Homeless Man Sleeping Rough in London since He Was 17

Keith has been homeless sleeping rough in or around London since he was 17. He just turned 53.
A local homeless service provider was able to get Keith housing, but the landlord wanted more than the housing benefit would pay. All six people living in the house got evicted.
Once the sun starts setting and shops begin to close in Central London, the doorways become home to rough sleepers. The amount of homeless people sleeping outside is alarming.
The affordable housing crisis is not just an American problem. The cost of housing is skyrocketing in the United Kingdom, Canada, and many other countries.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Hey Mark went and helped feed the homeless today. I really enjoyed it. There were a few greedy people that could care less about others but most people were awesome. It was a great experience. So sad what this world has become. Most of us are one disaster away from homelessness. What a corrupt world.

I couldnt fathom living in Vegas. It markets itself as the "Sin City" and its in the middle of nowhere, with Area 51 not too far too its north. Most of Nevada is completely desolate desert. People should wisen up and get the heck out of there, but I understand many cant, they are stationed where they are at through necessity or whatever it may be. So I pray.

Future, I agree. Once I called in behalf of one homeless person, the lady on a phone was rude to me. Couldn't even speak to her. Where I live there are not even shelters and if there are homeless people do not want to stay because it's dangerous. I have spoken to one homeless man who has a mental health problem, he said there is NO help, not enough. Sorry for your struggles. I think the neediest people are ignored and not treated with respect. Shame on the society. I also heard that there is a lot of enviousness amongst charities, and I was told not to help because if you are from a different city and you help, they won't be happy. It happened to a few people. Very, very strange, indeed.

Hello Mark! You're an amazing soul. This story, among many others is sad. I don't have a better way of sharing so I'm doing it in a comment. Last night I was leaving a Mexican restaurant in northwest Arkansas. It was about 9 p.m. I got 20 ft down the road. I lit an after dinner smoke. A voice called out to me: "Hey, you got another smoke?" I jumped into the busy street, because it was dark and the voice was unexpected. It was a beautiful young lady resting inside of a sleeping bag on the side of a busy street. I immediately said 'Yes I do'. I gave her a smoke and asked if I could sit and chat. She kindly said yes and patted out a patch of grass for me to sit next to her. I modestly, mentioned RU-vid and the work that you do. She was very enthused and happy to hear about your cause. Unfortunately, she declined to be filmed. I asked her permission politely and put my phone away immediately when she said no thanks. Non the less, we had a chat. She told me why she was out here and how she got there. It was heartbreaking to hear but I could tell that she wanted someone to know. I just wanted to say thank you for everything that you do. You've inspired me to do anything I can with what little I may have. You are amazing to say the least. I gave her 3 extra smokes, a lighter, and enough money for a meal. I wanted to do more, and that's what is heartbreaking, I just couldn't. I hope I helped her or gave her encouragement as you have done for me. You're a perfect example of "paying it forward". Again, thank you.

Same here in Germany. Homelessness skyrocketed to 750.000 to 1 Million people in 2018, this includes child's and teenagers (but without the so-called refugees). Even more and more people with jobs get homeless, especially in bigger citys like Munich. But Germany is much more f*cked up than any other European country: the highest price for electricity, for rent AND the wages doesn't go up for the last 20 years and t are oday at the same level as 1998! In all citys it is totally "normal" now to see poor old people are searching for empty bottles in the public bins (=0.25EUR), the most of them worked her hole life.

This just breaks my heart. The worldwide epidemic of so many people homeless. Because of the greed of landlords and an acute shortage of affordable housing. It's like the agencies just refer and shuffle the people in need of benefits from one place to another. Filling out endless paperwork. Without getting any real results in lots of cases due again in part to a lack of affordable housing. I think the United Nations should make solving this worldwide problem a top priority. I truly wonder when the countries around the world are going to FINALLY WAKE UP. Beginning to Show Respect while concentrating on pooling their resources to truly address this shameful situtation. Why do people raise such a stink over animals? Who certainly deserve love and care also. But leave their fellow men, women and children out of doors. In all kinds of weather, unsafe and unsanitary conditions, without out blinking an eye. While eating well, sleeping warm, and unconcerned at night. It reminds of how the devil can harden peoples heart. Everyone is supposed to do unto others as they would have others do unto them. Thanks for taking your time and energy to bring awareness to this urgent situation. Not only traveling around America also to foreign countries. You are truly a worldwide advocate for the homeless. You give these poor displaced souls hope. Just in the fact that you have spent years advocating, representing, caring and giving a voice to the homeless. Have a safe trip. You are a true hero! @@flowerchild6954 Yes it's truly a disgrace how human beings treat each other. This life is not about how many "toys" a person can get. The only way to truly win the game is to treat others well. As we ourselves would want to be treated. Because the only Prize is Jesus. The only thing a person can win of true value is their soul. Because we can't take anything with us. When God calls us except our soul. Through the Salvation Jesus Christ offers. We can have the assurance of Heaven. I truthfully feel like all the other situations are just a test. I learned a long time ago. That there is true Joy and Fulfillment in giving to others. Jesus washed the disciples feet. So people are not supposed to turn a blind eye to the suffering of their fellow man. This world is just a test to see what's really in a persons heart. Which determines their future in the next world.

