I am very traditional, purchasing quality pieces and keeping the look fresh with fabrics, art and color. Classic trad never goes “out” and can be adjusted to reflect current styles.
Nothing is more boring than an all WHITE kitchen! My dining chairs are cane backed, but the dining room suite is almost officially an antique and is heavily carved French traditional.
I hope my home IS dated! Most of my furniture is at least 90 years old. Actually made from REAL wood and natural fabrics. Most of my my mom's furniture was about 400 yeats old!
I was a professional interior designer in LA for many years. Although I retired in 2017 and left California I still like to see what's trending currently. I cannot tell you how happy I am to see a movement toward less sterile looking environments, which I never felt were very welcoming. I always encouraged my clients to incorporate some type of large natural element within the space; sometimes they'd take my advice, sometimes they wouldn't. Thank you for this wonderful update.
Love the hair! God help me, they are HANGING ON to words-on-walls here in the midwest. These ladies WILL NEVER PART WITH THEM. I can't live, laugh, love anymore. CAN'T.
Every industry wants you to buy more and more often. It's not just interior design. Look at how cars change over time. More features become standard features because they force to you to spend more on the car. That's just how the economy works! It's not a bad thing... improvements can be great. It's just a matter of knowing the difference between what you need versus what you want.
But see, this video takes on the the tone of shaming viewers who cling to a style too long or disapproval of those who do not update big and often. Get ahead of the other channels by discussing inexpensive changes we can make in our rooms without looking “same same.” It’s not up to me to keep the home furnishings or automotive industries afloat. Being smart with money is the only way out of an incoming economic crash. And none of the style channels addresses this.
@@TheAseliason I actually tell you over and over it's your design style that matters. And I give you tips in this video on how to address some of the changes without actually having to spend more money (ie. move things out of the one room). Shaming is a big word.
@@Designchickee If you say so. It seemed you were a bit heavy on the encouragement to stay away from the “On its way out-isms” by updating and redecorating quickly and furiously in a more superior tone. I know you make your money from this. I’m not attacking your work or your need to make a living.I would like to see videos that look at the bigger picture and are not so superficial. Show us one of your own rooms filled with items you love. May the recession/depression bring creative new content ideas. I mean that in the best way.
@@TheAseliason if I have a superior tone it's because I've been an interior designer for 25 years. It's not all about pretty trends and RU-vid videos. I just had a client in a car accident... we're now retrofitting their home to make it more accessible. Design is all about making home feel more like home. Thanks for the comments.
@designchickee thank you for saying buy what you love, express your own personality, don’t overdo on latest trend. So many of us need to hear and embrace that.
Yes! I try for a timeless look. Really don't know what's 'on trend'. I'd sure keep that wicker planter, tho. Very friendly looking, but, I'm a plant hoarder, so what do I know? lol
Normally, I don't strictly adhere to what's in and what's out but I am so glad to see the frigid coldness of the institutional/industrial look go out! Being in a coastal place, I love a tropical look. I never liked the cane look, wicker, yes, but cane no. It looks like you have speakers everywhere. I had to get a new cooktop and dishwasher a couple years ago and had a choice of black, white, or stainless steel. I absolutely hate the look of being in a restaurant kitchen and hope that look disappears soon, and never ever comes back. Stainless steel is a fingerprint magnet and not as easy as one thinks to keep it clean. I absolutely hated my black cooktop and steel dishwasher. It reminds me of the current car color trend of black, white, gray, and maroon. Ugh. Regardless of what colors are trending, I still like the beachy pastels. And good riddance to the sanitized monotone look of all white. The other look I love is the warm colors like terra cotta, and a Spanish feel to a room! When someone walks into my place I want them to be comfortable, welcome, and at ease, not like they are walking into a room straight out of the latest modern architecture magazine. Actually I prefer the colors of 2023 better than what's coming up next year, so I won't be changing much. I enjoyed your video, thanks!
I would loathe being so shallow as to follow the home design or fashion trends. Personally, it seems that people who are so easily influenced cannot find their own style or personality. Traditional never goes out of style.
So people are shallow bc they like to change and keep up with what’s in style? For fun I would guess your views on other things but you already made that clear.
@@Designchickee I’m glad you chimed in and makes me giggle seeing someone talking about being influence easily yet they are watching a channel that is about change haha. I might do a video call with you come summer. I have ideas for my house and furniture from family that will work but figure why not get an experts take. My cousin who is studying interior design at UNT has helped me narrow down ideas lots.
Designers always show such large expensive homes. Most of my friends don’t have homes like these. We are just middle class but love having warm and pretty interiors on a budget.
What I have found is when I get ideas on decorating I have an extremely hard time finding the items I need to bring it all together. About three years later I find that what I envisioned and pulled off is now in style and I find pieces easily. But by then I am off to a new design having problems finding what I need.
I'm selling my home, saved me thousands not having to repaint all my main walls. Glad to see grays are going out. I have warm color neutral wall paint, keeping that way for the listing. My cabinets are maple with warm colored stain, saved me money there too. Thanks for the video!
I had no idea that caned furniture was a recent design thing. I haven't bought new furniture in years, so I guess I wasn't noticing the trends. Much of my furniture is vintage (such as a Duncan Pyfe dining room table), and I didn't need to redecorate anything. :-) I did notice the greys, were much better than the avocado green and gold and orange of the 70s, but I did grow tired of all.the.grey. Happily, I didn't need to paint anything during the reign of the grey, so I was safe. :-)
It's not new. But like I said in the video, it was being used EVERYWHERE for a while. Nothing is new. We can't reinvent the wheel. But trends can lead us towards new ways of doing old things. That's why I love classic details and furniture. They never go out of style.
