UPDATED version of the basic home studio video I put out many years ago, giving you all of the new gear upgrades I have in my current studio, and how I use it all!
This is my personal home recording studio; everything you see if what I'm currently using for my albums and other music projects.
For the most part, it's a simple studio setup in a small 10x11 bedroom. And hopefully this encourages you in how easy it can be to have a home studio and record your music.
I mentioned a few things in video and wanted to share those links:

How to Use BIAS Amp 2 with BIAS FX:

Keep it Metal,
Jason

Nice setup for beginner mixers. I use FL Studio as as a daw because I bought it long ago. I used to club in NY and Chicago. Metal is my thing though. I use Amplitube 4 free version. I paid for the orange amps and mesa boogie amps as well. I got a few pedals that work well. Such as the tube screamer. Using a compressor then an equalizer in that chain for every guitar track including acoustics. Helps tremendously! EzDrummer 2 is great. You can change some things, but a drummer is better. Like Jason says. Don't think that ez drummer can't deliver the sound you need. Shoorie school on you tube can help you master Ezdrummer2 to the point you can use it for your album if you can't find a great drummer. I use a 3rd generation scarlet focusrire 2i2 for my audio interface . It allows 48v of power if your Mic type needs it. Another thing not mentioned is headsets. The monitor is a great tool, but you need a good set of phones to hear the pices as they'll sound in the mix.

Not many people know this but… def Leppard pyromania album was done with the drum machine and when they got the new drummer, they said we wanted to sound like this and he nailed it. He sound just like the drum machine, but that album was done with the drum machine and it’s in one of my opinions it’s not metal but great record back in 80s

Hi Jason! First of all, let me tell you I'm a big fan of your videos! They're very educational and I'm learning a lot from it. Keep up the good work! Now, my question is, are you ever gonna make a video of how practically record metal on a home studio? I mean creating a new project, add some audio channels, add some Bias, and actually record some Metal! :) That way we can hear how the guitar sounds in the recording. It doesn't have to be a long video though, just recording of some guitar riffs, and maybe a solo on it. I hope I made my self clear and you get the idea I'm talking about :) So...Keep it METAL!

Great video Jason. If I may make a few suggestions. Your a pretty tall chap, I'd definitely recommend raising your monitors to ear level. Secondly room setup. It seems you've set your desk quite near the right side wall corner. Always try to to place the desk at the center of said wall. Thirdly, room treatment bass traps in the corners and if you can panels on the sidewalls to catch the first points of reflection. Huge fan keep up the great work bigyin\m/
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 5 лет назад
Thanks dude. Yes, I've actually considered getting monitor stands (and a smaller studio desk!) I've also got some things in the room can act as bass traps but getting some panels is in the near future.

They are expensive but the noise is not injected into your raw guitar recording. It's very expensive but powerful.

My set up is as follows: I have a Toshiba Tecra 1TB laptop that has 2 6TB Toshiba external hard drives connected to it. My desk is nothing fancy. It's a HomCom 48" multi level computer desk that was only $165 and suits me fine. My interface is a Roland Studio- Capture. Abit over the top, but considering I do plan on recording vocals, and drums in the future, I thought it would be worth going ahead and getting it. It is really nice, however it is abit pricey so if you don't really plan on recording more than vocals and guitar/bass, then the studio duo I believe is a good choice. I don't use Monitors. I would like to get some Yamaha HS8 pair, but for now I mostly record through my Roland RH-300 headphones. I really can't recommend them enough! They let me hear everything so clearly, even when I make mistakes. I don't have any vocal equipment yet. I'm just uncertain on what to get. Lastly, I use Pro Tools. I am very happy with it. It is quite easy to use and it's worth the money depending on which version you get. I'm not rich, nor am I poor. I would say i stick somewhere in the middle, but most of my stuff I have either got on credit, or just had patience to save up until I could get it. I would go over guitars, but I have so many, but I'll just say the main guitar I use to write my own music with is a ESP E-II Eclipse DB Red Sparkle Left Handed that has EMG 55/67 I believe with a ESP um double padded? leather strap (you can get it on their website), and is set up in A standard (ADGCEA not ADGCFA like a 7 string) with Cleartone Monster Heavy 14-80. Thanks for reading, and I apologize for the story! Just a big fan of Jason and though I would share my set up :D.

