aluminium castings, just have a small (about 1/2 a cup) steel mould in the chamber fill the cup with molten aluminium immediately apply vacuum down to 0.1 atmosphere. Later slit the casting and clean up with abrasive paper to see how much gas you have - try different degassing methods and see what you get. Love the marshmallows are they nice and chewy afterwards?... Martin.

VegOilGuy using a electric Furness greatly reduces the amount of gas Ingres into the melt doesn't it? @olifoumdryman. Isn't the main cause of hydrogen from the waste gasses from the fuel combustion? The reason to use electric is it's much "cleaner"
@vogman
@vogman 6 лет назад
You're quite right. I'm not the guru of course (Martin is), but I know Martin has mentioned to me previously that it's during the melting process that a lot of gases are introduced. As electric foundries are fairly sealed and don't rely on extra oxygen to achieve temperature, there should be less gases involved : )

Sweet! Should also work quite nicely in model building setups to remove air from resin before it's poured into latex molds.

One belated alternative: while not perfect, a fast-and-dirty alternative to silicone rubber is foam mounting tape, sometimes sold as "camper mounting tape" or "foam rubber tape". It provides a surprisingly good vacuum seal for a low cost -- the biggest downside is that it only does so under compression. Not generally a problem for vacuum chambers, but can be tedious in other applications.

I’ve just started watching trough your vids and don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet but if you don’t want to risk heat damage to electric vac pump find a refrigerant pump from a used window AC unit or refrigerator. (Window unit is normally better style). With a little searching its not hard to find one someone is throwing out. I use one to degas silicone and resin before casting, these pumps will draw close to -30 in Hg (normally -25 to -27)

Try - vacuum distillation. Boiling points of water and ethanol drop as pressure drops. Ethanol will always boil lower than water. If the pressure drops enough, you can distill ethanol at close to room temperature.

Nice job showing how simple it can be. Making a VC has been on my to-do list for too long and this gives me inspiration. Just a ? or 2 * why did you use a plank lined with foil to form the silicon seal instead of simply using the plexiglass top? * why did you put the vacuum gauge in the plexiglass lid rather than on a "T" just upstream of the close off valve? These ?? are not criticisms, just curious. And then a tip (which you probably know about but someone else might not. * Silicone tubes are notorious for hardening up once they have been used once. To stop it happening, take a small piece of aluminium foil and smooth it over the end of the opening before screwing the cap down over it. (You need to screw the foil well into the threads). Since I learned of this I have never had a tube dry up on me and I have some that I've been using in dribs and drabs for more than 5 years * when finished using it, leave the waste silicone in the screw on nozzle. Leave it to thoroughly set and pull it out with long nosed pliers. Trim off the small end. Makes a beaut ear plug. * keep the old nozzles and cut them off at different lengths so you have a set with different opening sizes.

Good vaccuum chamber. Here' another way, make your box a little bigger, place a car tyre pump at the bottom, drill a hole and put the inflation hose out through it, then seal the hole. Extend the on/off switch and the +/- wires of the pump to the outside of the case , again seal it now connect the other side of the switch to a small 12v battery ( or car battery). Switch on. the pump will evacuate the box through the hose... Ta, Dah!

I say 5 stars for using wood. That took some balls. This is the only one I have seen made of plywood. It makes sense to me. Use wood for the structure and a sheeting and silicone to hold the air.
@vogman
@vogman 6 лет назад
That's Jeff. Plywood's fine. It's strong and stable. This was an eight inch square chamber. If I wanted to make it bigger, I'd probably thicken up the plywood from 18mm (3/4 inch), but I'd still be happy in it's strength : )

How can we seal a vapor-impermeable bag/envelope around an object so that we can take the object out of the vacuum chamber and the vacuum seal remains? Ideally the bag would be transparent but aluminum foil could be okay.

Very nice build, welcome to the world of vacuum pressure. I hope in 2 years or so I'll be able to pick up and get stuff like this going again. until then I'm glad to have stuff like this to watch. I'll have to get a rebuild kit for my Welch Vacuum Pumps, I've got a DuoSeal pump to rebuild for a project that should be able to get below 0.001 Torr (that thing was quite the pocketbook breaker when I got it and it was discounted and in unknown shape... Started one copying yours. BUT my caulk is not curing (didn't know it had an expiration date! Dang.) While it wasn't curing, I thought of a possible improvement in your method. Why not put the four sides together, then put the foil-wrapped upside down and set the four sides on top of it. That way you can reach all the joints of the top (inside and outside) to make sure the caulk is perfect. (I couldn't see what was going on in with the top and bottom both on.) After the caulk is cured then put the bottom on and test it. Just a thought.

Size doesn't matter really mate, just remember to scale up the strength as well. I got away with 18mm plywood as my box was quite small. Vacuum chambers are surprisingly powerful, so thicken and strengthen as you enlarge. As long as things are air tight, you'll be fine : )

I like the idea of using ply for the chamber, does it hold a constant vacuum over a few hours or over night? Putting the valve on the bottom could be a pump killer if you have a bubble over or your box gets bumped, I've seen people have a second smaller chamber between the pump and the pot for those kind of mishaps. Thanks for sharing
@vogman
@vogman 6 лет назад
Thanks Johnny... some good points there. I'll be honest, mine loses vacuum over about 20 seconds or so without pumping, but I blame this on the plumbing not the plywood. There's no sign of the paint cracking or peeling on the ply, which I think would occur if it were porous. My plumbing parts were all re-used from other projects and not really bought for purpose, so I think that's the source of my fault, but the concept stands I think : )
@cowboy124aa3
@cowboy124aa3 5 лет назад
I would actually blame it in the plywood, you can't get 100% sealing from unsealed wood and eventually the wood will lose its integrity over a period of time. Clear PVC plastic thick sheets and silicone joints would be ideal. That way you can see if leaks develop. You could seal the wood using the silicone sealed joints like you did with the top but eventually the wood will lose its layered integrity over time. And also check your plumbing!
@martinwhite3005

