Thanks mate for the vid. Used to plastic water gerries in the back of the patrol (60lts). The went to the Collie and had a stainless 70lt water tank put in, 7 years now, no issues at all.

KISS again , love it. My set up : I have a set of DRIFTA Draws with a 55litre water poly tank built in. It is gravity feed and works a treat. Use it this weekend at mates property , where we’re giving him a chop out, having plenty of water on tap was fantastic. Keep up the good work Tim. Love the content and effort you go to, thank you.

Thanks for sharing this, I have one of those little white taps that you showed and its constantly turning itself or gets knocked and breaks off so this will be perfect to change it over to.

In my hilux tray and canopy, I ended up mounting an under tray water tank. Roughly 45 litres, gravity feed tap is at the end of the chassis rail. One of the best mods I have done that’s for sure Cheers Marty

Hey, Tim. I like the ready-to-flow siphon you have created. I have Drifta draws in the back of my Fortuner which have the concealed 35 litre water tank fitted. It is just gravity fed. It works well and is out of the road (but not portable like yours) and there are no problems with vibrations wearing through the plastic or damaging the outlet.

Hi Tim, in the back of my GU I have a sixty litre stainless steel tank which sits behind the rear seats I hooked it up to a 12v water pump handy for filling up the water bottles, showers but the kids really love it as I can fill up their water balloons when where camping so we can have water Ballon fights..😀

Good stuff Tim mate. Yes I’ve been using a 30ltr tub in the back, gravity fed from a join at the bottom. Has worked well for many years now. I have a hook on my barn door for the hose to sit on and I use it as a regular tap. Works a treat. I also carry cask water, usually a couple 10ltrs, which adds as drinking water. Hooroo.

A good idea that suits your needs perfectly Tim. I had the same annoyance for years with lugging jerrycans in and out (and also those silly little taps at the bottom that break off) so came up with a similar but different method that suits any shape jerrycan with a large screw top. Blanked off the bottom hole, purchased a caravan sink pump for $10 at a camping show, used a hole saw to cut the correct sized hole in the centre of the large cap and screwed up the plastic hex nut on the underside. Went to Bunnings and got 600mm of the appropriate sized clear plastic food grade tube and forced it onto the bottom of the pump and screwed the lid back on. The tube reaches right to the bottom and now I can pump out water as needed and get almost all that is in the jerrycan before having to pull it out and refill. So far the plastic tube has stayed on for around 2 years with no clamp.True I don't have a hose with tap like you but I find this works extremely well and may be of interest to those who watch this video.

I just take a 20 ltr square container and decant from the top when needed which is a pain at times so I have been thinking of how to change it. I like your idea and was thinking of something similar the other week and you have just answered my thoughts on how to attach the hose without being swivelled around when tightening the lid of the container. That's very clever 👍 I don't like 12V pumps. In a less complicated setup, I use tap underside the can, I hang the can and let the water flow with gravity. Cheers mate

I have the same system but I added a bike valve to the lid of the breather cap... That way I can pressurise the water flow with a bike pump... . Works a treat...

This is why I love RU-vid. You get great unthought idea without snooping through other people's gear. Lol ok I have 2x30L square water containers from bunnings, and will now use this syphon method and I'll have the overflow/breather running out from under the canopy with a tap (mud, water crossings) then I can bury them at the back. Also putting a fuel float sensor so I can see the water level.

Hitherto I have used the bottom feeding tap as you highlighted, I have a secure storage wrack setup so theres little chance the tap could ever break off in transit and If it did the bulk of the water would be captured in the secure wrack. I also carry a second jerry without a tap. Your way is a great way to go. On a side not, lately I've been cooking up Kippers on the camp grill whilst up the river. If you like healthy smoked fish for brekkie, few buttered slices on the side you can't go wrong. In Woolies fish freezer next to most fish counters. From Scotland these ones are but they are cheap and lovely alternative to eggs and bacon.

