I use a Meross 2 Outlet on my porch and it has been great for my string lights and also a Christmas tree. I have not had any problems, but it’s not too far from my Wi-Fi.
I have the Meross 2 plug and love it. It’s taken the Florida sun and rain for over a year with daily use. It controls my exterior lighting and has never failed. I’ve also used the Aqara wall switch to control it manually when not using the timing automation.
I'm still using a Caseta lamp module plugged into an extension cord and inside a ziplock bag with tape sealing up where the wires go in and out of it, LOL
My Meross outdoor plug has worked and connected flawlessly and Siri understands commands well. I can turn off the outlets or the “fan” or “deck lights” equally simply. Was on sale for $19.99
Very good video, I have been waiting for someone to do a comparison video. I have 4 smart outdoor plugs, I bought 2 idevices back in 2018 as it seemed to be the only option back then for HomeKit. They have been solid with no issues. I have had them outside and plugged in since 2018, one of them is used nightly for our patio lights. The other two I bought last winter are 2 Wemo plugs, was excited to see this at a great price point. I have a few wemo items running in HomeKit and they are all reliable. Where we live winters are long and cold, up to -40. Both my idevices and wemo have worked through all of that with no issues. Of final note, besides setting up automations to run these, I have a couple hue switches insides which are setup to control the on and off function and scenes.
That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing your experience. I did the same a couple of years ago with the iDevices plug, as it was the only one around that supported HomeKit at the time. Glad to hear it, and the wemo plugs, survived the winters there. Also love hearing about your automations! Great thing about HomeKit is being able set up physical buttons like that to control any of your smart accessories. I’m a big fan of that. Nice job!!
Good video! Meross 2 plug working solid on my end. Perfect for holiday lighting. Also use it for two (separate) bed nightstand lights. Another in the garage for table top lighting and a fan.
I had the Meross and it recently took a dump after a year, think the AZ sun burnt it. I was considering the Lutron but i dont like the need for a bridge. I think im going to try out the Wemo.
Nice review! Am a firm believer of the Lutron ecosystem. I have multiple Lutron smart plugs & switches though-out my house. That being said, I have the IHome outdoor iSP100 plug and it has done the job for me. It was the only game in town a few years ago. I only use it 2 months of the year, so while I love the Lutron, I will keep the my current set up until it dies.
Great video, I looked up the Meross dual plug and its rated to 15 Amp, but total on 2 plugs, so if drawing 10 amp on one then the other is 5 amp. Mind you with a 15 Amp rating, use is usually only up to 12 Amps
I have a few Meross outdoor plugs, both the Homekit and non-homekit versions. I initially had connectivity issues, but they went away after a firmware update. I just use them for holiday lighting, so amperage is not an issue.
I used the Meross 2 plug last Christmas for outside lights in sub-zero Michigan weather with no issues. Did not have any issues with dropping cold temps. It was for only about month though.
I’ve got the Ring version. I use it for ventilation fans. It works with HomeBridge for HomeKit, but only displays in HomeKit as a light💡 . I have long been requesting from the developer to configure it properly as an outlet, so users have a choice in HomeKit to display it as an outlet, fan, or light. But I guess it’s too difficult for him. So, if you need an outlet like this and want your choice to display it how you want within HomeKit, you may want to avoid the Ring option. On the positive note though, it physically works well, other than what I’ve mentioned. It also has an angled plug🔌 .
Hey Shane, I really enjoyed the latest video and I wanted to say that I really appreciate the spreadsheet showing all of the information for each of these outlets. That is very helpful to me in helping me see the differences between these outlets and which ones I would want to consider for my home. I currently have the Meross 2-outlet plug and I do like being able to control the two outlets separately. But, do I really need that capability is questionable. I too have also had issues with the WiFi dropping out on my Meross outlet. They do require excellent WiFi coverage in my experience. I already have Lutron Caseta switches throughout my house and I am seriously considering changing the Meross outdoor plug over to the Lutron outdoor plug. I will make that decision around Thanksgiving in time for putting up my Christmas Lights.
Thanks Frederick! I'm glad it was helpful. One great thing about Lutron stuff... it just "works," as I'm sure you've experienced with your Lutron switches. Your comment is getting me excited to get the smart holiday decorations set up already! 😃 It will be Thanksgiving before we know it!
Love the full comparison! Nice to see them all side by side. Would be great to see something similar with the light strips. I think you’ve reviewed the majority of them. the best in category at the end is very helpful.
