Home Secretary James Cleverly has written to the Metropolitan Police and the Mayor of London after antisemitism campaigner Gideon Falter was threatened with arrest at a pro-Palestinian rally in the capital.
Mr Falter was told that he is 'quite openly Jewish' and was causing a 'breach of peace'. The force have since said the incident was 'hugely regrettable' and apologised for its response.

...and not to advise him as to his safety? That contravenes H&S and civic responsibilities of all individuals. Frankly he is, in my view, a citizen of a country whose government is engaged in Genocide. It is not just my view and I appreciate others may not agree. While that is no reason to threaten or perpetrate violence against him, it does seem to me that given the strength of feeling on the streets of London he would be well advised to stay away from pro Palestinian protesters. Common sense, not the law, dictates the police should not put themselves at risk and the fault is not that the policeman was wrong, but that the police attempted to justify their decision and threaten arrest. If the policeman had said "I cannot guarantee your safety" would that not be accurate?

Wrong, their role is to prevent any breach of peace that could come from counter groups clashing. They normally separate counter protesters and this is no different. Gibbon was there specifically to instigate violence - even pushing past the cops to continue his attack - so he had to be prevented.
@irresistablejewel

No; the role of the police here is to keep the peace (during a protest march); while (let's not be naive here) the antisemitism campaigner's role here is to stage-manage a situation where he can play the victim (Faltner has even dressed up for the occasion). Those marching in protest have obtained a permit to do so, while the general public often don't have permission to cross the route of a: parade; protest march or marathon course; so in this case their rights supersede his. While I believe the police were ensuring Gideon's safety (he's obviously not the sharpest tool in the box) and he needs to learn to follow police instruction. What's his next publicity stunt going to be? (Wearing a Ranger's shirt in a Celtic pub, perhaps?). Poor Gideon.

Hard one innit, if they let them go past and some random protester attacked them, then the police would have been seen to fail as well, for letting them in a dangerous place. The Officer was crude in what he said though, but they usually are, with several of them making a lot of the situations they are in considerably worse.

Police always keep rival group of protesters apart. To prevent any antagonism that could lead to conflict. This guy was free to protest the Palestinian protest but that doesn't mean he was free to enter the march in order to protest. The police sergeant explained it poorly but it was the correct outcome, protesters are always separated from counter protesters.

It seems like the Jewish people are the first class citizens of the world because I don't understand all this OTT BEHAVIOUR. If the same thing had happened to a black person everyone would have agreed that the police officer was trying to protect the black person and the black person is trying to antagonise the protesters. There's no doubt that Jewish people are currently being attacked more because of what Israel is doing and by the way, I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH ANY FORM OF DISCRIMINATION OR MARGINALISATION. This man in the video was trying to prove a point and unfortunately the police fell for it because that's how they try to protect people in those types of situations. I just don't understand why the police apologise twice, (never heard of that before) now the home secretary is contributing to the apology!!! Wtf is going on.

However walking into and through a progressive protest line, no matter what ones race or religion, could be interpreted as provocative towards those protesting, for which a police cordon has been established in the interests of public safety. Of course he has the right to freedom and to walk the streets, however if a riot breaks out the police might be able to prevent serious harm or even worse. It would only take one very angry protestor to trigger a frenzy, leading to a riot. I mean what kind of wish does this man really have ??? Does he think the police could protect him from serious harm, like knights in shining armour ??? Police could then be putting themselves at serious risk of injury. Police have to make a public safety judgement call. This dude with the strange cap was trying to selfishly make a point, that didn't need making and he failed to appreciate the broader picture and how things could rapidly deteriorate, despite his rights, with which nobody denies I'm sure.

The officer should face disciplinary action, and the policy of giving protesters greater rights than non-protesting citizens because of fear to offend removed. I understand why Jewish people are in fear if the tone of the police and policing is turning against them in such a strong way. Overt Jews banned from Central London because of fear to offend is not that far removed from having to wear a yellow star.

It all depends on context, the police officer has clearly seen something (more than his kippah) or heard something which would affect the situation on the ground. There are many Jewish people who join these marches. Therefore, him being openly Jewish is not an issue. The marches are really well organised with little or no trouble albeit even 1 such incident is regrettable. I would invite this gentleman to join me in the next March wearing his Kippah.

In 2023, following the CAA-led March Against Antisemitism, the British Jewish organisation Na'amod released a statement about their decision not to attend the CAA-led demonstration, stating: "we know this march is not just about antisemitism. It’s clear from the event description that CAA has organised this march in response to huge weekly ceasefire demonstrations in London."[55] Na'amod publicly denied CAA's characterizations of the prior ceasefire marches as antisemitic, saying "This could not be further from the truth. Pitting Jewish safety against Palestinian freedom doesn’t make Jews safer; it makes fighting antisemitism harder. I absolutely agree.
