Former New Yorker here. Nice to see an appreciation IMOP, of one of the Jewels of NYC, the Subway. Sad to see the trouble it's in now.

@@coolboss999: Also, to be fair, the next stop soouth-149 St-Grand Concourse, also a major transfer station-is an express stop.
@coolboss999
@coolboss999 6 месяцев назад
@@sparkswolverine Realistically, the 4 train doesn't run express during peak hours cause it skips a LOT of reg stations. Running from Burnside to 149 is the issue. Had the IRT made at least 161 and a few others express stops, the 4 would be able to run the express peak hours.

The IND station was built way after Yankee Stadium opened so that underground station should have been an express station.

The street area is not totally safe 24/7, BUT during the daylight hours AND game day, there are throngs of people in the area so there is no need to look over your shoulder. Even when some baseball games end after midnight, the streets are safe.

Your videos are terrific. They’re filled with informative details and cool video shots. As a kid in the 60s I remember sliding down the escalator hand rail that went down into the IND section from the IRT station from up above. If memory serves me correctly, it was a really long escalator ride.

Yeah, the elevator at this station is pretty long. Reminds me of the Broadway Junction escalator.

Being from the Bronx, this was one of THE best if you wanted to see different cars up or down. Down: From the time I was born until 1984, the B used R40s and some R27s, while the D used R32s and R40M/R42s. Up: Until 1983, the 4 used a mixture of R17, R21, R29 & R33 cars 1984-1988: B & D train used R42s and 3 trains of R32s Up: from 1983-2003: The 4 used R33s and R62 Since 1988: D has been using the R68s, while the B uses R68As Since 2004: the 4 uses R142/142As I referenced the B but before 1995, the C ran on the Concourse

I grew up in the Highbridge section of The Bronx. This was my station of choice growing up and taking the Bx6, Bx13, Bx55 to go JHS 145. Taking either the (4) or (D) to Fordham Rd to go Roosevelt HS. The area is not bad I lived there for 30 plus years. There is still some peices of the 9th Ave El there. The Jermone/Anderson Ave station is on top of the repair shop building. The Sedwick Ave is block by the I-87 off ramp to go to the Market/Mall area.

There were more remnants of the polo grounds elevated section, pre new Yankee stadium location the old el went a few more feet west , the rails all rusted and ties were visible from the downtown platform and along river avenue. The new stadium is on the north side of e 161 st, it’s original 1923-2008 location. That was cut back somewhat for the new stadium. Originally a park between e162 st and e161st. It was a scene in the opening of the odd couple tv show. There are write ups and pictures about the ninth avenue elevated.

@tombarzey7964 6 месяцев назад
Transit history fact note: The sixth avenue el which ran along with the ninth avenue el after 58th street (Manhattan) did operate to Burnside Avenue ( along the Jerome Avenue line) after 1934 until it closed in 1938.

I always show off.the artwork on the IND platforms whenever I have someone attending a Yankee game with me. Especially the tiled "seats" on the south ound platform. But on game day, bring a lot of patience, as people tend to stand by the stairways once they come onto the IND platforms.

Some Ideas for new stations considering in the series: 33rd Street (6) Artwork and very unique with its proposal for express platforms, and eagles with 33 mosaics South Ferry (R,W,1) Because of it being new and history Van Cortlandt Park (1) Because it’s in a park Wall Street (4,5) Because of its rich history and artwork Brooklyn Bridge (4,5,6,J,Z) Because of its abandoned station 59th Street (4,5,6,N,R,W) Because of express platforms being added 111th Street and Mets-Willets Pt (7) Because The elevated track and Citi Field Aqueduct Racetrack: the only one way station Park Place (S) Because of only exclusive shuttle stop Ditmas Avenue: The Culver Shuttle Canarsie Rockaway Parkway: The Canarsie Line opening Queensboro Plaza: IRT-IND Transfer

I get why the IRT (4) line wasn't built as an express station as it opened before the original Yankee Stadium was built. However, the IND should have made 161st-River Ave an express station with island platforms because the Concourse Line opened more than a decade after Yankee Stadium was opened. Another thing I wonder about with the Concourse line is why they only built 1 express track. The rest of the IND system, except the (G) Crosstown Line which is mostly 2 tracks, were built with 2 express tracks. The Bronx could have definitely used full time, two way express service.
@TheRailLeaguer

When the Yankees are at home during the MLB regular season, this station gets really crowded pretty quickly. I hope Mets-Willets Point gets a spotlight in this series very soon because of it’s close proximity to Citi Field and the US Open.
