Santa Monica, CA - September 17, 2023 - In a troubling incident that unfolded at Santa Monica Chess Park on Sunday, September 17, 2023, a homeless individual created a substantial mess by littering a large quantity of trash and a shopping cart. The situation escalated to the point where Santa Monica sanitation workers were compelled to involve local law enforcement to address the issue.
According to eyewitnesses and accounts from the scene, the homeless man's actions led to growing frustration among nearby residents and parkgoers. Santa Monica Sanitation workers, who routinely maintain the park's cleanliness, swiftly decided to contact the police to seek assistance in clearing the debris and restoring order.
Responding promptly to the distress call, Santa Monica police officers arrived at the park to address the situation. However, upon observing the approaching officers, the homeless individual hastily departed from the scene, leaving behind the accumulating trash. The law enforcement response was met without incident, and no citations were issued during the encounter.
This incident marks the culmination of a recurring issue, as noted by a frustrated resident who wished to remain anonymous. The resident revealed that the homeless individual had been a persistent presence at the park for the past three days, consistently leaving behind substantial messes and disregarding the park's cleanliness.
Santa Monica Sanitation workers took charge of the cleanup operation, promptly disposing of the accumulated trash and securing the abandoned shopping cart. The cart was returned to the sanitation yard, where it awaits retrieval by the rightful owner.
Efforts to address homelessness and related issues remain a complex challenge for communities across the nation. Local authorities and organizations continue to work towards finding effective solutions to provide support and shelter to those in need while also maintaining the cleanliness and safety of public spaces.
As the situation at Santa Monica Chess Park underscores the ongoing challenges faced by both residents and authorities, it serves as a reminder of the broader issues surrounding homelessness and the need for comprehensive, community-driven solutions.

Thank you!! That's exactly what I was going to put in the comments and saw yours 1st. The city SHOULD make them clean their crap up! They wanna bitch that "no one wants to feed them, clothe them, home them, support them", and whatever else! Make these homeless Jerusalem clean up their hoard of trash EVERY DAMN DAY!! That mayor or governor should demand this be done and get it taken care of! He or she (yes, I only gave 2 options) need to stand up be a REAL Governor and or Mayor and GET SHIT DONE! Too many areas of America is looking worse than some 3rd world countries! It's embarrassing!

Do you throw your trash on the ground for somebody else to clean up? I don’t. Why place blame on anything or anyone other than the individual who did this. How about we do something about the homeless who are overloading city resources and budgets. I’m not at all in favor of defunding police. However, when your police department is one of the highest paid in the state and they aren’t allowed to, or refuse to enforce the law, get rid of them and hire more people to clean up after the homeless who spread feces, urine and trash on the streets where I walk. Another problem is that almost 100% of our police force live in another city. Therefore, there is no investment in the community that they service. I guarantee you if this was going on in the streets where these officers live, they would do something about it. Stop paying them so much and instead, give them a place to live in the city in which they provide service. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but our city is dying. Businesses are leaving and those who pay the highest of taxes are leaving. We are facing a deficit because those who work in city hall are mismanaging our resources. In 2022 our police budget was 98 million dollars. Get rid of our police and fire departments and contract with the county for both police and fire services. With the Los Angeles county sheriff and fire, we will get services our tiny city could never pay for on its own and we would get it for a much cheaper price. The only reason city hall doesn’t want to do that is that it relinquishes their power. Did you know Santa Monica was a non smoking city? It’s an infraction to smoke anywhere in the city of Santa Monica, but people do and nobody does anything about it. Again, if our police aren’t going to write citations and generate revenue for the city as well as keep cigarettes off the ground and out of the ocean, then get rid of them. Or change the law. The community here needs to educate themselves on what’s happening here in this once great city. There is a RU-vid video titled “from the mountains to the sea” I employ everyone who lives in Santa Monica to watch it. Think what things were like when we had respect for each other. We had pride in our work. Our children had a mother and father in the home thus having an example of what it was to be a good American. Our civilization is in danger of collapse unless we all do something about it. I’m 52 years old and almost retired. I served my community. If not the community I lived in, then the community in where I was assigned. As a generation X, we will be the last generation to know what I was like to live in the best world unless something drastically changes. Good luck

Come on! STOP titling it “DISARRAY”. Majority of the ‘homeless’ leave their area in DISARRAY. I just took pictures of it today. Many ‘homeless’ people don’t give a SHYT on how they leave their spaces.

I just wanted to make a new comment as my first comment I got a strange reply anyway it’s a real shame the homeless keeps leaving there own mess for others to clean up after them no responsibility what’s so ever it’s a shame in California this problem keeps going on a repeated cycle.

Disappointed tourist experience. Only a daily visit can show that it's Not getting better, once they found out you would clean it they quit even looking for a bin. Create some chained link detention cells at Colorado Center Park and start locking them up for their misdeeds . It's so simple the simple minded Santa Monica government can't figure it out. Even on their own website they BROWBEAT the tourist to Keep Santa Monica Clean.
