Homeless at 67: Cathy's Struggle for Shelter in Grants Pass

Cathy shares her story of living homeless in Grants Pass, Oregon in this powerful and emotional interview. Having lived in her car for six years, Cathy's journey highlights the severe lack of affordable housing and support services in the area. Her story is a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by many and the harsh realities of homelessness.
Cathy's journey into homelessness began when she gave up her home to care for her father, only to lose him a month later. Despite receiving a Section 8 voucher, Cathy was unable to find housing before the voucher expired. "I've been homeless ever since. Trying to find a place is just about impossible, to the point where you kind of give up," Cathy says.
Living in a car at 67, Cathy describes the fear and challenges she faces daily. "It's kind of scary. I'm almost 67 years old. Almost deaf. I have a dog with me now because I don't hear to let me know if somebody is approaching the car. Because I've had one of my daughters hurt out here already," she reveals. Cathy’s daughter, also homeless, was attacked while living in a tent, a harrowing experience shared in our previous documentary.
Cathy speaks out against the judgment and misconceptions about homelessness. "It's really not fair. All of us aren't like that. Some of us work, some of us have jobs, you know, just trying to stay afloat and to save money to get a place." She emphasizes the need for empathy and understanding, urging people to stop and listen to the stories of those experiencing homelessness.
Grants Pass has implemented a camping ordinance that criminalizes sleeping outside, further complicating the lives of those without homes. "Now they've even taken most of the potties away that people were able to use. So, you know, it really makes it really rough," Cathy explains. With no available portable housing or homeless services, the situation is dire.
Cathy dreams of a secure home for herself and her daughters. "I'm hoping to be in a home before winter. If I can make it another winter," she says, recalling a life-threatening blood infection she contracted from living outside. Her resilience and hope for a better future are truly inspiring.
Through this interview, we hope to shed light on the urgent need for affordable housing and compassionate support for the homeless community in Grants Pass. Join us in understanding Kathy’s story and advocating for change.

About Invisible People
Invisible People works to change public perceptions of homelessness and influence policy change. Many people mistakenly blame homelessness on individuals rather than systemic issues like affordable housing shortages, unemployment, childhood trauma, and insufficient wages. This misunderstanding hampers efforts to address homelessness effectively.
Our vision is a world where everyone has a home. We aim to fight homelessness by humanizing it and educating people about the systemic issues behind it. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are shifting the narrative on homelessness.
Our impactful educational content reaches millions monthly, breaking stereotypes and prompting action from governments, brands, nonprofits, and individuals. Yet, the fight continues as homelessness remains a major societal issue that requires immediate action.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since 2008, we’ve been a pioneering and trusted resource in North America and the UK, inspiring action and dialogue around poverty.

Maybe too expensive for you to make it down to Quartzsite, AZ for the season, Sept 15 - Apr 15. $180. Includes water, dump, garbage and plenty of porta potties. I'm from NH but head down to AZ every winter in my RV. I really like it. Hundreds of people there for the season living in their cars and many other things. Lots of small cars with tents setup. Some really nice camp sites. Miles and miles of room. Great place for all you Grants Pass people to head to for the season. Plenty of people ready to help you out with rides to town 2 miles down the road and to Walmart. Have a campfire every night and cook your food!!!! Nobody bothering you. I mean nobody. Just checked. 950 mile trip. I can tell you whatever you need to know. I'm not poor and not rich. You all should really really consider coming to Quartzsite for the season. You won't regret it. This place is massive. Miles in every direction. Room for 1/2 the country. Not really but it's HUGE. We could all camp together and come up with a name like "Friends of Grants Pass". So, come on down

I could no longer work as a hairstylist and ended up homeless in 2008 when everything crashed. There were no services available for a single injured woman. They had to take care of families and women with children first, and there wasn’t enough resources. Whole families were living in cars. I only survived because a woman who was a junkie and homeless for 20 years was trying to get her life together, took me in. She protected me, shared her food bank food with me and taught me how to survive on the streets. She was mentally ill too, still using and extremely unstable, so she would kick me out then let me come back. I started working again in less than a year, still on crutches, doing hair, while waiting for disability. I started renting a room In peoples homes, 3 times a nightmare situation.

I lived in my van for about a year because of family issues. I wasn’t on drugs (still not), I had a job (still do), and I never caused problems or left trash. The only thing outside my van was my little generator. It wasn’t that bad for me because I converted my van to a camper long before the family drama and thought of it as an extended camping trip. A friend let me stay in his driveway and plug in during winter so I could use an electric heater. I worked, had money, and kept to myself out in public. I’d run my generator in the evening to cook and recharge the battery that kept my mini fridge running and nobody really bothered me. I am housed now and I have a different van that I also converted into a camper. I absolutely love traveling in my van! It wasn’t scary either because I don’t live in the ghetto. I stayed in decent areas and because I wasn’t a nuisance I got away with it.

Rex Heuermann, the man who killed 4 "sex workers," didn't live in the ghetto. My point is that there are many places where true evil lurks even though they may not be called ghetto. So try to refrain from stereotyping.

@@MPam1619 I wasn't trying to stereotype as much as use words that anyone could understand. I could have said bad area, low income area, high crime area, the hood, ECT. What will come to many people's minds when they hear that? "The ghetto". If I came off as stereotyping that wasn't the intention. I also get that criminal activity and violence can happen anywhere but if you're in a statistically low crime area there is less chance that you will be the victim of a crime. I also have no need to go to those areas, however you might describe them, because I don't do drugs, I'm not involved in criminal activity, and I don't know anyone who would live there. So with no real reason to go to higher crime areas some might describe as "ghetto" I simply avoided going near them. I think most people could understand why someone would choose to avoid places like Newburgh NY (upstate) or the South Bronx (NYC).

After six years living in the van in all kinds of places around Australia, I've encountered a lot of different people in different circumstances. Generally, considering all those in modern 4x4s with hundred thousand dollar rigs on vacations, with all those in older model vans or wagons, or rigs worth under ten grand, I'd have to conclude overall in general that the most reliable way to get poor and homeless and expire from stress exhaustion is to be a good person and the most reliable way to get wealthy and have fun vacations in luxurious RVs and such is to be a bad person.
