I feel like the government has allowed this to happen. Not building enough affordable homes, not giving councils the funding they need to help situations like this, this country is such a state! People deserve so much better!
Perhaps the government has allowed this to happen. Has the government provided primary and high school education to all for free? Has the government provided vocational training for basic jobs? Has the government encouraged young people to be responsible for themselves? Do they council those on benefits how to better their lives on their own? How to manage money, how to control the size of their family? Since the government is responsible for the situation these people are in, perhaps the government should take the pacifier away and provide them the challenge to support themselves.
Thus country has gone to the dogs. The government don't give a shit about working class people. Every where new build homes are being built for the rich
@@CarolineEccleston-q9c plenty of single mums have jobs. The Govt sorted that out...they don't stay at home on benefits. Don't know how people don't know this.
This makes me so angry. The people's situations in this video broke my heart - this is NOT OK. I've been one of the hidden homeless, mainly due to aging out of social care and not being adequately rehoused and/ or cared for and having to find my own way. The system is flawed. How can we as a society allow so many so slip through the cracks? Because the government certainly doesn't care. Its up to us!

@@arod9998Thank you - this is the vast elephant in the room that no one wants to look at. Approximately 1.3 million people came to this country just last year, on top of 600-700 thousand a year for the last decade. And people wonder why housing is expensive. . . . . . . . .
Everyone needs to find their own way, did you pay the government to take care of you.... I assume you were cared for and housed till 18y so should have at least thought about what you were going to do afterwards....
Every time when i want to complain about my life i recall such people living in the hotels.People, whose life is absolutely horrendous, live in the cramped rooms meanwhile i have got my personal private house.I really hope,God will give them a hand
Yep, makes me furious. Apartment blocks built are bought up by (often foreign) 'investors' who don't care if they're empty, or rented at top rates. People can't afford it, so govt have to top up with housing benefit. Why is uk public money going to mega rich foreigners? Housing is to live in not a bank account.
I became homeless while I was 5 months pregnant. I approached Waltham Forest council because I lived with my mom in a shelter and was asked to move out because I can’t have a baby in a sheltered accommodation. The council refused to help me even after housing association gave me a final notice via letter. I was sneaking in to sleep in my moms property till I had a baby and I couldn’t go back. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks because I didn’t have anywhere to go. I had to consult a lawyer who then contacted the council and they finally lodged me and me 2 weeks baby to a travel lodge hotel. We were there for three days and they moved us into a hostel where we stayed there for 5 months on a loft with my caesarean section. This was the hardest days of my life. After 5 months they gave us a one bedroom apartment in the private sector. We are happy now and grateful. I’ve already started bidding looking forward to move. In all we give God the glory. He’s been faithful❤️
Why did you need a lawyer? Once you give birth the hospital refer you to their housing liason officer who safeguard you and your baby and they work with together with the council to get your housing sorted. They can't discharge you and baby without a home
Who said anyone cannot be discharged without a home? These days you barely get to catch your breath before you're discharged, never mind anyone caring where you go! People go all the time to someone's floor or sofa. You have to have the housing there before anyone can be offered it and we don't have it. That's the real problem.
I work in the travelodge and this is exactly how it is, when the council don’t re book homeless guest they have to leave and there is nothing me as a worker can do about it. It’s heart breaking.
I had to pay 2 random nights for a friend while his housing was being repaired because his Council did this. I got the money back. Councils do this because they are trying to encourage people to go and stay with family and friends to save money. My friend has social care and needs a bed due to his disabilities so couldn't move out of the local area. The only space friends like me have our are sofas or floors, plus we live in different parts of London. Added to this lots of us who are still young enough to work now work from home. His family who have space in their homes live abroad but he's lived in the UK for over 45 years. Anyway once they tried it twice they stopped doing this as someone realised that he wasn't moving from the hotel. It took 9 weeks to do his repair because of having to tick boxes. As someone who owns their own property I know the repair should have taken a maximum of 2 weeks and I'm being generous.
This is so fkd up. You’re not a social worker, you’re a hotel worker. This is so inherently wrong. They’re putting the responsibility on EVERYONE but the people who should take it- THE GOVERNMENT.
