We're sampling two smoked homebrews: a traditional Grodziskie, brewed with 100% Weyermann oak-smoked wheat, brewed by Ryan Schenian; and freestyled smoked beer from Chip featuring alderwood-smoked malt from Sugar Creek Malting. The guys taste the beers, talk about the recipes, and rap for a bit about smoked beers in general. #homebrew #beerreviews #smokedbeer

Smoked Marzen is just my game. I get the little Sami reference in the name but I wouldn’t say 6.3 is a “mini Marzen”. It’s fully leaded my man. You are an animal! Cheers from out east.

That is a great point. Guess I said that because it was not intentionally that kind of beer, but certainly what it turned out like. How about "Accidental Smoked Marzen-Syle Bier?" 😀

I did a smoked grisette that won pro-am and was brewed w Top Rung. Loved that beer. It had exactly what Ryan mentioned, big smoke nose but soft flavor that complemented the wheat. (I named it Smoke Wheat Every Day as a nod to you and BA Bryan, Chip.)

Very cool! Great opportunity to have it scaled up. Loving this style. What yeast did you use and what was ABV?

My 0.02 grosze (Polish cents 😂). I don't know if it's possible to acquire proprietary Grodziskie yeast strain in US. But here in Europe/Poland, trough various homebrewing shops, it is. Produced by yeast lab Fermentum Mobile - they have it trough the whole year round (FM51 Oakengate). So use your Polish Connections, or order online (in winter preferably). They should deliver it within a week.

Thanks for this info! I'll share it with Ryan.

Interesting stuff. The commentary kind of confirms my suspicion that brewing with smoked malts really requires a test run to understand what the particular malt is bringing.

For sure. In many cases, a little goes a long way. But I really like strong smoke presence myself. Smoke for smoke!