I never went for caned furniture. It looks cheap, and is a hassle to keep dust-free. The closest I came to that were some wicker baskets that can easily be changed out for a modest price.
Many of us simply don't care what's in or out-----or what someone says is in or out. We lead real lives, have jobs, care for family and loved ones, often with serious illnesses, and just don't waste any thoughts on whether our home is outdated or current in style. And, what's in today is out next week........so who cares what you say or tell others to do in decorating their home. Do your own thing, be happy, save money, and enjoy life.
Hi Susan... interior designers help clients create their dream home. They actually pay me for advice because they don't want to waste money. See how that works? So yes... your home should look like your own style. And that may change one day to the next. But that doesn't mean the interior design world is bad or silly or not important. But thanks for watching this trends video even though you don't care about what's going out of style. :)
I have always done my own thing when it comes to decorating my home. After all i am the one living in it. 😁 but this was interesting to listen to. I say decorate with what makes you feel good. Use common sense and look to traditional ideals that never go out of style. After all it is your own space and should suit your tastes and likes.
Who gives a hoot ! My home is for my comfort , not money making for others . My house is clean , in good repair and to my liking . No wonder there is so much waste on this planet !
I agree with respect to extreme minimalist. I’m a minimalist but I also collect art that cover my walls. I have gray in my bedroom but I add warmth with my art. I also do this in my bathroom.
How about you don't follow the "trend" and just do what is classic? Then you are always in style. Wouldn't say that white kitchens aren't a trend, they have been around ever since people starting cooking, making and storing food indoors. The original lime wash was a way to keep things sterile and visibly clean. This has lasted for centuries and many more to come.
I like that you always do a summary. Trends are for fun and to keep life interesting by having something new to talk about. I just get what I like which is more available when it’s trending
No one forces you to adopt the latest trends but they are definitely fun to talk about! Every industry changes... nothing wrong with that. Thank you for your kind words! I love a good recap/summary too! :)
Who has money to keep redesigning your house every few years. New paint colors is an easy change but continuing to buy new furniture and throwing out a few year old pieces isn’t sustainable
LOL... well then all of us interior designers are out of a job I guess. Do you realize that most interior designers work with their clients to help them realize what they want their home to look like. We don't dictate what their home should look like. We help them create their own dream home. That's why all my client's homes look different.
I will ALWAYS love a white kitchen, but I would probably only have it on the cabinets, backslash and trim and possibly counter if a stone or stone look (like marble, white quartz), but I’d probably have a bit of color on the wall and always pops of colors in accessories. Possibly butcher block counter and wood floors.
My cabinets are painted white. As they are in good condition and functional, I decided not to replace them but just to give them a fresh coat of paint. We did new countertops, though, and went with a Grey Silestone which reminds us of soapstone, and a grey-and-white, basketweave tile backsplash. We painted the island a dark Hunter green. I don't know how stylish it is (or is not), but we like it.
So ppl throw out perfectly good stoves? Who ARE these ppl? More money tha sense , as my mom'd say. My washing machine's almost 40 yrs old and works faster and better than what u can buy today. I can lift the lid after a min or 2 of agitating, thus, presoaking whites overnight. I can put a load thru an extra spin if needed. None of these newer machines are worth a hill of beans in my opinion! Obvi, I'm not dictated to by trends. I set my OWN trends. Never been a follower.
I was so “afraid” you were going to say olive trees are out. I just ordered one…..after having “just” enough $$ for it. Lie to me and tell me they’re still way on trend. LOL😂
I'm loving the fresh, fun and gorgeous haircut. And I love seeing the weather in the background from your window. I appreciate the way you get to the point without skipping on the details. Looking forward to more informative videos. Please give us a home tour.
SOME "Trends" are space dependent.!!! In a cramped, small, NYC rental apartment you need an all white kitchen, nothing dark especially a studio apt. w/ separate kitchen space. AGREE with that trending GRAY everything ...that was the WORSE!!! PLUS it was fun watching the snowflakes falling outside your window in mid-April
I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment. Awful tan paint. Very dark fake wood floors, white woodwork, white vertical blinds to floor. Not much I can do. I need to buy new bed linens and try to ignore the tan walls. I have a neutral beige sofa and wood bookcases on one wall and the usual end table, coffee table, and entertainment chest for the TV. Honestly, I am so bored with my home.
I just do my own thing and people love my home. I have always got the same comments that my home is so inviting. This video reminds me of a person I’ve previously worked for his house was so cold. Everything was white and gray even though this was over a $2 million home honestly everything looked cheap.
Hmm… I used to cane chairs for a living for private customers and antique shops…and I’m hyper alert to any decor that features caning, danish cord, reed, etc…and I have to admit I never saw one piece of caned furniture in the past two years in or on any interior design venue….ever with the trends leaning to reintroducing modern furniture styles that originally featured it quite heavily. How odd…….
We are thinking of doing a slatted wall to one side of our living room in our remodel home. We want it so we can hide a closet door that faces the open living room. Will this be something that will look dated shortly ?
My Victorian home is very dated. It is amazingly beautiful with lots of Victorian antiques with a beautiful upstairs parlor and game room. A couple of downstairs rooms are more modern. My parlor and pool table game room took me 5 years to to finish and $20,000 I don’t think I’ll change anything. I even have 1780s Windsor chairs that we still sit on. IKEA stuff won’t last that long. Good luck y’all.
It takes so long to get a Victorian right. And definitely expensive. It’s like once I got it right I just don’t want to change it. The modern rooms no problem. But there is something about the amazing antiques and the opportunity to protect them for the future. Great video by the way.
