I recently bought the Berlin door thing (though mine is a different brand). It says it will stop up to 800 pounds, so a battering ram with 1500 pounds of force is >stated max defense, but that 800 pounds will keep out any normal person without a battering ram. And either way honestly a door lock is a delay, not an actual stop. If someone tries hard enough they can get through any lock, or any door, but these will give me time to get my gun and the alarm will call the cops when they break in and get shot.
Good man! I am obsessed about making sure the house is secure and my family is safe. Involves not only hardware but an established system of actions that the family would need to take under different circumstances. Thank you for showing us that it’s not as difficult as people seem to think it is. I love the 2 x 4 option and I’m going to set that up post haste!
So true about established system of actions. I had a visitor to my house while i was away captured on Nest doorbell. He didn't do anything "wrong", just was identified as someone I did not know. I realized that had I been home I might have opened the door before asking him questions. Since I live alone, opening the door might have been a BAD decision. I had also recently invested in some firearms and taken a one day class on firearm safety and felt very confident. However, when I went to load my clip and load the gun, I found that I would not have been able to do so under stress. Good lessons to learn before a situation arises.
Kudos for your awesome review. I purchased a set of the CZU Security latches and installed them on my daughter’s front and back doors. Somebody tried to kick in her door last Saturday morning and they couldn’t get through it because of this device. The frame where the deadbolt and the door latch was completely split, but the intruder could not get through the CZU. I hate that I had to have a real world test of the device. But, my daughter is still safe because it didn’t fail.
The 2x4 bar holder should include a closed bracket on the knob side and an open bracket (like you showed) on the hinge side. That way, the 2x4 can't be lifted out of the brackets with a shim. Some people also use a fixing pin to keep the 2x4 from being slid out sideways.
@griggs3d can you be more specific with your question? I doubt I can post links. Search for "2x4 bar holder bracket" then cross reference what you see with my comments and ask me any more questions you may have.
The one you thought would not fail , but of coarse did--Home Defender it's called.I installed on my doors out of the way of a direct hit. Someone tried to get in from the garage side door. They used a flathead screw driver to jimmi the lock. The Home Defender did not move. Just a lot of marks on the metal. I think it will work. Good video from Sacramento
@@williamabaker12 If you're standing in a strange place and it's 1oclock in the morning the owner will hear you entering the property if your noisy. They lose the element of surprise. Most people own a gun. Criminals know that. My door to the garage is also locked. The locks make it very difficult to surprise anyone in the house. They use the windows most of the time. Of course they're locked too. Good locks are a good thing.
I had two of the berlin modisch installed on my front door but after watching this i replaced them with the CZU. I woulda used the wooden bars but the wife wouldnt approve the looks of it haha. Thanks for your video!
Greatly appreciate your video! We just had a break-in at a commercial building. The deadbolt on that door is tough. But there was no striker plate, and all they did was gouge out the wood by the bolt and the door opened. I’ve used the U-shaped brackets and 2 x 4 method before and it has not failed me yet..
As a Locksmith for several years in NYC … First thing to know is that pretty much any lock/latch is really only designed to; “Keep Honest People Honest”. Second, don’t use any “cast” materials (except for bronze) … cast cracks, shatters. That said, These things shown are not “Primary Locks”. A correctly installed Medeco D-11 Deadbolt with Strike Reinforcement and Hinge Pins (aka Door Dogs) on the hinge side will stop everything.
For #3, your test door didn't have any trim pieces installed. The trim will stop #3 from bending backward. There's also a 4"/8" version of #3 which can withstand up to 2400lbs of force.
The problem I have is with the patio glass panel door, they can just break the glass and reach in to open any dead bolts or latches. This is why I've been looking into security screen door to be added right outside the patio glass door.