Simple and effective and avoiding another power gadget. Let gravity do the work. You also support AU by buying AU Made products. I like to keep things simple just like you, I hate complicated setups which defeat the purpose of going bush and staying away from this complicated life we live in. Well done mate. Btw, I just use two 10L containers with water tap at bottom. I will though try out your method once we get out of this extended lockdown😞😞

I have similar setup. I'd take a step further and filter the water. Depending on what you're using the water for of course. People use garden hose for their water source and wonder why is taste terrible. Nice setup Tim.

Been using that system for over 20 years and agree with you its the best way. On desert trips I carry up to 120L of water in jerrys, and use two of the hoses - one for the best drinking water and the other with bore water or whatever I pick up along the way - so I can separate the good water from not so good. For the breather in the cap, just drill a 1mm hole - small enough to let air in but not big enough to leak. And I like the blue coloured Willow jerrys - have the same large cap as yours but the jerry is transparent enough to see how much water is left. Helps heaps when you refill the jerrys inside the car. And a trigger pistol works best for me - can work it single handed. And instead of hose clamps I find cable ties are a smooth clamp if using the barbed irrigation fittings. A jagged cut on the tip of the hose inside the jerry also stops it sucking against the wall of the container. Cheers

I had the tap through the bottom bung set up. Luckily for me I filled the water jerry the night before and left it in the garage to pack up the next morning. Lo and behold , next morning walked into 20L of water in the garage. P.S. I'd taped the hell out of plumbing tape on the tap thread and it still leaked. I like the hose from the top idea much better. In my camping trailer I have it hooked up to a 12v water pump and tap but I just use the jerry without any fitting in the 4wd, but I think I might change to this setup for that now.

i have a 40l water bladder under my false floor with a similar hose setup. Pros: no water sloshing sound, weight is right down low. Cons: hard to fill in a creek, slight taste (getting better though). on big trips i have been taking a 25l jerry for drinking water and using the bladder for washing etc

G'day Batesy, I have a similar setup but am using the bung at the bottom of the jerry. I'm always worried about it knocking and leaking out the contents so will give this a go, safer option.

Great tips, Tim. I’ve just invested in a Lifesaver jerrycan. Brilliant inbuilt filter. You can get an optional hand pump shower extension. Not cheap. I had to sell a kidney for it. But at least the high quality filter will protect the remaining kidney. Essential to have a good filter if you’re planning any long trips or serious off-roading where water quality may be dodgy. A lot of people will say $500 is a total waste of money for secure drinking water but not bat an eye @ $400 per year to run personalised plates. What price health? ⛑

I grabbed a couple of these cans from BCF, bloody good. Also every time he says "Food Grade" drink, i'm smashed 🍻🍺

I got a water bladder on the roof rack and a Jerry on the rear wheel carrier. Bladder has a hose running to the back carrier similar to your hose setup. Some people put a low profile caravan tank on top with a hose running of it,the problem with having water on top is heat and weight,for me the bladder is used to fill up the caravan instead of carrying water jerry's.

Awesome concept am doing that for sure. Saves installing a water tank and jerry cans fit perfectly in the ute canopy. Also I don't like the idea of having all of my water in one tank when I'm in remote areas. Jerry cans are good for water storage redundancy - if one leaks or cracks on a rough trsil or whatever, then i still have 2 as backup. Also, what's the importance of the hose bend in the Jerry can being in line with the one coming out of the elbow ? Cheers mate

Running an 80L tank underneath the tray with 12v pump. Tray floor is removable for easy acess to second battery and tank for servicing

Great idea..It would have been nice to actually see the fittings though. Went to Pirtec and just bought the one fitting. Elbow with a hose connector on each end. Yet to see if it has a issue.

Can we get a supplies list? I just need the brass fittings please? I saw someone commented what was needed, but Tim also mentions two washers and drilling 16mm hole… cheers

I use a 40 Ltr BOAB Water container in a roof rack mount with a hose and tap to access the water and refill the tank.

You obviously also have the tap above the level of the Jerry when travelling so that if it does get a knock or isn't closed properly you don't lose your water? Good thing about this setup is it is about as light as it can be and gravity always works.