This channel pops up on my feed all the time. I watched one video, out of curiosity, and the algorithm has locked this guys videos into my feed ever since. Some of the videos are not too hard to watch. One I viewed, recorded from seven years ago with a guy named Keith, wasn't too bad for me to watch. The guy looked totally content to be out on the streets of Hollywood as long as he could stay high on opioids. He confessed to getting tons of good sleep (from being high), so it made the experience seem tolerable. I know the way opioids make you feel, and when under the influence you have no stress in the world. I'm not advocating for that lifestyle by any means, due to the dangers of being under such a substance, but it dulls the pain of life. There have been some other pretty rough ones to watch, that have sent me spiraling into depression because the experience looked so grueling and hard to escape out of. The harsh reality is this can happen to anybody, and it looks awfully hard to escape, especially due to the volatility of the economy. I have tried to stop watching these, for my own mental sanity, but I keep coming back.

What has happened to our world that we ignore these people that need help so badly? It must be horrible to see no help in sight except for minimal groups that try but cannot do it all. NO ONE seems to care and the number of homeless grow daily across the world! There can be a solution. At this point the only way to start fixing this is by government's help at all levels. The problem is now massive. The problem is not going away. How long do they think they can blatantly ignore this?

Solveable maybe, for the guy down on his luck who lost a job, yes there is hope and other jobs for the people willing to work, although there is no doubt housing is expensive there are ways to survive whether you stay with family or have roommates to help with the costs.But more importantly you have to be willing to work!!!!!!!!! To think that the members of parliament in my home country England get a second house allowance so they can be closer to London city for work commitments, plus on top of that they have numerous benefits including daily living expenses for food, and they also have expenses for home decor and the like, one member of parliament even got the taxpayer to pay for the upkeep of his moat surrounding his private residence. These bigwigs in The city have been bleeding the taxpayer dry for centuries in this country, the royal family also take the absolute biscuit when it comes to the financial burden of the taxpayer to pay for their private helicopter trips up and down the country and the royal weddings when they decide to get hitched......I would like to see that revenue spent on the destitute, the homeless and the sick.......fed up of the complete hypocrisy played out in our country.....did you know that the poorest of society in this beautiful country of ours are made to pay a bedroom tax if they have an empty bedroom in there home.........people are using food banks just to survive, does anyone know how many empty rooms and bedrooms the royal family have and all the palaces and estates that could be opened up to the poorest in this country but know we just pay for the upkeep of these palaces.....meanwhile the poorest go hungry, the sick, homeless and destitute are left to rot and mostly forgotten about. Things have to change. Ps hope this guy can get some help soon. So sad in this day and age.

In the bible God said if you judge someone God will judge you for same way. My friend who was homeless for 10 years has a job now. He works his butt off. I think he gave up because life makes it so hard to come up. Your either poor or rich in America. All these flithy rich companies don't want to help the poor they rather slave us than help us. I'm not judging just would love him to keep fighting and not give up. I am food stamps and I have a job. Struggle is so real though. I stay working on slave ship and don't get enough. I can't even feed myself. I wish I could help but I can't. #THISISAMERICA

Invisible People The "middle-classes" can afford to get drunk and they're in a position where they have a support network and something to fall back on. But if they keep up with it, they might become addicted and lose their jobs, friends and family and become homeless. A lot (not all, but a lot) of homeless people here become and stay homeless because they're migrants, have a mental illness or they abuse drugs or alcohol. A house and a job could enable and exacerbate their addiction. What should be tackled first is the root cause of their homelessness so that they don't find themselves homeless again after they are housed. And you can't help the people who are unwilling to help themselves. Did you ask the guy why he came to London and how he became homeless? Did you ask him what he's doing himself to get off the streets and out of poverty? If he was homeless for 36 years, I can't but think that the system didn't fail him but himself. He became used to this way of living. I might be wrong though...
@InvisiblePeople
@InvisiblePeople 6 лет назад
It's not that I don't agree with what you wrote. My point is the public sees a homeless person and just assumes they are drinking or using drugs. 38% of homeless people were dependent on alcohol and 26% abused other drugs. Alcohol abuse is more common in older generations, while drug abuse is more common in homeless youth and young adults. Most homeless people are sober and the percentage of alcohol and drug use is only slightly higher than the public.

I’ve had shitty jobs in the past when I was unable to pay my rent, but housing benefit paid the rest. Or you get on the housing list list and eventually (some months or possibly years after you get a permanent home paid for by the taxpayers if you’re not working). Sorry but there no way a uk citizen can be involuntarily homeless for this many years. This is not America. There are social policies in place in the uk.

Ananda D'Aquino you're right. (I'm from UK.) I think when we hear another accent, it intrigues us. It can give a false image of sophistication or achievement. Think about James Varney on Fox News or Piers Morgan for Americans. If we were to travel or interact with people from different places, the mystique would somewhat dissipate.