Our local government has stopped offering hotel rooms and the womens shelter is so small it has a call in system so if you call too late, there are no beds. So now there are women sleeping in abandoned buildings because of this.

The Government has sold off housing to investors and failed to build necessary council housing for its citizens. The councils behaviour towards people is horrendous. Why are they so inhumane?
They do not care at all. I would be homless if I didn't leave London . It was bad in 2005. I feel so sorry for everyone affected by failed governments. I do think people born in the country should be made a priority. They have no where to go to.
@user-hv5so6qz9zNot everyone can afford to leave. They're stuck in a catch 22 situation. I relocated to a part of the country that I could afford as I was going to be priced out where I was living, but I had to rely on savings and temporary digs until I found a job in that area. I wasn't in a position to keep travelling for interviews beforehand as it was hundreds of miles away. It was a leap of faith that fortunately paid off and I was able to find work fairly quickly, but I only had two months savings and hire a vehicle to drive myself and my few possessions a few hundred miles. It cost more than these families could likely afford. It is not just as simple as leaving.

The main reason UK landlords don' t accept tenants on Benefits is that the rules were changed from having Housing Benefit paid directly to landlords from the Social Security offices to paying the money to the tenants. There were instances of landlords not being paid by the tenants , who very often used the money to fund luxuries they couldn' t afford. So landlords naturally are nervous about Benefits tenants. Eventually, after more expense they could evict them, but there is no legal recourse for the landlord or the government to get the money back from Benefits tenants.
The government pays housing benefits to tenants instead of landlord to treat them like responsible adults. Too many tenants spend these benefits on themselves instead paying their rent. Hence they go into arrears and the landlords have to spend a lot of money evicting them.
Because they have been bitten too many times because people don't pay their rent. Cant blame landlords. The government caused this. Cant have it both ways
because vast majority on benefits keep the money and don't pay rent with it, that's why on these eviction TV programmes the people being evicted all have brand new cars, massive TVs, designer clothing, loads of toys for their kids, and they are in £thousands in rent arrears. one of my tenants was in £11,000 arrears swore at me and threatened me for evicting him, he drove away from my property in a new Audi A4...!
The man in the wheelchair. Really feel it for him. There is no way that kind of living is good for him in anyway, shape or form. The mental, emotional and physical stress he must be going through. Yes, he has somewhere to sleep, but not building more social housing has left to many people vulnerable.
the house catches fire was it his own home ? is there any volunteers out there or community to help repair his house ? paying day to day would be more expensive if they not getting the house fixed .
They may be around but may not be in a financial situation to help. If the price in rent have gone up what makes people think the man can financially provide enough to cover the costs? It's possible the man isn't around, it's possible the man may be living in shared accommodation because they themselves cannot afford accommodation, it's possible the man is living with family, another, partner or on the streets themselves if they also can't afford to live in London or elsewhere. So many possibilities
If they were in America they would literally be sleeping on the streets, I know it’s not great but at least your country put you up in a motel, here you’re totally on your own!
This has been happening for atleast 30 years, I remember being 17 and homeless and if it wasn’t for a lawyer and support worker that got out all the parts of the housing act then I would of been living on the streets. There are a lot of people still on the streets my brother had 4 of them in a bed sit with black mould on the walls and ceiling and constant flooding from upstairs. Don’t just blame the money situations look at the real issue, councils don’t have temporary housing.
The biggest problem is that there is no such thing as affordable housing, the prices of flats, apartments and houses is ridiculous, especially down south, rent is also extremely high, the average rent for a one bedroom flat down south is over one thousand pounds a month, also the more people you let into the country who need housing the less social housing there will be, this is why hotels like these Travelodge’s are now being used. We have created a system where people are better off not working because those who work in average paid to low paid jobs (all of which are essential jobs, shop workers, carers, nurses etc) get no benefits and struggle to afford to live.
LOL you think they're just letting people into the country? are you insane? clearly you have no idea what really goes on, stop listening to weird ass racists.
