Homemade roller furling made from bicycle sprocket, threaded rod, u bolt and hasp. $10.00. The good thing is the metal on the bike sprocket is thick and strong, its stainless or chromed so it doesn't rust and the nuts are stainless along with the hasp. I am not a professional sailor, but I tinker a lot and spending hundreds of dollars for this seemed a bit much. Just an idea to throw out there for consideration.....

Nice! I am contemplating one for a kayak.... so it can be home made like that. The 'tinkering' niche of sailing is wonderful.

Looks good. But the main force on a sailboat will be in another direction than on a bicicle. How does it work in real life?
@blhack123
@blhack123 3 года назад
The force here is trying to stretch out the allthread/bolt. The bearings inside of the wheel hub are set up to take the load of furling/unfurling. This is a good design.

To be honest, I can tinker with the best of them, but I am embarrassed to admit that I have no idea what an extrusion is or even a luft wire. There is an additional stay wire that goes up alongside the jib wire and hooks to the mast just above the jib, if that answers your question. I am an amateur with sailing although I have sailed a bit. I bought an old Flying Dutchman and am restoring it. Got it and the trailer for $150.00 and may be putting it in the water this weekend.

@phillipsmith7237
@phillipsmith7237 11 лет назад
The bike sprocket is stainless steel, thus doesn't rust. Probably doesn't meet specs for serious sailors, but at least I can afford it. :)

just one from the dump. The axel popped right out. If I recall, it was a small bike from a child's bicycle. Good luck.

one possible upgrade can be to use the original nuts which goes to the two end of the sprocket - that would secure the bearings and my help with the axel. Great work!

Ingenious use of material and engineered nice and simple. Thank you for sharing. Not to be a grinch, but what you call a hasp is generally and widely known in most trades and especially the maritime one as a shackle.

Great idea! I was working on a furler using a lazy susan. Your idea of of a wheel hub seems better. All of the hubs I’m coming across have an axle with ball bearings that must be removed. May I ask what brand/model your hub is and where you got the hub?

@stevehaines6857
@stevehaines6857 8 лет назад
+Jason Robinson Well it went Ok at first but the issue was wither the bearind on the wheel hub I had so I am keeping my eye our for another. the sysytem seemed like it woud work great if your bearings dont freeze up on you. I added a guide for the furling line and ran the u bolt thru a theaded cap for a piece of 3/4" PVC with a slit in the side that was attatced to aswivel at the top then the sail slide into the slit( with a rope sewn into it seem). I did have ther pvc joit let go once but I think the was just a bad glue joint it then worked until the bearings went bad.

I think it needs a spring that will provide tension when then sail is unfurled and the tension to re-furl the sail back into the rigging.
@hardystein114

You don`t need a spring. Just unroll the sail in opposite direction.
