Without a doubt one of the most popular characters in the Boys universe is Homelander. Homelander is the defacto Superman clone that every single comic book universe seems to have in it. If you are writing an independent comic book about superheroes, chances are high that you have a Superman-clone in your universe, and Homelander is that. Now from this point on in the video I will be covering some aspects of Homelander's origins, powers, and comic history. This contains a tremendous amount of spoilers for the comic book version of the character. I have no way of knowing if the show will follow in these footsteps, so consider yourself warned.
Be sure to watch all the way through to prepare for the Boys Season 2

Homelander works for a corporation, not the government. He's literally just the result of what would happen if a greedy corporation found Superman first. They market the hell out of him for huge profits and ignore/cover up the terrible things he does.

In the comics he's a blunt instrument unable to plan past the short term. Being 2 dimensional is part of his flaws. In the show he's cunning, conniving and plans which is terrifying because he is still the remorseless, spiteful and attention hungry manbaby he is in the comics.

While characters like Butcher and The Seven are better in the show, I really think Mother's Milk, Frenchie and The Female are better in the comic and steal every scene they're in.

The Homelander in comics at least tries at times to be a hero, just makes stupid choices. Like Captain Hero in Drawn Together. He’s eventually deteriorated. The Homelander in Prime’s version is evil from get go. If anything, he only values his image but doesn’t want to put in any of the work.

Homelander is more understandable in the Amazon series. You get how resentful he is towards humanity for being treated like a lab rat and continually used as a tool for the mega corporation. He kind of has some of the strains of a Magneto, but absent the narcissism and amorality. At least Magneto cared for mutants. Homelander cares pretty much about himself. I like how he honestly doesn't know why Butcher hates him so much as he never raped his wife. It appeared to be consensual. He seems to identify with the Butcher and in a weird way he respects him.

smellmyclock what If they’re not going that route in the Amazon series? In there series Homelander hasn’t been blackmailed so there’s really no reason why he wouldn’t remember sleeping with Butcher’s wife. The ending leans more toward that it is his son. They’re probably going to be like “The walking dead” in a sense where they use the comic book as more of an outline but will deviate when they feel it’s best for the show.

@@smellmyclock - Art's talking about the Amazon series, not the comics. Homelander tells Butcher it was consensual and she "came" multiple times. Homelander remembers the encounter, and finds out he impregnated Butcher's wife. The whole point is the Amazon series is drifting from the comics.

I'm interested to see where they go with this, as they have deviated away from the Butcher/Homelander story line. But then what is the point of Black Noir being revealed now? since Homelander is already a straight up Psycho. Noir wouldn't be committing these acts as Homelander does them anyway?

But we do know Homelander does remember having sex with her - (he doesn't in the comics) - Since he remembers, it doesn't appear that Black Noir raped her in the Amazon version. My favorite thing about the boys tv show is the world itself, I have always been a fan of Else-World stories like the DC Justice Lords where the supes in charge were mostly malicious. But the TV series elevates the concept in my mind by providing the much needed social commentary and a more nuanced look at these characters and concepts than the comic series did.

From what I hear the comic is basically Garth Ennies at his absolute worst in violence, extreme scenarios, & his hatred of superheroes which can make it rather unreadable. The show essentially had to turn down & change a lot of stuff to actually make it watchable.

I like how fleshed- out Homelander is in the show, giving more in his character that the comic did not, especially on his backstory still being intact but added more on how those around him see him and how he sees himself. However, I don't think the tv show will depart too much from the comic as they will dive into more on Homelander and how Black Noir (A currently enigmatic character int he series) will play a more significant role just like in the comic. Season 2 will also feature more heroes, possibly some form the comic, like the rest of Teenage Kix, the G-Men, and Payback (I want to see Tek Knight humping a meteor and wish to see Stormfront being taken down by the Boys).

There's 100% gotta be something there. Every other Supe in The Seven had some shit going on except for Noir. How coincedental it was that Noir was the only one who never had any problems....Homelander himself even points it out in one of the episodes. We NEVER see under the mask and see him in general very very sparingly throughout the show. He just MIGHT be The Homelander Clone like in the comics... Regardless, Season 2 sure as hell is going to be interesting.

Learning a bit more about The Boys I am glad there is creative licence for the live action to go in a different direction and become less predictable. I do think this is the type of adaptation that Alan Moore wanted to see with his own works, keeping the spirit and tone of the source material, but exploring alternate avenues.

If you enjoy The Boys comic series, you might enjoy Zenith by Grant Morrison (before he became wellknown).A lot less violent, but as sharp in it's storyline.

Most interestingly is the fact that he actually wanted to be a good superhero. His anger at Black Noir basically scapegoating him and the company manipulating him is great, as it shows that deep down, he could have really been a great hero.

Homelander is actually the best character in the show, the way the actor portrays him, just via those subtle facial expressions mixed with the overly American superhero persona, make for a really interesting character, he's kinda like All Might or Superman but messed up, or a better comparison would be Injustice, in fact the whole thing is similar to Injustice, it's great.

When Queen Maeve opened up his mask to feed him the Almond Joy, you can see the glimpse on his skin that he's black. So, he could be Edgar's son in the TV Show or somebody else not as Homelander's clone.

Great video! I never read the comics but I LOVED the show! I feel that Homelander is written and acted incredibly. Antony Starr steals the show, he is an absolute force... No slight to anyone else as the entire cast is terrific. It is just the overwhelming sense of being terrified of this guy every time he is on screen. Can't wait to see more of The Boys... I will be watching season one again this weekend... This time with my wife.

I loved the show. It was utterly raw, humorous, and depressing all at the same time. What I don’t understand is why the public would naturally accept and believe that superheroes all of a sudden started popping up after WW2? Wouldn’t people question why this sudden appearance of supers started happening and why they didn’t appear throughout the rest of history? Why now? I just think some people would naturally connect to the dots to the actual origin of supers.

I think that reveal about Black Noir is something that might still be part of the show's storyline. They seemed to be cryptic about his character and revealed very little. Probably see something about this in season 2.

The bit with the soldiers and their weapons jamming is taken straight from the earlier part of the Vietnam War and the initial problems with the M-16 rifle. Gun powder residue and crud in general built up on and around the ejection point and eventually caused jamming. The rifle did this because Sec'y of Defense (under LBJ) Robert McNamara and "the best and the brightest" decided that the maker of the M-16 was just padding their bottom line by having the ejection port area chromed. Turns out the chroming prevents the build up and clogging and eventual jamming, as when M-16s started being produced with chromed ejection ports, the early jamming problems disappeared. McNamara and the "best and the brightest" knew better because they had gone to top Ivy League schools and were absolutely sure they knew it all and were essentially infallible.
