Looking back on the years I spent buying and trying different pieces of recording equipment, I can easily identify the pieces that were integral in helping me record better sounding music at home. I literally get messages every week from aspiring musicians/producers/songwriters looking to start creating better music at home. This is a "brief" overview of the equipment essentials I think every home studio needs. Within each category, I will breakdown some of my favorite specific pieces and also touch on the equipment that I use. All equipment links are listed below.

Honestly, the "use what you have thing" is some of the best advice I've heard on youtube. A lot of other videos dive straight into different budget options, but for starting out, the soundcard you have might be fine. I did that and now I know where I need to invest and where the stuff I have is fine.

Beginnere here. I use a MPM-1000 condencer mid plug'd into a focusrite studio 2i2, and from there I record into FL studio. And my instrument I use is a fender telecaster (I've had for years) plug'd in via the focusrite, from there I go throught Bias FX into FL studio, and drums I use Toontrack's Ezdrummer 2. This all cost me $650 (not the guitar). I bought the interface on a demodeal, but I've seen there is tons of interface's and mic's going on second hand websites

I'm and 11 year old, and I have grown up in a family full of music. But most of it is indian classical. I now want to explore it myself and I have multiple tunes in my head but i just need to make it tangible. My dream is to become a simple, at-home producer who makes tunes and sells them to singers/artists, movies perhaps, etc. But for now I downloaded GarageBand (the best starting DAW) I tried it and after watching a few tutorials I now know what buttons do what and how to create basic music. I would def recommed it and you will love it. I know a few adult music artisits, that still use GarageBand after over 5-7 years of music production. I recently got a new keyboard, Mac, monitor and desk and I can't wait to start mking music. However, I needed someone to slowly and thouroughly tell me what to do and everything and you did a great job, im gonna give a sub and gona tell my friends too. GREAT JOB MR.BREEN.

Patrick Dont Listen to the Haters Cause the world we know has enough of them. Ive been recording since 2002 and your advice was spot on for a beginner. I too started out with a baby bottle that was made in Latvia (original baby bottles) lol, geez feels like a life time ago. Anyways Keep up the good work and my only comment would be is treatment. Treatment it key so if you cant afford to correct your room use at least ARC system from IK Media and some acoustic panels and base traps. I personally have a treated room and still use trinnov on top of it to really get finite adjustments that are true. Thats my only suggestion and for those that wonder I started on ARC prior to affording trinnov.
@PatrickBreenMusic
@PatrickBreenMusic 6 лет назад
Sonya- Thanks for the kind words! This video was posted literally right before I began turning this writing studio into an actual room suitable for mixing. So yes, I have invested in acoustic treatment. You are right, it is so key. I was previously working out of other recording studios and never needed to really treat my room. For writing and demoing songs, this was a suitable space. I've got a 2.0 version of this video in the works that will definitely include the importance of acoustic treatment. This was merely meant to be an equipment guide for beginners. Thanks for your support and sharing your knowledge!

I am building my studio at the moment and I am a beginner. I was using Reaper for a long time and it is really good! But you need your own instruments and plugins Caustic is another really cheap and impressive daw, but very basic. Recommended as a Garageband alternative and there is a mobile version. Right now I'm using Renoise and I think that's good if you have a programming mind, since it feels like working with a spreadsheet and using hexadecimal to command FX

I feel, know that headphones are by far better than studio monitors. For the bead room setup. No noise to annoy others. Good headphones should give you a flat sound, no bells and whistles, just the straight sound. I use KRK KNS-8400 for most of my listening and find them to be honest and true to the audio you, me produce.

If you want to buy vsts but don't have the money for some of the high quality ones I can definitely recommend Splice. Splice has a pay to own service for a lot of really good plugins. So for example instead of dropping 300 dollars at once you pay around 15 dollars a month untill you payed the full 300 dollars. This is super handy for people like me that don't have 300 dollars at hand at any time and want to make use of high quality vsts. You can stop paying anytime and resume paying anytime and if you already payed 150 and want to just finish paying it at once you can do that as well. Splice also offers a montly payment for credits. For around I think 5 dollars you get like 300 credits. With these credits you can buy pretty high quality samples that the community uploads. A sample costs usualy 1 credit, so it definitely is worth your money. Even if you don't have splice and don't have money for vsts there are definitely a lot of cheap or free vsts out there like Synth1. For drumkits I can recommend checking out reddit. There are some subreddits where people drop pretty good drumkits for free. My favorite is the all the drumkits from TheLunch77.

Is the audio interface necessary if u have a midi keyboard ( m audio oxygen 61 ) and a laptop...
@PatrickBreenMusic
@PatrickBreenMusic 6 лет назад
Ehhh technically no. If you just want to make instrumentals that are all sample-based and/or programmed with MIDI -AND you plan to mix with headphones, then you don't NEED an audio interface. If you're just having fun, have at it! As you progress though and you want to start recording external audio (like instruments & vocals) you will need an audio interface. Also, when you invest in proper monitors, those will connect via your interface.

think of it as a way to boost or cut different aspects of a voice or instrument. You can cut away the mud and improve the clarity and etc, depending on the frequencies you do them on. It’s nothing to be scared of

Go with the analog eq simulations as those will force you to listen to the sound. The fancy graphic eqs tend to distract us with the visuals. You can use them later for precision cuts.

ABOUT STUDIO, HOME STUDIO MONITORS: In my opinion you have to buy brands that make their own loudspeakers, not assembly (80% of the brands) It's a hassle when you have to change a loudspeaker, it's manufactured under specifications and you wait a month to have it. I gave and went to JBL which for the memory, few people know (lack of huge professional culture) is the inventor designer of the studio monitor. I also really like the French brand FOCAL JM LAB, which manufactures its loudspeakers like JBL.

Great video. I use FL Studio and Cubase. Monitors from Mackie, a dynamic high SPL microphone, Steinberg audio interface, laptop, pc, and I have the AKG 240 MK II headphones (and many more) and a lot other equipment to work with. The AKG is really a great headphone for mixing. Because it is semi open, right & left channel output influence each other a little bit, which gives you the feeling of working with monitors. The AKG K240 MK II is more expensive than the standard K240 but if you do some research on the internet you can find these awesome sounding babies for a cheap and affordable price. I highly recommend these headphones for people who want to produce music. Best, Emiel.

Thanks for actually writing down the list with all the Amazon links for every piece of gear. It drives me nuts when videos don’t do that and makes it so much more time consuming. Subscribed 👍🏼

GREAT Video, man. Thank you for CONDENSING (See what I did, there? ;) a very gigantic realm into something of high value, and easy to jump off into the various "branches of"... a LOT more easily than most of the vids I've spent considerable hours sifting through. Appreciate the effort and the passion. Keep it up and Thank You.

DUDE! THANK YOU! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! You deserve SO many more subs... You're doing what we ACTUALLY need! I've always seen these interfaces but I've always been confused about them. And Wikipedia... Well... Makes you MORE confused. Ugh! Thanks though! Now I can finally invest on stuff when I finally but the new computer that I've been waiting for so long (My old one died on me).

Thank you for making this video as I am just starting out. I have spent a ton of hours at guitar center and on line researching. My conclusions thus far have been confirmed because I also felt the same way about many of the choices you shared. 💯👍🏻😎 That feels pretty good because I have really no idea what I’m doing but have a good grasp of what I want to do. Thanks again. 👊

I have a question regarding some products. I was checking out on amazon and most of them gave me a Prop 65 warning which means that some of the products may release chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Is this normal for these types of products or should I keep looking? Btw thank you for the video it was rlly helpful! 😁
