@CO How about removing all government rules. These homeless people could build actual structures or let organizations desperately trying to build cheap housing do their thing. The truth is homeless people simply don’t have the mindset to do what is minimally required, that’s why they are homeless. It’s simple. Work/beg/steal, save, invest

You don't need to go to skid row to see the real downtown or LA . Its all over Hollywood and even Koreatown now. Tents and trash everywhere. Very gross . La is spinning out of control.
Danced for decades in LA's street dance culture hitting up countless underground warehouse parties and clubs all over LA. Never have I seen LA in such horrible condition. In areas that were once homeless free are now overrun with homeless and their trash. LA is in decay no doubt.
I've dealt with this population in my past career. Unfortunately, they don't want a 9-5 job. They don't want to pay bills. They don't want responsibility. Would it be easy just to give them money and build them houses, uh sure. But, most people want equality, and just giving money and free rent isn't equality. I've seen people refuse a decent paying job, with some benefits, a cheap place to live, because they have to stay off drugs. They don't want to. And Unfortunately if you give and give, they will take and then say you don't give enough. Everyone has a choice. And of you ask them would they want to work 12 hours a day and pay bills. They will refuse it. I wish there was a way simple way to handle this situation. But there isn't an easy or just solution.
There are plenty of people in LA that work and live in cars. Theres many who work and can't afford a 1 bedroom apt. There are many who are mentally ill and can't afford a lawyer to get SSI. There are many who can't get hired because they don't have an address. Theres many who just want a free handout. Each case is different. When you say there all alike you become part of the problem.
LIFE is about "CHOICES" !!! IF one makes BAD choices, early in their life, then they WILL have a crappy life !!!! But IF folks make the effort, go to work, take care of business, then they WILL experience a BETTER life, for them & their families !!!!!

I believe I heard that a lot of homeless shelters require you to get clean and stay clean and there are just some people who dont want to do that. Its hard to try and help people that dont want to change and try to get better

I worked in downtown LA on Figueroa near the 7th Street Metro Station back in 2002 and there were some homeless people walking around on the streets but not many and absolutely no tents, not even in the notorious Skid Row area. Now eighteen (18) years later and it looks like a sprawling war torn refugee encampment throughout the entire downtown. It had just started to become revitalized with the Staples Center, new swanky apartments and condominiums but now those who bought into those properties have to deal with all that mess on the streets outside their buildings and are stuck with properties they will never be able to sell.
LOL! man ya'll just drinking the kool aid. This will not be coming to "every american city" cause most cities would not put up with this nor do they have the weather or infrastructure to support it. What you see in LA is a mix of perfect weather, lack of mental health facilities and an infrastructure that allows for people to live this way.
The sad truth is that local politicians are getting rich from the homeless issue. So much federal funding has been given to local government to help resolve the issue. As long as it continues to be an issue, there will always be money coming in. Where it’s being dispersed is anyone’s guess. I venture to say it’s lining the pockets of those who govern us.

You sound young but very aware and asking great questions - I started noticing this area about four years ago. It's always been there but I think the question is when did they (the City) allow these tents to go up in businesses and residential areas. When I lived in Miami homeless couldn't even close their eyes on a bench in fear the cops would throw them in jail. Funding needs to be given to local nonprofits who can help these people...drugs, alcohol, mental issues...many of these people have to where to go except the ER and they usually get tossed out. We need less handcuffs and more resources for people living horrific lives...check out Union Rescue Mission here on RU-vid...they are front and center in helping Skidrow
I have made some bad decisions in my life but one of my good decisions in my life was moving away from L A back in 1992 after the riots and never to return, that is one city that I can truly say that I hate lmfao
You can't have people pitching tents and taking a sh*t wherever they please. It's not fair to the rest of us. They can set up an area--maybe the LA Coliseum--where they can go.
Accidentally watched a video about US from utube recomendations and eventually watched a lot about homelessness, working homeless living in their vehicles, foreclosures and things like that in your country. I literally cant believe my eyes. How can it be with the leading economy in the world so many people live like that? I live in Russia, many consider Russia to be a 3rd world country, but I have never seen nothing of this kind here. We do have homeless of course here almost in every Russian city but they never build tents on the streets nor sleep in their cars. Russian homeless never have any car! With the average monthly salary throughout the country of about 500 USD for full time job (which is ridiculous in US), people here somehow manage their living. Here on Russia life is tough especially for elder people single mothers and so, but I have never seen police or someone in charge force somebody onto the street.. God bless you, Americans. Pray for you stay strong and united during COVID 19
That looks insane. The human suffering is insurmountable here. While the politicians are quick to blame the issue on wealth inequality and social justice, the core issue is that California gladly absorbs homeless from other states and rich areas into select ghettos. They are all welfare recipients and the system is designed so that it incentivizes homeless people not to work than to work and lose the benefits. And the system that serves to remedy the homeless situation is a very lucrative endeavor. There are gains to be made for Homless Industrial Complex established in California that makes more money when there are more homeless people to cater to. I have not come across any videos that address the topics I laid out here, it is another inconvenient truth. The system is well established.
I lived in Downtown for a minute and all through the Pandemic until TWO weeks ago when I literally RAN AWAY because a crazy homeless freaked out on me, so high out of his mind, in front of the CVS on 8th and grabbed me by my shoulders!!! Asked if I wanted to fight him? What? Lived in Paris, lived in NYC and never ever had to deal with such interactive homeless. I was so sickly fed up by having to skip streets, going around many homeless in the worst conditions ... Even running my essential errands turned out to be such a pain! I avoided at all cost walking outside past 6pm for so many months. Yet still paying the highest rent I have had to pay to date. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? I'm sorry. I held this in for so many months!!!! THIS IS A REAL HEALTH & SAFETY ISSUE Last year there was an increase of Hepatitis cases because of this crap that is out of control. You're walking literally on sidewalks that are being used as toilets... all of that comes to your house! My Goodness!