@@griggs3d Thanks, I just looked it up and here's what came up: "Although 3M™ Safety & Security Window Film and Impact Protection Attachment Systems are effective in minimizing breakage threats and delaying forced entry attempts, they do not make glass 100% unbreakable or shatterproof. You can break it by using hammer or any strong metal stick. You can't break it by hand or feets." Well, if it can't protect against breakage with a hammer then I think it's pretty much useless... Just found another: "No, 3M Safety & Security Window Films are not hurricane-proof, earthquake-proof, bullet-proof, bomb-proof, nor burglar-proof. Again, they are designed to make the window glass more shatter-resistant."
Glad to see a video taking down these cheap amazon options. I'm an information security kinda guy but being a new first time home owner have fallen into the rabbit hole of locks and physical security. Sure, the door braces aren't pretty, but even one set is magnitudes more secure than your builder grade latch and deadbolt. That being said, the frame reinforcement you showed is a weak option in of itself. without reinforcing the hinges and placing plates that wrap around the latch and the deadbolt, and securing the jam, there are weak points everywhere around a door. all that being said, thank you for posting this. i'll be using this video to help educate family and friends about the importance of not only quality locks ($100 for a good pick resistant lock is worth more than your thousands in jewelry and electronics) as well as security in layers. fun fact -- you can save money on homeowners insurance with adequate, verifiable controls.
LOVED THE VIDEO! Unfortunately, my 20 y/o dau has a psycho ex who has done EVERYTHING to make her & our lives a living hell, FORTUNATELY she's left him, but we're on edge & looking to reinforce security, BIG TIME! NEVER realized just how susceptible we were! I just watched another DIY 'security' vid that took me to Amazon to buy the reinforced strike plate & 3 of the products YOU just demonstrated FAILED MISERABLY! We would've been out serious 💰 & possibly MORE! Something told me to watch a couple other vids to get more input on products I saw popping up on Amazon & GLAD I found YOU! Thanks a lot & take care! Subbed & notified!
Stumbled across your channel. Looking for ways to step up security overall for my house. Had a meth head come through the woods, hop my gate in my back yard. Hopped my gate again and went to the front door and was pounding away on it. Cops came but had gun in my hand just in case.
Just added those 2x4 brackets, and the strike plate to my cart. When I’m working on rentals I screw and unscrew structural lags in and out of the back and basement doors every day. This is gonna be soooo much easier Thank you
You can see the whole test door and frame you made moving and bouncing a few inches with each hit. That movement is absorbing most of the energy instead of stressing the locks
This video would have been more effective if you showed each product in their original packaging..... and also held the items still so we could actually see them, instead of waving them all over the place. Other than that, good info!
NEVER fails to scroll down & read critical comments on a vid... If you had your OWN channel & did it BETTER, I might just give a damn & listen, but REALLY? Everybody's the critic!! He named the products, listed them & showed them on the screen WTH MORE can you ask for... Jeebus crisp!
Great review👍 on these door security items. I'm glad I came to your channel before buying that first security item you reviewed, because there are other RU-vid channels that swear by them. But experiencing your demonstrations we know which one takes the cake. Thank you.
Have you seen how strong the glass security patio doors are? Basically impossible to break through. Forgot the brand but I'm sure you can find it on RU-vid somewhere..
Hello sir I have an exterior door that opens out any ideas or tips for that Thank you so much for making this video I almost got some of those same locks you just showed thank you for your hard work testing them out
Thank you. I am now convinced I picked the correct, cheap door block... 2x4 brackets. At least a year ago I bought a pair for my front door as it has a sidelight which is weak as hell. I failed to follow through with another one for the back door though.
Long screws in your doors hardware. Deadbolt, strike plate, and hinges. At least 3" long and preferably 4" Predrill so you don't split the studs. Way better than all these products as a baracade.
What a great demonstration! Though ReSecure Latch was invented to resecure your loose door latch or deadbolt from the inside, I wonder if it would help in a break in situation. One day, when we have the finances, we will have someone test out how ReSecure Latch can reinforce a door.
The only problem with this test is that while you found an effective device to prevent the door from being pushed open, you still need to account for the type of attack that spreads out the door jamb. That means, those brackets that hold a 2x4, that 2x4 needs to go way past either side of the jamb.