This will help me and other tremendously, so thank you again! And I totally realized I forgot to talk about headphones after the fact!! Those make a huge difference, especially recording vocals...they're a MUST because you don't want the sound from monitors bleeding into your vocal tracks! As far as desks...my is too big man! I plan to get rid of it soon, get a smaller desk (simplify things), and get some pro monitor stands soon. I'll check out the HomCom you talked about.

Jason we talked befor, I respect that you answer back a lot. I was wondering, do you ever think metal or hard rock will ever come back to the fore front? Or will it keep dieing?
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 5 лет назад
That's a great question. I believe metal is still very much alive, it's just not mainstream. And I'm ok with that. When you go mainstream, you become a slave to the what the labels want, and all they want is for them to make money. Nothing wrong with making money, but it shouldn't be at the expense of your true fans (in other words, keep giving your fans what they want and what they expect). Me personally, I'd rather have 1,000 die-hard fans of my music the way it is than trying to please the masses with playing something lighter or something that's just not me. Now, in the United States, metal isn't as popular as other countries. In fact, most of the metal bands I listen too are from various European countries (Arch Enemy, Nightwish, Delain, Amon Amarth, Sonata Arctica). And metal in its true nature is never really gonna be radio friendly, especially in the U.S. I think it's one of those things to where people will say metal is dying, but there are still plenty of great metal bands touring, and those fans are hardcore! Because of that, Metal will never die!

@jasonstallworth

Very helpful thanks! Studio monitors.. been looking at yamaha hs8 or adam a7x with my Axe III. Or do i need particular monitors depending on genre? Mostly trash/heavy/black/power metal but also softer music. Bonus question, have my desk in north-right corner, and TV middle-left corner. Will it sound good if i sit and play in the sofa infront of the TV as infront of the desk? Not a recording question but.. :)

The monitor type/brand shouldn't make a difference for genre - it's all about hearing the true sound coming out.

This video is so helpful...but my studio (ok it's a box room in the house where I'm currently Working From Home) doesn't have a cool axe like you have casually sitting in the corner XD Can I still record without this critical item!? Seriously though, I am in need of monitors, I have a little desktop speaker (Bose Mini Soundlink) which I am currently using. Have you replaced those Rokit 5s?
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 3 года назад
Brother, you absolutely need a cool axe to record good music! Lol I do like m KRKs and have been using them since 2010 (these same ones). They're small, 5" and that's perfect for smaller rooms (you definitely don't want huge monitors in small studios...it will throw off your mixing). And I don't plan on changing that setup anytime soon. The other thing about studio monitors is you get used to them and the more you use them, the better your mixing gets!

You can definitely master your own work. But I do not recommend, unless you're a pro at mastering and it's something that you do for a living, or at least on a regular basis at a professional level (meaning people are paying you to master their work). It's a good idea to have that second pair of ears, and again, someone who is a pro. That's just my opinion if you plan to release something professionally.

When I record a youtube video, I usually record myself playing a cover to the real song in reaper when various plugins, etc. After that I use a video editor called Camtasia and I bring in the audio from reaper after I edit the recording and render it down and shit. I then line up the video which I mute with the audio, then upload it to youtube. Jason, do you do this like I do or do you record the video on the fly?? By that I mean do out line out the audio from your DAW into your camera?? Can you please explain to me how you record your audio? Am I doing it right because again I mute the audio that I record with my camera and bring in the audio and sync it with my video. If you would please respond to me, it would help me out big-time.