People need to ask themselves what better choices they can make for themselves and not expect others to do for them. That’s the problem this society is backwards. They must want to be there because of drugs and the mentality of “what can you give me?”
A lot of Drug use, bad choices , mental illness. It's great to help, but you can only help so much. People need to want better and more for themselves. When I was younger I was much more sympathetic. Now that I'm older I see it differently. It's getting worse, a lot of ' THEM' are not making the right choices.

I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live. I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck. So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible. I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade. I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration. Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .
I give Kanye West a lot of credit for trying. i.e. Those "Cones" in Calabasas - that's exactly what it's going to take. (hundreds of individual living units per Cone - and Kanye'd put about 20 of them there - neighbor complaints shutting it/him down). -But he tried - he did try. Experts agree this is what it's going to take (150-200 sq ft per unit, i.e. small studio/efficiency self-contained units). .

Here are some suggestions... First, treat individuals that are homeless as people, engaging with empathy. Talk with them if they choose and see what they need.
How is this even allowed? If anyone decided to put up one tent on the sidewalk in our town, the police would be there so fast and have them remove it. We may have a couple of transients here and there, but they are always walking. Sitting in our park for too long is closely monitored.
if they get that check they will choose to rent somewhere which will benefit the real estate sector. they'll spend all of it and all of it will go back into the economy.
The exact same tents with homeless can be seen in Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and many other cities. This is what unopposed Democrat policies look like.
It’s because in red states they criminalize you for being poor. Over here they just leave them be (not saying this is a good solution either) let’s not make this a party thing. LA county also has the population of some countries, and a good amount more than most red states plus the weather allows for living outdoors all year round; so the homelessness is very visible.
Send those homeless people to NYC. Deblasio will out them in top hotels at the taxpayers expense. My question is what is being done to make the people productive citizens?
You are in Skid Row it’s a segment outside the main downtown district. Right now the city is looking at housing inside the convention center. They are also building short term housing with case workers. In my neighborhood they have bridge housing for the homeless. The trouble is many of these folks don’t want help when the car workers screen for drugs. Los Angeles has millions of people this is a small segment of a vibrant city.

It's important that people see this. When I left Cali in 2007, San Francisco was already bad as far as lazy, shiftless "homeless" people that made their living panhandling all day yet made enough to have lofts or studio apts in trendy, pricey areas. Totally taking advantage of people's generosity. Now, a lot of the people I know are probably a paycheck or two away from becoming legit homeless.
I've from Brazil and I've been to LA in 2000... i remember it was a very beautiful city... When this homeless issue has started? It seems to be quite recent ....
You seem to have the integrity, strength, and heart to challenge our government on this issue. If you decide to do so. We will back you 100%. Let us know.
It’s cool, you’re exposing more homeless which shows how little the city’s doing with the massive taxes collected from citizens, obviously is being pocketed by politicians!
These people need an opportunity to get clean. Then they need encouragement & training for some sort of job. Then they should be moved to an area that has affordable housing. And the influx of drugs needs to be stopped dead on. If people on both sides of the equation have the drive, this misery can be obliterated. Prayers for all.
Talking to an individual who's homeless/on the streets is one of the MORE IMPORTANT ACTS OF CHARITY THAT A PERSON CAN DO! Treating someone with respect and understanding is something that you can't place a monetary value on! As an individual who's walked in a really dark place through drugs addiction and mental health issues,it meant more to me when a person took the time to stop and speaking to me like a real human being and just say that hey sorry I'm not able to give you money or anything but I can offer you a cigarette and a couple for later. That simple act of acknowledgment instead of looking at me as less than human or even worse when they look right through you as if you were invisible is just something that I can't stress enough how valuable that action is!!. So for those people who do care, I would say to you that you as an individual CAN DEFINITELY MAKE A DIFFERENCE DIRECTLY BY TAKING THE TIME TO LET THAT HOMELESS PERSON KNOW YOU CAN SEE THEM, THEY ARE NOT INVISIBLE AND YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR EXISTENCE!!
This is my home town. I was born and raised here in L.A specifically highland park (323) and it has always been bad. Lately it has gotten way way worse. I left L.A for south eastern Arizona in 2005 so all of this is exponentially crazy.

Their are people who live in skid row area that do not want housing. Some one will say that they rather say on the street then spend on rent/housing. There are many organizations in Los Angeles who attempt to help the homeless. Housing is available for those in need however some do not want housing. Others want everything for free. And some are out there living in the street due to a tragedy they had. It only takes one large crisis for somebody to become homeless. And you are correct LA county just didn’t have a sufficient shelters. This year majority of winter shelters stayed open for 12 months. N yet more are open.

I think if the city provided more public services like toilets and showers we could at least help them stay clean and have more of a better presentation and could even help their health and self esteem, we need to care more about people as a community. Sharing is caring ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
My wife and I moved here 3 weeks ago and decided to walk from the Arts District to the downtown Target. Walked these exact streets. Its craziness. Wasn’t really scary, more sad, but definitely wouldn’t let my wife walk that route alone. Was talking to a buddy about this last night. I think once the city gets a hold on COVID they will open up the convention center for people but at this point there’s not much anyone can do. With the spread of COVID I think it’s too risky to do anything right now.