Thank you for the video. I have the same experience with Meross Outdoor and Indoor power outlets in that they frequently drop out of the wifi network and become unreachable in the home app. I should have tested throughly before I bought quite a few of them.😞
Thanks for watching! And sorry to hear you've had a similar experience. Hopefully Meross will make some improvements over firmware that will help that issue.
I purchased some iHome outdoor plugs for Christmas lights and am going to use them for string lights in the summer when my deck is finished. I think it’s rated for 15amps. They are hard to come by though as they seem to be out of stock everywhere. I think I bought it for $40 at Home Depot on sale but in Amazon they are $84. Build quality is good but that’s too expensive in my opinion especially when I got mine for $40.
Nice, thanks for sharing! I figured they stopped making them since they don't seem to be available online. Hopefully they'll become available again and that price will go back down. The more options the better!
I've had meross stuff installed for a couple of years. So far 2 switches have failed, 1 dimmer and 1 standard single pole. So far all the plugs have been solid but as stuff goes bad or I add stuff I'm going with Kasa. Then again I use echo, not apple so I don't have to worry about compatibility.
I’m “at war” with my Meross devices… they are always unresponsive (happens almost twice a week). Light strips, outdoor plugs etc… And the light strips even keep a little light on even when they are not in use. Having one in my bedroom producing light at night rendered it pretty much unusable… And don’t get me started with the plugs in my backyard… unfortunately Meross are the only outdoor plugs I can get my hands on…
I don’t like the way these plugs look “dangling” off an outdoor receptacle., especially for a permanent install like cafe lights. Does anyone make a Weather Rated smart receptacle? I just installed two Kasa smart switches off a GFCI indoor receptacle and ran to a standard split WR receptacle with in use box. That’s the best/cleanest install I could think of.
Do you have a Amazon page? I have seen a couple other smart home RU-vidrs with a link to a Amazon page with all the gear they have or have used. But most of them are google or Alexa.
I do not currently. I do have a recommended products page on my website: shanewhatley.com/products/ It does need to be updated tho. I'm in the process now of updating it so that I can keep it up to date easier moving forward. The benefit to this is I can also link to products outside of Amazon, which I do fairly often.
@@ShaneCreates thanks Shane, my issue seems to be even though I’m using thread devices they seem to go non responsive and I thought a change in hub might help
Very sad this kind of plugs are not available for this side of the world. Also those companies are not available here (Meross, Wemo, Lutron). Hey Shane! I have a question! I have several Aqara Temperature and Humidity sensor throughout the house that show up in the state of the house all together as a unit. If you use an Eve Weather (obviously outside the house), does the Eve Weather combine with the Aqara sensors in the same “Circle Tile” or does it show up independently? Thanks Shane!
It does show up in the same tile, as it’s just seen as another temp sensor. You can choose not to show it in the status section if you want, but if so, it will be grouped with all other temperatures.
I disagree about Wemo let me tell you why. This plug I’m unsure about but I have 2 wemo outlets inside my house and the do not support wpa2 encryption which causes me to downgrade my security on my wifi and allow possible breaches
I was never able to get the Wemo to connect to my WiFi. I tried for hours even with temporarily disabling my 5Ghz band from my Eero routers. I exchanged it and still had the same problem. Very frustrating considering I have 3 indoor wemos that seem to work just fine!
This may be an odd request but would you turn off your wifi, turn it back on an see which ones reconnect and which don’t? I find iDevices are just useless in reconnecting back to the network. I have to unplug them and back in. Sucks during xmas.
I made switch to the Alexa ecosystem due to relentless disconnects with HomeKit products. Not only relentless disconnects but also having to reset the devices all over again from scratch each time.
@@artieartya This isn’t a HomeKit issue as I have this device in all 3 ecosystems: (google, echo & homekit) If I reboot my router, it drops off all of them.
Hi Shane, have you ever heard about SOMFY TAHOMA Premium Box? It's - as far as I know - a French product, works with Apple HomeKit. I need to buy one because the built in motors of my blinds in my new house work with this only. I would be grateful if you'd share your experience or make a video regarding this product. Thanks :)
Definitely not ANY smart plug. If it’s a smaller pump then it may be possible with something like the Lutron plug, which can handle up to 1/2 horsepower motors and pumps.
Was hoping for Luton outdoor plug to support dimming option same as Caséta Wireless Plug-In Lamp Dimmer if lights are connected.. may be in next generation. Dose anyone know outdoor plug with dimming . Thanks
