This a home shad tank that I put together recently. The tank allows me to pick up my bait ahead of a fishing trip or store unused bait after fishing. I enjoy fishing for striped bass and using live gizzard or threadfin shad is aguably the best way to target the bigger fish. Having bait on hand is very helpful as catching quality bait can be extremely time consuming and might mean you miss the opportunity to fish during some of the most active feeding times.

in the summer time... when the temperature is really hot. how do you keep the water cool enough for them to survive ?

Where did you get your pumps from (both of them) and do you need a pump as big as the 1600? Also what is the purpose of the PVC extension to the right out from your pump? Also how do you have your PVC drain setup that extends to the middle of the tank, whats on the end of it, and is it flush with the bottom?

You can get the pump from www.thepondguy.com or a similar online store. The PVC extension allows me to drain the tank. You can also just put a hose in the tank and start a flow by sucking on the end of the hose till the flow starts....but Shad water doesn't taste too good! The drain is an extends from the sidewall and has a 90 degree elbow facing down to the center of the bottom of the tank. I cut the bottom off a bucket and mounted it on the bottom of the PVC elbow with silicone. It is flush to the bottom of the tank. I drilled holes all over the bucket bottom to allow water flow in.

Search Google for "Water Tanks". I purchased a 550 gallon or so tank and cut off the top with a jigsaw. The strap around it is a basic ratchet strap from the hardware store (helps tank to keep its shape). The filter box and pumps were purchased from a local pond supply company (think Koi Ponds).

How about temp changes with type tank since not insulated? And do check ph and ammonia?

Temp changes not a huge deal for shad as long as you are over 45 and under 75F, at least that is my experience. I do check ammonia and PH. High ammonia usually results in water changes. PH issues are usually addressed with baking soda.

How do you keep your shad alive? Mine always die after I catch them and put them in a 5 gallon bucket.

You need more water volume, filtration, and air bubbles.

Tried for years to keep shad alive in a 55 gallon aquarium with no luck. Used plenty of aireation, water temp correct. No luck

Depends on outdoor temps and how many and/or how large shad. I have kept 50+ 12" shad in this tank for over 6 weeks. They looked emaciated at the end though (no feeding)
