I’m sorry Lucas, you may not know…you absolutely cannot frame a floor by laminating floor joists together. You would have to have a carrying beam below the seam to support the overlap. You can’t rely on glue or nails to hold those joists together. This way of framing could cause a catastrophic failure. If the joists weren’t long enough, you could use a pocket beam supported on both sides.
@1806StoneHouse
@1806StoneHouse Год назад
Hey, we checked into this and I think it’s ok. It’s a 16’ span. 4’ of overlap and we’re going to be blocking every 2’ for added support. It may not be to some standards. But, I don’t think it’s going to fail. I do plan on doing some “tests” just for fun though. I do appreciate the feedback though. 👍👍👍
@1806StoneHouse
@1806StoneHouse Год назад
Unfortunately, a pocket beam wouldn’t work ( or I would have probably gone that way. When, looking at the old joists that have lasted over 80 years, it’s hard to think new 2x10s 16” on center won’t hold up. Right?
@michellerobinson1318
@michellerobinson1318 Год назад
I'm so glad someone mentioned this, I was telling my husband who has built homes all his life and he said no way. You would have to run a beam down the center to support it.
@MassCasualCarpenter
@MassCasualCarpenter Год назад
I hear what you’re saying. I’m not trying to be a sideline critic. I’ve been a carpenter for a long time. That design would fail inspection no matter how short the span or how much blocking. I’d suggest running it by a structural engineer (or at the very least, an architect). I just don’t want to see you get tooo much further before you realize it needs to change.
@1806StoneHouse
@1806StoneHouse Год назад
@@MassCasualCarpenter No problem, I can ask my engineers and architects ( I work with ) it’s funny and maybe not acceptable.. but, this will not be inspected. Huge difference, it looks so clean and neat. It must be so nice that you're right next door instead of across town and that Sarah can help so you're not trying to juggle material by yourself; sure makes it go a bit quicker. As far as the lay out/floor plan, you have so many great subscribers that will submit plans. Maybe you could narrow it down to 3-5 and let the rest of us have a look at the plans and make suggestions based on the ones you're leaning toward. PLEASE tell me you're keeping a back stairway. So many older houses had back stairs and with such a large house, just think it would be nice to have them. I'm sure someone can come up with a great plan to incorporate them. Wouldn't it be nice to walk downstairs from the bedroom, right into the kitchen for that morning cup of coffee and not through the whole entire house, yes, yes it would!

Are you going to remove the old roof in the passageway upstairs? With the stonewall coming almost half way up it would look cool to have them on display and if yo dont want it open between the stoneside and the new you can build a flat wall on either side of that stone-"fence". Makes more room also with out the slanted roof in the way. On the kitchen i would move the door where your pinkfoam collection is inwards toward the stoneside and then get bigger lying windows two or three on that and then have the kitchen on that wall so when your cooking or doing dishes you can look out to Sarah´s garden and the kids playing.

The new floor structure looks hugely better than the old one, though I am always worried about using hangers. I am so used to laying beams onto a solid wall structure, I know methods are changing where I live, but I have been used to the ways that I have been used to for too many years to suddenly switch thought patterns. Do not get blown off course, you are doing great work, stabilising and vastly upgrading the structure, as your family's living space. I can see and admire how hard-working the pair of you, Sarah and Luca are, but take care of your physical health. Heavy work can take its toll, I have a shoulder operation tomorrow to try to repair accumulated damage. Working overhead and even raising my arms has become increasingly painful and is now nearly impossible.

We will see! It’s only a 16’ span with a 4’ overlapping. The plywood, glue and 20 nails will certainly hold a lot. Upstairs is only a bedroom too, very small bathroom. After blocking and 3/4” plywood this will certainly be stronger than the old floor and that lasted 80 years. So, though it may not be “code” ( not sure, didn’t check ) it’s certainly strong enough. In my opinion

Then a nice L kitchen setup shape where the stairs used to be going towards the rear door, with an island/breakfast table with stools. Then where you wanted those 3 windows you could do a 8 seater table or a really nice wooden bench, just depends on personal preference.

When I remodel a space, I draw it out on graph paper to scale and lay the plan out on my counter or coffee table or bed (depending on where I am remodeling) and "live with" that layout for a few days. Then I may tweak the plan a bit and live with that one for a while. Eventually, I end up having "walked through" the new space enough times that I am satisfied that I can't do any better. This only works if you are able to visualize with a two-dimensional drawing, of course. My last remodel was a kitchen, and no matter how I planned it out, I realized that I HAD to move the back door which meant hiring a crew to cut through the cement half wall. Big job. $800+ for that one hole, but worth every penny. Now I love my space and the layout. It is such an important room and there is so much prep (wiring, plumbing) that you really want to get it right even if it goes a bit over budget.

Hubby also cut out a portion of the roof to add a dormer for more headroom in the loft. When we remodeled the kitchen one wall didn't have a piece of wood any longer than 6-8 inches, they were just nailed together until they got a frankentwo-by-four, hubby was amazed the wall hadn't collapsed but it stood for 60 years.

I remember you saying if possible you will make something better. Would a structural engineer suggest four 1" bolts with nuts and wide fender washers for each sandwich? Wouldn't want to deal with a sagging floor after the fact. When did you first get the bat? Bats can squeeze through a hold the size of a dime. 25 years ago we bought a renovated 1912 farmhouse. It has a formal dining room, a three-stool eating bar, and a built in eating nook. The nook seats three adults on each side of a 46" wide by 62" long table. The table is mounted to the wall and supported in the front by a carved piece of three inch thick by 16" wide front support. A casement window sits 6" above the table top. Awesome summer breezes through it. Surprising to us, the nook became our family focal point. In addition to most meals eaten there, the kids hang out in the nook with their friends, homework was done at the table, and crafts were made there. Each side of the table features a padded bench seat which lifts up to reveal 8" of storage the entire length. Plenty of leg room under the table and shallow bench seats. When buying the house we though the nook was "cure" not thinking how important it would be to the family.

There are many holes for the bat to get in and out right now… also yes. We do plan on bolting the boards together so great idea😉

The door window situation to the back. Have you considered double/French doors? Large ‘window’ yet functional. In a way a flow from outside to in.

Ahhh. Never thought f a French door as a functional window! Love that!

What about bolts to strengthen the connected floor joists? Just a thought.

yes! we are talking about that now.. i think, it would be well worth it and may help a lot.

Yes, that is my thinking as well, a few lag bolts on each one. I must admit, what you have done here makes me a bit nervous……I am not a builder by any means, but considering you want a washroom on the top floor, a joint like this in the middle of the joists could be in need of a support for safety.

Wow! We love the progress!! Question: Did you make a trap door to get into the crawl space below the kitchen? Or is there a way to get in there if need be??
@1806StoneHouse

We can get into that space from the stone house’s basement

Would using a metal strapping around the nailed/glued areas increase the strength of the joists?

I’m sure it would 👍
