Home Safari - Painted Dogs - Cincinnati Zoo 

A friend of mine is a professional outdoor/nature photographer and around a decade ago he did a shoot in Mozambique as part of a feature on a Painted Dog rescue program being run by a South African based non profit. Mozambique is essentially a failed state and all wildlife is seriously threatened by destruction of habitat and massive poaching both for food and for trophies. The program involved feeding a pack of painted dogs who were being protected in a reserve and had become habituated to (specific) humans dropping food off and my friend set up his cameras a certain safe distance away as instructed by the regular team - there was no fence. He described how the pack arrived after hearing the vehicle and how beautiful they are but how at various times quite eerily they all stopped eating and looked at him in sync with (he swears) a look that said 'he'd make a nice snack'. Very much a pack predator.

these were my absolute favorite animals to visit at the zoo when i was a kid. i even remember two of their names “maggie and zulu.” they aren’t at the zoo here anymore unfortunately. so nice to see a good sized pack there! such gorgeous animals ❤️ thank you for the work you do for them

Awesome video!! "Can you pet them?" "Only once." Hilarious! I also took note that you said you don't go in there with them. That info stood out because I see in these videos keepers are in with some surprising species - like the big cats - so it's a surprise that you don't go in with painted dogs. I'm not on Facebook, otherwise I would've asked you to talk about the difference there. I'm glad you said they are not related to hyenas - I would've thought they were, just because they're wild dogs in Africa with huge ears and some somewhat similar vocalizations. I'll have to read up. Thank you very much for showing us these amazing animals.

They are called wild dogs. They are very popular in Africa and very vicious.

It's probably good that they can't be domesticated, because they are gorgeous and I would love to have a dog that looked like them.

I think zoo's with AWDs should randomly shake the buses somewhere in the enclosure to mock potential danger and predators, keep that instinctive weariness and constant vigilance alive. And esp do so when they have puppies.

It would be devastating to lose them...

These guys in the wild eat quite viciously. I believe it's from the fact they need to eat quick before their kill gets stolen from bigger predators.

In the same video you said lions were responsible for 60% of painted dog deaths in the wild and also called them apex predators. Both can't be true.