@@vogman I just made one using the video. I have the same issue (about 15sec), and was wondering how air tight the plywood is. You know that those copper fittings you are using are pre soldered? You can tell by that ring around them. Clean, flux, assemble and heat. You should still see the solder flow when it's hot enough.
@vogman
@vogman 6 лет назад
Hi Brandon. Yes, we call them solder-ring fittings. You're right - that's the principle. However, when you tin the pipe, you get a solder to solder bond. I genuinely have a 100% success rate with this method and shared it because I've known a lot of people who struggle with plumbing.
@brandonfrancey5592
@brandonfrancey5592 6 лет назад
Well what ever works for you that is fine, just as someone that does actual plumbing, it pains me sometimes to watch RU-vidrs burn copper to a crisp and melt a pound of solder and call that plumbing. Now were you using a lead free solder or one containing lead? For this project it doesn't matter what you are using but a lead based solder will melt and flow at a lower temperature which is easier to use.

It can be even more simple if you replace the whole wooden box with a large thick walled pot and have your evacuation point share the hole your gauge does. @vogman 5 лет назад
No, I didn't scrape it off. It was still wet, so it was wet on wet silicone which bonded well : )
@OGAM_Visuals
@OGAM_Visuals 5 лет назад
Right. I'm in a similar moment now, but the silicone is fully cured, and I somehow managed to leave an un-jellied part on the tinfoil which stuck to the silicone quite well and won't go. Scraping it will be hell, so I was thinking maybe to roughen up the surface with a piece of grinding paper and maybe treat it harshly with a chisel. Do you think new silicone will stick to a cured surface?
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
Silicone is renowned for sticking to everything, including itself. A rough surface helps it grab, but it needs to be clean of dirt, dust and grease. Wipe it down well with white spirit and you're be fine : )

@lukearts2954

actually, that would be very usefull in lost foam casting!!! All gasses from the foam will be sucked out instantly through the sand, and they would even suck the metal into the mold. It should get you wonderful edges... The only question is: how to get the molten metal into the chamber... cfr my other comment: if you add a cluster of tubes to increase the volume of your chamber, it would amply compensate for the volume of the exhausted gasses... (you'll just need a sort of foam that is very strong and that would not expand in the vacuum chamber. I guess a very porous foam (like the green stuff they use for flower arrangement) or grainy foam like PIR?)

I get why you chose wood to build it from. It's cheap and easy to work with. But from a vacuum standpoint i couldn't find worse material for a vacuum chamber. But if it floats your boat, keep sailing. :)
@vogman
@vogman 6 лет назад
It's all about budgets and results. If you want top results and have a healthy budget, then buy one! However, those of us restricted by budget but want 99% of the benefit, we have two choices... do without or build our own. Tomorrow I'll be releasing a video where I've re-used this exact same vacuum chamber and pump in a casting experiment. The results are incredible and are achieved on an extremely low budget using parts that many of us have lying around. That's why I make stuff... that's why I share it : )

I'm just a bit damaged from work. I'm a service technician for one of the larger vacuum brands. And i come in contact with systems that are affected by outgassing from a fingerprint. As i said, i know why you made yours the way you did, and that it works just fine for your purpose. It's just that im used to high vacuum equipment, that wood isn't even on my mind when it comes to vacuum. :)
@vogman
@vogman 6 лет назад
You're absolutely right. The porous nature of timber makes it impractical for truly high performance situations, but for the needs of the average guy, to assist in a few odd jobs, it works surprisingly well : ) Thanks for your input.

Just one small comment - the reason you're not supposed to use your finger to flux is partially the oil from your skin, but that isn't much an issue with something this big, but also partially because it's really not good for you

Hi Vinith.... no, I'm afraid not. It's purely an amateur build from scrap materials. It works very well, but I've no doubt a professional machine works better. However, there's a massive price difference between this home built chamber and a store bought one : )

VegOilguy. Nice video. Question. I’m looking to buy a vacuum chamber for degassing resin. But now thinking of going the DIY route after watching this. Looking to making one the exact size. Wondering if it would suffice for degassing resin? Thanks
@vogman
@vogman 5 лет назад
Hi Gabriel. The chamber is as good as you can make it. Mine has a very tiny leak... so small you can't here it, but over a minute or so it gradually loses vacuum if you don't keep pumping. I know with silicone moulds this isn't good enough. Just that tiniest of tiny drops was enough to spoil the process. So the choice is yours my friend. If absolutely perfect is called for, buy one. If 99.9% is okay, or if you're very confident in plumbing and carpentry, build one : ) But you'd probably need a purpose built pump though. I haven't used resins, but if they're like silicone, you'd struggle to do it with a manual pump.

Hi Hiren. Great question. If I'm honest there's a tiny leak somewhere in my plumbing that I haven't located yet, so if pumping isn't continued, it will lose vacuum over about 20 seconds or so. I keep meaning to strip everything down and re-do it with plenty of PTFE tape... but I still haven't got around to it : )
