Just wanted to thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. You have given this old chap a renewed interest in working in my basement shop. I have built many things over the years and have enjoyed many hours just having fun and saving a dollar. Please keep up the great vids and put away the negative comments that some people give you and carry on your work and keen shop wisdom it is well appreciated here. Take care old chap and may God bless.
The difference between your homemade weed-snatcher and the one in the store is that all of those from the store end up at the landfill; yours will outlive us all!
"I'm not clever enough to work to plans" Not wanting to pick holes, but I think there's a good case to argue that you're too clever to use plans :-) I used to hate it in school when they made us spend weeks and weeks "designing" something on paper and wouldn't let us go and get our hands dirty. Making something from what you have lying around is a far greater life skill than anything we were taught in the classroom
Wow, I have looked at a few weeding tools online and on RU-vid and this one by far, at least so far anyway, looks like the ticket. And like someone else mentioned, it will outlast us all, it's built like a tank and I like that. Great video old chap!
I recently saw a design similar to this where angle iron cut to a sharp point was used instead of tubing. This one's a bit more sophisticated though as it has a moving jaw and weed ejector. I like it.
You may not be good with plans( I think you are this is great) but you are pretty good with ideas. I hope mine comes out as good.Thank you . When you live on a fixed income (husband and I are retired) you spend more carefully sometimes you have to use common sense instead of dollars and cents.
It seems to work better than the 3-prong Fiskar. That tube improves the extraction. I have some quackgrass to deal with and though a coring tool with push plunger would work well. I'll probably just use a pipe and dowel. Thanks for being ingenious! :D
I like that. I don't have a welder, but I think I can make it by bolting the knife to the flat steel with a Z bend at the ends. For the ejector, just put a 90 degree bend on the end and peen it flat. May try this?
If you put the weeds back upside down It kills the weed & fill the hole back in. I've done this for many years & I've never ever had a weed grow back with my own made weeding tool. My own home made tool is about 4 feet long tube 1"1/2 dia & T shaped handle with a plunger in the middle of handle which pops up when you insert it into the ground by pushing it down & twisting at the same time, So all you do is push the plunger back down to push the weed out. For the ground end I've used a 4" long round pipe 2"dia with teeht cut in the bottom end & it works a treat way way better then 3-prong Fiskarny & other type shop bought ones.
I am going to copy your idea with a combination of the grand pa weeder, they are cast construction, i have bent one of the tines pulling small saplings out....good video, i like your vision with your videos its similar to mine and im 38. I am a big skip diver and love making stuff out of found material, but it has to be professional and worth doing otherwise its a waste of time!
a suggestion for once you have removed the weeds from your lawn: look round your garden for tufts of grass that have self seeded into unhelpful places. We've got a gravel drive, and there's always bits of grass coming up. pull the grass up and use it to stuff the holes in the lawn, 2 birds with 1 stone
Hello Sir, I have recently moved to Tuscany and am plagued with weeds due to the climate. I was considering a Fiskar but they have such a bad review. Your product could be made as a hobby and sold at the many village street markets we have here. Would you mind if I tried to make one and if successful and economic try and make a $. :) Ian.
These are all generated from a design that is very old, here is the modern day example of the same design, its obvious that this where F iskars have got there idea from with a little improvement ......look up grand pa weeder this should take you to various links, u tube will not allow me to post the real web address here....in fact I have one of these I think I paid £12 or so for it a few years ago after seeing a US advert, internet search it and getting one over here
Fiskers is made of strong plastic while the video weeder is made of weak steel and oak. Your are a genius for the choice you made. The Fiskers will be used by your great great great great great grand children. As we all know plastic does not disintegrate with the passage of time and sunlight. (sarcasm) Well done Olchap.