I get it, living in a hotel is not fun but at least in the UK people are given accommodation, but here in the US people don't have that advantage, you either end up on the street or in a homeless shelter
We have tens of thousands on the street, annual death toll is 1.3 k. 4 million adults still living at home because they can't afford or find accommodation. House prices and rents ultra high, interest rate increases every month, millions of people on mortgages struggling until they will be forced out. Annual record migration annually it never ends Millions on social housing waiting list, waiting decades, haven't the money or land to build millions of extra homes. UK in severe financial debt, inflation the highest of the western world, only going to get worse until polices and World policies change drastically 8 million sick waiting for operations, people from all over the world arrive here to access our free health care and get service. One example a expectant mother from Africa arrived had her 5 babies on the NHS costing 150k,she then flew home leaving her bill unpaid. 😢
I agree. It is sad to see the UK going through a crisis. What saddens me is people like myself and many others who get taxed so much by the government and yet these money go to every angles but how does it benefit us when other people (like the example your mentioned) benefits them instead. I think all taxpayers should go on strike in fact do cash in hands job instead. It is utterly ridiculous. Even like people on benefits, so many people want council housing and benefits do not want to work, they want to live under tax payers but for how long will this go for. When I watch such documentary I do not know who to feel sorry for. At the end of the day we should all feel sorry for ourselves because everyone is going through something and the media does not document that or even increasing tax from tax payers 😢
In the U.S. individuals and families are living in economy hotels/motels. In the southern states, the hotels/motels have become the new family public housing buildings.

Yes things not any better in over 60 years at least regarding housing. I understand how things were and just look now. Things gone around in a circle back to the beginning! Mainly no real Govt planning regarding this. Expensive executive housing built that a lot can't afford.
@@royharper2003 It's not funny not having a proper place you know you can't stay in more or less permanently. The Council often only have temporary places and temporary hotel rooms while they try to get a place for people and a child doesn't want or need to be pushed from pillar to post when trying to make friends, get schooling and sometimes be far from family support. Moving the small bits of stuff you own every time is difficult and more expense. Children come with things they need for daily living. I worked with a woman who could no longer pay the rent as it went up hugely but wages were literally up pence extra per hour. She went to a temp house that was damp then one with water coming through the ceiling. It was quite a while before somewhere was found. This was going on since the 60's so no change. If you landlord wants to sell you are out looking and need a substantial deposit plus your moving costs. Can you see how bad this actually is? At least with social housing you pay then you stay. So, I interpreted this person's comment as saying she was homeless and complaining about the free housing she was getting by having to move, etc.
I didn't say that. I said it's not funny moving about from here to there albeit being given a temporary stay in this hostel...this hotel...this place not fully suitable with water dripping for now and councils are doing this. THEY have nothing to offer. People are like vagrants...no place to keep as a proper home. Are you old enough to remember Kathy Come Home a documentary made in the 60's? Horrible to watch back even then. Have we not improved anything...as it seems not. Nothing much has changed really because of no social housing built.
Many years ago I was stuck on a wait list for public housing with a newborn basically couch surfing for a year.. and had to navigate my way through awful situations due to lack of rentals... (now) i am so greatful to have my small home for myself and child. There needs to be more affordable housing built, this is heartbreaking.
Do you realise times have changed and thousands of people who are in full-time work paying their taxes are on council house waiting lists as the property they happily rented has been put up for sale or the rent has doubled, mortgage rates doubled and so get into debt and they can no longer afford to live there with no other option than a council/housing association home.
He's actually very lucky to be in a hotel room with accessibility. I was told 7 years ago by shelter that the local authority is under no legal obligation to take my disability (& lack of mobility too) into account when placing us in temporary accommodation. And if that meant a bathroom on a different floor which I couldn't access then there was nothing I could do about it and I should just be grateful for the roof over my head because in other areas some people didn't even get that. No offer of hotels then!
There needs to be a ban on Airbnb in London. I’ve seen countless videos of people renting affordable homes and then making profits from airbnb. It’s forcing families like this into homelessness. It’s so unfair. We (the government) need to do more for the people of our country!
You, the government, is the reason why Air BnB is a thing. Restricting landlords' ability to evict bad tenants in a timely manner among other things to make long-term renting no longer worth the trouble.
