Hi Charlie! A work of art. That's what your beautiful layout looks like. It's like seeing the innards of electronics working! Fantastic stuff to learn and to teach. Terrific work. De VU2RJV handle Rajaram from India.

What a nice build, Really Great ssb Radio. Hope all works well, I wish I was able to build this but being almost Blind and in my 60's won't happen, God Bless

I like that you resisted going the Arduino "menu" route and rely instead on rotary and toggle switches for your inputs. Menus may be necessary for portable rigs owing to limited front-panel space, but they're a totally-unnecessary bother for a stay-at-home rig. --Todd K7TFC

Agreed. I like the look and feel of a real switch. Not to everyone's liking, but that's fine.

@@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM What if you used a 24MHz SSB filter? The front end would then need just one LPF.

Thanks Tom. I had it on air again last night and I am very happy with it. The new code is working very well, less noise and birdies.

Hi another great video, thank you very much .... but I think at SSB the Bfo = Fop + Cf - 2400/2 - 300 and the Vfo= Cf + Fop , another thing to mention about cw from compatibility point it is usually an lsb signal and the screen show the carrier freq. not the tone freq. I think that will eliminate some confusion at some point when working some stations on cw .... keep the good work and looking forward for the next video
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM Год назад
Thanks for the input. My approach is to have the display show the actual CW freq. I will adjust the TX software to ensure my CW signal goes out on exactly the same freq. I did that for the tramping CW rig and it worked well. Thanks again and 73.

Hi Charlie. Great video series, I have learnt a great deal from watching, many thanks. One thing I'm not clear about, what does the A/B switch do, is this to switch between CW and SSB?
@technishn
@technishn Год назад
Looking good. Can't quite see in the video but the SI5351 outputs should be AC coupled.
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM Год назад
Hi Kevin. I have used both AC and DC coupling with the SBL-1, ADE-1 and TUF-3. I fond both work equally as well.
@technishn
@technishn Год назад
@@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM If running into a high resistance load DC coupling is OK, but with low resistance loads DC current is shunted towards the low resistance path via the Si5351 internals. A small improvement in Phase Noise gained. See QRPlabs phase noise article

Hi Charlie, thanks for your videos. I always learn something new ! Question, is the output of the Si5351 filtered? It seems to be fed directly to the diode ring mixer? I could not find anything in the blog regard this. Thanks for sharing all of this!

Charlie, Could you please identify the black stubby item attached to the Siglent AWG used for the CW test. I should like to get one to use with my own SDG 1032X for the same purpose. Graham, ZL1GH

Hi Graham. It's just a stock standard 'rubber ducky' antenna. It works well. It also bends nicely if you accidently knock it.

Hi Charlie is there any reason why you chose two crystal filers instead of one filter where you use variactor diodes to vary the filter bandwidth?
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM
@CharlieMorrisZL2CTM Год назад
No Chris. I did have a think about using varacter diodes, but elected to have two filters. I wasn't sure if I would still have to have two different terminating resistances to get the right passbands. I really should give it a go as an experiment.

If you look at the circuit of the Elecraft KX1 it is done there. This radio is not just CW on the RX side hence the variable B/W filter.

Probably not. I like the modular approach and having the rig all open. Each to their own.

I also like the modular approach, say if you want to maybe try a different IF amp or something, it just makes it so easy to just swap it and try.
