Homeless In UK's Seaside Ghetto 🇬🇧

This is a conversation I had with Jappa, a homeless man in Torquay. I was drawn to him as I wandered the main high street in the town. The seaside Town has an acute homeless problem which has created a ghetto of sorts in the area that surrounds Factory Row. Jappa's story is one of hope and positivity in an incredibly negative situation. He tells us what life is like for him as a homeless man in Torquay and what he thinks can be done to help in the future. A truly enlightening individual. I hope this video shows people that there are some wonderful, intelligent and eloquent individuals that can indeed be found amongst homeless communities and they can be a valuable resource for society. Thank you Jappa 🙏

Hello. I can't agree with you more. That simple and short phrase is incredibly powerful. It contains much energy, truth, and strength. Even a bit of sense of humour. When I read it the first time I realised it was a bit special, but only thanks to your comment I went back and read it again. He's been incredibly super to achieve what he said in the conversation. And I know for sure that other people who are still stuck in that nightmare, will find it very special too. Anyways, cheers!

@@PorchBassvery few people fall into addiction without a prerequisite mental or physical health concerns. An addiction alone should not be barrier to help. The world is full of addicts who don't turn to crime to feed their addiction - and just because those people have an addiction does not mean they don't require support. I'm an addict. I've worked through it over a number of years to a point where I don't need my addiction to be fed daily - but I'm constantly battling a relapse into that old addiction. But if you met me - you would have no idea. I'm a pretty well off young middle class guy, work a professional job, own the roof over my head. People who show willing to work towards controlling their addiction deserve all the help they can get while they remain willing. The fact they are an addict in and of itself shouldn't be a barrier if the person is willing to make a change. We should support those people wholeheartedly.

the oldie councillors moved the college out of the town centre, and sold the land for housing, then built an out of town shopping centre. double whammy on less footfall in the town centre - especially out of season when tourists have gone. Perhaps they'll build a new adult education centre in some of the empty units around town, and offer free courses, and inspire a whole new level of hope. Some popup arts shops, and exhibition spaces. Things have moved online a lot, but if you give people a reason to go to an area, they will. It was sad to see this Summer how the upper high street area has continued to deteriorate.

Hi, thanks for this video, im 43, male from Denmark Scandinavia, i went ro Language exchange school in Torquay i 94' was such a beautiful city, but im speechless at what has happened to the town ... So many GOOD people homeless and bad people with to many houses and buildings just stand empty for tax reasons ... With the power on... While illegal immigrants gets out in flats, condos, houses, hotels all expensive paid not luxury, but its not fair that our Countrys get the homeless people housing aswell ...😢😢 Awesome interview, nice bloke, i saw a documentary with him and his son a couple a years ago, they where living father and son in a tent on the beach in the fall ... Hope him and his son is still ok and good vibes between them🤞🍀

What a beautiful inspirational man. I would love to meet Jappa, he sounds like a really interesting man to talk to. Sadly too many people are left homeless through no fault of their own. I live in a seaside town where there are many homeless people and the company both my Son and Daughter work for sponsors a local soup kitchen/homeless shelter. Every year I knit 40-50 hats and pairs of gloves for the charity to hand out in the winter to people who need them. I'm disabled and can't work but thankfully I can still knit. I wish I could do more but at least I can bring colour and warmth to people who need it. Thank you for putting out this video Wendall. x x x

Jappa seems to know what he wants. He said himself he's been homeless for 25 years, so this is obviously a choice rather than a necessity. We all love our technology but like Jappa says, we need a reset. People don't talk much anymore, I make time to talk to people when I'm out and about and always make time for homeless people. Even a conversation with a person can help them feel like they matter to the world; like we all do. I hope you gave him a 'donation' Wendall............

I moved to Toronto from London 36 years ago and it hurts me to see the great people of the U.K. hurting so bad. I'm not sure whether ANY of the politicians can see beyond the end of their well-heeled noses to acknowledge the problems they have created. Seems like accountability went out the window a long time ago. Christopher Priest wrote a book in the 1970's called "Fugue for a Darkening Island", a brilliant view of a dystopian future U.K. His vision is starting to look depressingly prescient after watching some of your vlogs, but I admire your search for the truth, on the streets and in the hearts and minds of people.

What a great positive attitude this guy has. It takes courage and determination to see the good in life, and by doing good and thinking good thoughts we can change the world for the better in our own way. I was street homeless in Torquay/Paignton when it snowed last 2017/ early 2018. Couple of homeless died in that weather. Crazy how quick your life can change and you end up being one of the people you always asked your parents why they were sat there. Id just turned 20 when I got made homeless, one minute I was doing my apprenticeship with Airbus UK, made a young lads mistake and lost the apprenticeship, moved down to devon with my mum, never got along with her anyway and ended up being made homeless not knowing a soul in the area, shit was rough, 2018 was not a fun year for me. 😅

Jappa is great. You can tell that he is genuine. Jappa is the real deal. I wish for him that the government could give him a small studio or a small flat of his own but the thing is maybe he prefers sleeping in the woods. I'd say he is about my age that is soon to be 59 years old and at this age I mean it's not safe for him sleeping in the woods and when winter comes and with all the smack heads on the streets. yeah, he is a really nice bloke and not an addict of any kind so give this man a small safe place to call his own. Maybe he can still sleep in the woods sometimes during the summer but yeah I wish someone would offer this kind man a place of his own.