Don't overlook the tiny 1/2" screws that are normally on the hinges ! You need to add at least two 3" deck screws into the studs and at least one 3" screw into the door itself on each hinge of the door . Now you have security on both ends of the door .
Wow, this is the best (and most entertaining) video on this I have seen. One of these locks I had on my list I was going to get, too. I can't believe you rammed the door this many times! My front door was breached before I bought my house, and another attempt was made last month.
The door clips that you pointed out, are not made of Steel, they are made of Zinc...How is it possible that zinc out performed Aluminum. I thought aluminum was stronger than ZINC!!! I agree Stainless steel door clips would be optimal - wondering if the profile is enough tho, considering the door cavitation/warping. maybe that is why the Zinc ones indeed faired better. Superb Video...Much Gratitude for your hard research. Any info on Steel door tested would be greatly appreciated. Also Multiple Clips an option, Door Armor Max, on guard bottom braces, kick stand door braces - if you attach to floor with Bivy pins and attach to handle - Stainless Steel reinforcement Blocks for Grade A/1 Lockset. Multiple throws on Door. Many of these claim by themselves to hold back 1500-3000lbs of force...if stacked or multiplied...it would seem that would be the best solution. Also 2x4 wood? What about 2x4 tube steel? just some ideas...and comments...Awesome Awesome video!
Do you think the CZU would still work if it was lower on the door? My back door has French windows so if the lock is too high up, it would be easy to smash a pane, reach in, and unlock it.
OK, I’m saying hello. Hope I win the Security lock. The other thing is regarding my front door security. My door is fiberglass but it has a side light window. You said you worked in home remodeling before so you know the problem with a 3” bolt not able to be installed in the frame. How do I screw in the long thick plate you showed into the door frame if the long screws are too long for the sidelight window? Please?
As of late I’ve been trying to come up with a door that can be secured the same way as a ship’s watertight door, but for a building, kinda like a mixture of the 2, considering that those type of doors are meant to withstand tons of water pressure, I think it could be a good idea, what do you think?
@@dannycbe949 this is not about windows, but here this should hold you over for a bit www.trudoor.com/rockwood/lt-b1-vision-lite-kit-pack-with-fire-rated-safety-wire-glass/?attribute_pa_finish=gray&attribute_pa_order-size=8-x-32&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj_ajBhCqARIsAA37s0yUrwGAEUghNcJCxjxd0IEwvvQx4yIgE_9XpGz7TXQLkgsZQEbQpswaAmt2EALw_wcB
I’m a 73 yr old women and scared at night all the time Thank you for the information . Tell me how to buy this stuff please. My side garage door I could probably kick in , in bad health . I need help !!! Things are getting so bad now days .That door I just told you about needs a whole new door frame to start with. And I live in a nice part of town.
These are great options, however these are supposed to give you enough time to secure your kids grab your weapon load and unload into whoever is coming in. I have the door brackets and a 2x4 and they are rated for 800 pounds direct force.
I'll tell you what, the only downside to the 2x4 is that you have to actually use it. Way easy to break in when the 2x4v is leaning next to the door. #1 failure =complacency
All security solutions can be installed without drama on demos or new construction, but my house was built in 1951. It has brass weatherstrip on 3 sides of all four entry door frames. Further complicating installation, it has trim on the inside of the house. I can't even install those oft-lauded 3" screws on the hinges without major surgery, using some sort of tool that could cut out the weatherstrip. It's very discouraging.
I here what your saying, but let me a sure you I can add security solutions to any door some may not be cutesy but we have add some to 15K doors.... You have to be the one decide on a dollar value for your security. Go over to the new forums post me a picture of your door and I try to explain what would be a good fixe for you. Rather new or old doors doesn't mater the DEMO is just sowing some options
Some one wants in and if they have a background in remodeling/ construction, or home improvement.... They would simply use a utility knife and quietly cut out a nice section of drywall and walk right in , or use a cordless DeWalt sawall and cut a hand full screws and the door will push out of the door frame 😂