No, the greed of some is the reason. Many landlords are criminals and psychopaths. Exactly same reason why some start wars: for money and greed. The whole communities are destroyed so some ameba can get more profit. @@shauncameron8390

This is heartbraking and gut wrenching. What kind of society allows a disabled man to live like this. It's evident he was working. All their situations are bad
Really? , that's because we can't afford to, plus we haven't large lands like France. It's also by design so that these capitalists can charge extortionate rents and house prices 😢
Of course they are homeless. Hotels aren't apartments with landlords. They can't permanently live there. That's why they are constantly being moved to other hotels.
Why is it that the media always focuses on ‘single parents’ (99% of which are mothers)? Where are the fathers? The husbands? What are they contributing to the equation?
The fathers are probably on the streets or living in unstable situations themselves. Local authorities only support one parent (usually the mother). I'm a woman and I can honestly say that us women need to do better at vetting potential fathers for our children. Too many women have babies with unfit men knowing that if they don't support us, the council will ensure there is a roof over our heads (even if it's just a hotel). The number of times I've seen women I know have babies with men they hardly know (and who are clearly not financially responsible) but they will say, its OK, the council have to house me. Of course not every situation is like this, but in my experience working in housing/social services, its definitely a circumstance which is a common occurance.
Some single mothers are fleeing domestic violence. Some fathers are not playing their part, and nobody can or is forcing them to. It’s really not that complicated to see the tragic issues many face.
@@mee5780 I couldn’t agree more. Same thing here in the US. I feel most sorry for the children - they don’t stand a chance. And instead of just having a ‘brother’ or a ‘sister’ they have ‘half’ siblings or ‘step’ siblings. I read the obituaries and one youngish lady had 7 children who had 3 different last names; you almost need a map to figure who is who! None of the fathers were listed - they must of been out of the picture (and most likely had other children to other women). Children deserve better.

The same situation I am currently on, waiting for a home. I wish the government would tackle housing crisis and stop this. It's hard because it's messing up people lives and mental health.

Watching this made me so upset! I wish Piotr, his wife and his dog and cat, and Michaela and her three children all the best for the future and hope that they will find a permanent home soon ❤
For all the comments questioning the whereabouts of the fathers of the children. Consider that some women and children may be living in hotels, due to domestic violence. The lack of housing means no available houses for families to leave a refuge, so they continue to live in refuges, until a home becomes available. But the lack of refuge spaces can mean that desperate vulnerable families are forced to live in hotels. It's a sad situation all around.
Sometimes the fathers are pushed out also because he technically should be working and if he is taking the full brunt of hotel /hostel fees and council tax not to mention food and bills. Everything is calculated so your not enough to comfortable and secure. It’s deliberate and a set up.

Oh they sold off their low income housing. The socialism is finishing then. They don't want people playing into the system like like through lies. Find your truth to save you that's the only way.
Just think of the hundreds of billions that, instead of being used to build and maintain decent social housing, have gone into private hands (landlords and hotel owners) and ultimately disappeared into tax havens and private property. The taxpayer ends up paying multiples more all for the pleasure of a sh*tshow of compounded societal problems.

We did not get all that assistance..Our family still is dealing with physical and psychological consequences of the ordeal..not even mentioning financial one…
Why is the conclusion from your experience to criticise these people? Why not attack the system that makes people homeless rather than fighting some homeless people because they're marginally better off than some other homeless people?
Thats so sad. My family went through homelessness too for a year but our story was similar to the ones in the vid, we were given a hotel room to stay in and had money coming in and it was just a waiting game until we finally got a house. The whole experience was only made 10x worse because of my dad choosing to be irrationally angry every. single. day until we got a home. But your story is just so heartbreaking wow. I’m so sorry you’ve gone through this ordeal but please don’t punch down. You and your family deserve assistance just as well as the people in this video. The people we need to be angry with is the government not those who are struggling just like us.
I know somebody who was put in travel lodge by a housing association for 2.5 weeks, it cost over £4000. My jaw dropped, what a waste of tax payers money.
