Yes I do use another android app as the Cambridge one keeps doing all sorts of odd things (usually switching off). Of course there is still no album art but it is more reliable . The most important thing though is the sound quality of the unit which is still fantastic . So I would still recommend the unit and don't regret my purchase . Kind regards , al.
Hi, The problem you have is I think linked to the issue many developers have in developing for Android. While the API allows for tablets, many manufactures do tablets very differently. For a developer this is a big problem as they have to develop for a massive market. Add to this the complexity of different forks of Android. Many have got around this by developing for specific tablets like Samsung and the Google Nexus devices, however, many just give you the phone app. A small company like Cambridge Audio does not really have the resources to develop for every Android device manufacturers whims. Look at Naim, they don't even have an Android app! The same reason. On the iOS side though there is a clear API for iPhone and iPad. Much simpler and far easier for the developer. This is why the iOS app for iPad shows the album art. It is nothing to do with your uPnP server. If the files have embedded album art it will show up. The solution here is to get a old 2nd hand iPad2 and enjoy the app which will probably be much better supported anyway.
One suggestion is to try the Linn Kinsky app. Being Open Sourced, it works with many streamers and is very functional. It has an Android tablet optimised version as well.
I brought one of these in the Jan sales - and have hooked it up with no issue. The app works fine on my (2 year old) android Motorola Xoom tablet. What I had to do to get the album art to display (both on the tablet and on my old iPhone 4s) was set up a different UpnP server on my windows 8.1 computer. I went for the Mezzmo in the end. What I would like to see is a connection to Deezer streaming and a windows ap!
On page 9 of the stream magic 6 manual there's the following info, that explains why you don't get to see album art, etc when playing/browsing through files stored on a USB-stick or HDD. It says:"It is however highly recommended that UPnP is used for continued use of stored media as the UPnP system is able to support album art, sophisticated content browsing and filtering and other features not possible with simple folder browsing." (I had the same experience with a Naim ND5xs earlier this year. Streaming music stored on my PC, by UPNP showed all the info I could want, including cover-art. When playing music stored on a USB-stick/HDD you just don't get all that. I hope this helps.
If you use a good UPnP server like Asset Db and tag your files well including album art it will indeed show up on UPnP Renderers. The issue I would say here is the Android version of Cambridge's app is not optimised for tablets.
I have the same streamer, and use a Western Digital My Book Live NAS-drive, running a Twonky-server, and the app on a Apple iPad Mini, and it works beautyfully, with albumart.
HI thinking of getting one soon how is the app now have seen there have been a number of updates since you done this video. Just interested to see if it has inproved. Cheers
They'll solve it eventually. Maybe you can switch to an iPad in the mean time (or another android app with less functionality, if that's possible). Let me know.:)