Hi Mate, my back doesn't like lifting those 20lt Jerry cans so I have scaled down to 10lt cans, downside more room needed but so me easyer for the wife to handle, just kidding, my nose arrangements not as good but it works and you can easily put a 10lt on you roof rack for a shower done that a few times up north always warm water in the Jerry can, loved the show, cheers, Neil.

60 litre bladder behind front seats, works ok so far but I might change it to poly tank because hose fitting type fillers arnt going to be easy to fill when no taps around, the poly has a large opening for filling from bucket etc. 😀

Your going to get some comments about filling up with the garden hose.....LOL. That is what I do but use a B.E.S.T filter. Had no problems with taste or quality, so far....(...and run the hose to clear the stale water in the hose...)

I also have something similar but use plastic fittings. I would much prefer brass fittings but I am curious as to how u prevent water leaking from where the brass fitting goes through the plastic lid? What sort of seals do u use to allow both the internal hole and external hose move together and for it not to leak out where the brass fitting goes through the lid??

This is the best Jerry can hack that I have seen so far. I have gone and tried to replicate this but I can’t get a tight enough seal around the elbow fitting to make it water tight. Any tips?

Hey Tim. Thanks for sharing this, I’m planning to give it a go. What size hose do you use? 13mm?

60ltr collapsable tank behind passenger seat in foot well. Seat does not need to be moved forward and can still recline. Weight is low (stable) and conforms to shape of area it is situated and therefore doesn’t become a missile upon sudden breaking. Easy fill via outlet hose that has conventional small brass garden tap with lever (important so you can stop fill quickly at unit and not overfill). Braided hose (tough and doesn’t kink or deform even when door repeatedly closed on it. Brass pressure relief valve on top of unit to avoid explosion and death when filling. You hear it open before bag is full. Then you simply reduce flow until maximum capacity. No drip, no lift filling! Has two very strong stable lifting handles if you want to use bag externally. Upside? Side step (assuming you have one) is a good platform for water transfer to pots etc. This set up keeps weight low, (water is heavy), is secure and out of the way and uses the space its placed in to maximum effect. Things can be placed on top during travel. It’s tough! No valves need be opened when using as bag simply collapses whilst emptying. Downside? It’s low, so you ain’t showering under it. It uses a space where a passengers feet could be (although small children in child seats can happily rest feet upon bag) I’m experimenting with a 200mm x 2m saddled PVC pipe on roof rack for showering. That equates to about 60lts. Painted black of course. That on the right side of roof rack/ tyre on left to balance weight. A 3m braided hose and a detachable quality watering gun with shower mode. A small plastic pallet to stand on that can be easily stored on roof rack. Keep it safe.

Love the idea mate, but the brass fitting on the top can leech lead into the water, so its not food grade or safe for consumption. Best to swap that out for a stainless still fitting instead

I’m having trouble finding the elbow you used from this one do you have a name or part number from pirtek?

I use dual skinned food grade 80 litre water bladders. And packs of 1.5 litre drinking water from Woolies. You can fill up lots of otherwise useless voids with bottles

I'm using a pure hose at the moment. I open the cap, put the hose in and suck it. Yours is much better. Where did you get the 90 degree connector? How do you make sure the hose doesn't turn when the cap turns.

Also for the threaded end, you mentioned there was a brass washer and nut, was this from Pirtek also, so did you get the elbow and others parts all together from Pirtek? thanks again!

I just changed to a 20ltr Jerry and had the hose coming out the bottom. I really.dont like it and keep thinking it will leak all the way through the rig. Might have to try that set up.

We don't get those types of water cans here in California, but good info anyways.

Put a pressure valve in the cap (or anywhere on top), pump it up with your onboard air compressor (must have for 4x4) and you've got pressure for showers. Gravity fed showers aren't very good.

I would recommend using a caravan water filter when filling up. This is what I do when I'm filling mine up, keeps the inside as clean as possible and you have yourself a filtered water. But this is a good mod to do on a jerry can. 👍🏽