But they are under 100 a night, what's going on? Some really ineffective spending. They also institutionalise people with trauma for 3K a week but can't offer therapy which costs a fraction

I think all countries that are part of the EU, and England was part of it, will have better standards than government aid in the US or even Canada. I did think that their places looked clean and up to code. Also, the hotel offered to steam clean on of their tenant's carpets which shows they can step up if told to.
My friend works in a Travelodge and this is all absolutely true what you see. They're moved from place to place, away from work and schools and they are in a very small room with children, no cooking facilities and in some cases not even a cooked breakfast as there are no kitchens, not are they allowed to have their own cooking units ie toaster, microwave etc, so the money they have is spent on take away, eating out, which is unsustainable and extortionate. A lot of them must go hungry. Also quite often they are not rebooked for an extended stay until they day they're supposed to check out and it may be elsewhere, calls are not answered etc. It's definitely a help, but also mentally, physically and financially draining for these poor families. Also can you imagine the costs for the council!!
A roof over your head is not a home. Shelters have roofs as well. Living in motel to motel is just a roof. Eventually you will crack under the pressure of just a roof.
How & why do homeless people seem to afford pets/dogs and yet that extra money it takes to look after these animals could be saved towards your future, I just don’t get it.
We need a massive social housing building program. So no one is homeless. This is entirely achievable. This problem is directly because the Tories have not done this.
It takes ten years to build social housing. All the children who need it now will be grown by the time it is built - that is it they start formulating the proposals today.
@@garypadiham3221 What's your plan. Do nothing? There are huge challenges, which are directly the fault of this vile Tory government. We need to be on a war footing to deal with this issue. I'm sure that if the necessary will and impetus was put behind it, we could build a lot of social housing and much quicker than 10 years.
i live in a small flat (no living room) paying £950 a month. i’m now pregnant and due to the amount of stairs into the property and no lift. it’s becoming less accessible for me. i’m honestly scared how things will play out. i don’t have the means to even move my furniture. i’m sick and can’t stop working. life is hard
Australia is the same. Population growth, hereditary wealth inequality and housing as an investment strategy (Air BNB and tax incentives) are driving housing crisis at present. Add the fact that successive governments in the USA, UK and Australia have privatised public housing and this is the end result. There are crap hotels full of homeless people in almost every suburb, and all paid for by taxpayers - why the hell are we not providing proper decent long-term housing, instead of paying tax dollars to private hotels? It makes no sense.
Australian governments footing the bill for homeless to live in hotels? Yes during covid19 but not now. Only person I know of getting free hotel accommodation is an aboriginal lady, but aboriginal housing is a separate entity. My boarder has been on public housing waiting list since 1998. 25 years and no hope of getting a property for another 10 years or more
Maggie Thatcher and the Conservative successive governments are responsible for this for selling off the social housing and then failing to maintain what they we’re still responsible for. When I was in social housing when I left home for the first time it was expected that as soon as you earn enough you moved out but people earning a huge salary amount are still allowed to stay in their social housing home provided they pay the rent. Also private landlords have been allowed to get away with so much like not maintaining a decent home.
When is this going to stop? It’s happening in multiple countries worldwide. Rents increasing beyond all reason (due to real estate and landlord greed), and not enough available housing. Something has to change.
What do you mean by landlord greed? Everyone needs to survive, whether it is a tenant or a landlord or whoever really. Crisis is hitting a lot of people in the UK
All landlords are not greedy, they have expenses, taxes, etc. and never forget you RENT NOT OWN, they have right to sell property, not renew a lease, it THEIR property
@@yvonnegrant3736 if they can’t afford a property without price gouging the tenants then they need to sell it. Not make people homeless because they can’t afford the ever rising ridiculous rents and oppress them with poverty. And yes at this point the MAJORITY of landlords are just plain greedy. And just because someone owns a property, does not give them the right to do whatever they want with it without considering how that affects the tenant of which the house/unit is their HOME. Landlords will all have to face GOD one day.
Anything could have happened to the father's. Let's be honest even if they where around how much money would they need to earn in our days to afford the cost of private rent?
Where are the Fathers of these kids? That should be the First Question asked. These women made bad terrible decisions and this is the result. Only the handicapped guy should get compassion but half his money goes out the window from the dog. That’s why he will never keep anything.
Came back from India i seen poverty and children living in Slums heart breaking no money This is 5 star compare what i seen . . Lets be grateful and thankful for living in a great country
Why are you people having more kids that you can’t afford when you are relying on the government? Make it make sense, you’re purposely avoiding working which could help your future.
Does the guy who owned his house have insurance? Why was he evicted? Not getting the full story with this guy. This guy shouldn't be homeless if he had house insurance. 8:03 Congrats Mama on your new home. Well done you. So happy for you. The hotels are set up for emergency accommodation. They don't need to explain to the media why that is so. Hotel, not emergency housing. Govt that is putting homeless people into these hotels. speak with the govt rather then passing blame.
Thank you (I’m the mama at 8:03). Also, I agree that it’s a much wider issue than blaming one entity. I’m grateful we were in the hotel, as opposed to being on the street but also it’s difficult. After countless rejections (looking privately) & no responses or idea how long I’d be there for speaking seemed like the only thing that could help. Thankfully when I got assigned a case worker, she was amazing & helped me look privately. After many failed attempts, I got somewhere (private rented). Bigger change needs to happen.
@@africansisterI was doing nails (gel) and eyebrows as well as graphic design commissions whilst at the hotel. I’m currently working on my self love doll brand @kiyadolls as well as returning back to my day job part time.
@@nicoleshichioh lovely you got somewhere. It was heart breaking to see the phone call and hear you say, "they will never call me back". Great that you met someone awesome to help.
@@shauncameron8390 Circular. If one did those things then, presumably, they wouldn't be a single mom. The statement above is logically equivalent to telling someone who has already fallen off a cliff and become quadriplegic that they need to be more careful when hiking. Or someone who has already had their license revoked to be a more patient driver. It's absurd.
Where does everyone put all their possessions when they get into this situation? I've found that storing my possessions has been another HUGE problem!!
Strange to see such situation - I live in Latvia and our city council gave to my family 72 m2 flat only to hope that we will stay there and work and pay taxes - I work in private bank but my wife work in local hospital. Kids go to local elementary school and our cat take care of flat while we are busy our daily life. Our municipally also building new houses with flats but we also need more houses for people but I did not witness such situation in Latvia that people must live in hotel. Same time I would not call these people poor in this video because they have car, video games, a lot of other things, animals etc. but something is not right - look like some system failure!
I remember I was in the situation had to stay in a hotel but I had a full-time job and I was by myself and I've can't I can imagine what these mothers and families are going through you can't sleep you depending on something and that's not a way to live
Our neighbours had a rent increase of £900 per calendar month. 2 bedroom. The Landlords just increased their rent because their mortgage rates increased. It’s crazy out there in London
Yeah, this has been very common in the past year. Landlords offloading increased mortgages or property taxes unto their tenants. Also super unethical. I'd like to think that karma will come and bite those greedy pricks one day.
Just so you know, additional costs will always be passed onto the consumer (or this case tenant) in business. This won’t ever change, only market forces will dictate prices. If the landlord can’t afford the mortgage on the property it either gets sold or rent increased, if the tenants decide to pay the new rent rate, it proves that there is a market for that property at that price. The number one thing effecting rental prices is demand vastly outstripping supply caused by unprecedented immigration to the uk in the past 20 years.
@@rosiekapun207 < Also super unethical. > Not at all. It's called recouping costs. Landlords are not charities nor are they renting anything at a loss.
@@shauncameron8390 Actually there is a limit to capitalism and how much you should be able to charge. Let's this example since you're so narrow-sighted. How about gas companies started charging every motorist $500 to fill their tank? How about grocery stores started charging every customer $20 for a loaf of bread and $50 for a carton of eggs? They could claim it's to cover expenses and they should be allowed. But of course, no one can afford that. So yeah, neither companies nor landlords are entitled to raise their rent 300% from one year to the next, nor charge absurd amounts for properties which causes artificial inflation. If people can't self-regulate then it's time the government steps in and starts regulating prices because it is dumb to pay astronomical prices for things just to make those owenrs richer.
Life is not straight forward. If it were there would be no problem. We need to show compassion and at the very least avoid Judgement. People in Glass houses shouldn't throw stones
