@@maryhodgson8604 I posted a similar thing. In England she would be in a residential home for elderly people or people with dementia or some such establishment paid for by the NHS, whether she has any money or not. People do knock the NHS but it is a great thing for people who have no health insurance. People also think that the NHS in the UK is the only option, it is not, you can always go to private hospitals as an option, paid for on a health plan just like America. The NHS is a great thing it will help anyone who walks through the doors, you even get people from the US coming here on holiday and just so hapen to be pregnant at the time and have a child, (coincidence? I don't think so) and they don't even get a bill. The NHS will help everyone and anyone.

Evelyn is the only interview that I’ve watched multiple times. I’m fascinated by what she says. On the first listening, it just sounds like the ramblings of a crazy person, but to me, it’s almost like a combination of old memories, mixed with dreams, mixed with lyrics or poems she’s heard, mixed with her own thoughts and opinions. I think everything she says is a combination of truth and metaphors.

Highly educated woman--- mentions the poet T.S.Eliott and taking French in college. And she is, also, a pop-culture music expert. I consider her a surrealist--- showing us the absurdity of our modern world through her own unique free-form poetry. God bless her. Frederico Garcia Lorca would have enjoyed talking to her, I think. Perhaps her spiral downward was triggered by the death of her child? She said " when my son and I died in each other's arms." I know , God forbid, if my child was hurt or sick and died in my arms, I would feel I had died, too, at the same time. There are some things that you can't recover from---- without an extraordinary amount of help.

@Slowly's Models I'm so glad u said that. Unfortunately I've probably been one of those people that have just kept on walking when I would hear a woman like this just rambling on not even giving her the time of day which is sad & I am definitely not proud of it but thank God for people like Mark. He gives these poor people who basically feel invisible & forgotten about in life & u sit down with them & give them a chance to tell their story. And Mark just let's them get it all out with no judgment. If only their were more people like him in this effed up world. I hope u know Mark, if u ever read this what a wonderful person u are & what a wonderful thing u are doing not only for these people u are interviewing but u are educating so many people including myself who are subscribers of your channel. I always knew there were & are homeless people in this world & people on drugs but your channel really opened my eyes to how bad things really are. I would always look at these horrible things happening in other countries & say to myself how can this happen? How can the government let these poor people live like this. This is horrible, so sad & disturbingly disgusting. But the most disturbing part is that this is going on RIGHT HERE IN OUR COUNTRY! This is heartbreaking. I absolutely love ur work Mark & I thank u from the bottom of my heart for helping these people, giving them a voice & also for giving them money for the interview which I'm sure helps them alot even though some will say there just going to spend it on more drugs or alcohol but u know what... its one less car they will have to get into to make that $ to get that fix & u never know that could of been the last car they would ever get into & never come out of. U never know! & I'm sure u do alot of other amazing things for them that u choose not to share & I just want to let u know u have so many people around the world who love & respect what u do & I really hope u know what a godsend u really are. It's normal human reaction to avoid abnormal behavior, it's a biological caution and self preservation. I had a friend that tried to help someone on the street that had passed out, he was talking to the guy, got him somewhat lucid, offered help and lent him a help a hand up. The guy got up and hit my friend. It wasn't much of a punch. A cop was driving by, stopped and intervened. The cop was cool all around, called a social services team who took over. The cop told my friend that its dangerous to intervene on a personal level. I know it sounds harsh, but this level of homelessness, drug use and mental distress is beyond the scope of the average person providing aid. Sad and complex all around. Take care.

If you have ever spent time with someone with severe dementia, you'll hear her story. I can say with almost absolutely certainty that each rambling sentence jumping to the next topic, is her brain firing off different memories of her life. It's such a shame no-one knows her and her life well enough to connect the dots. Bless her, she's still there, just very clouded thoughts.

Listening to Evelyn's extremely entertaining albeit disjointed stream of consciousness, between her hits off the crack pipe, reminded me of the neurobiology readings of Oliver Sacks. He wrote the brilliant book, "The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" which recounts the stories of patients afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations. Dr. Sacks was called the "nobel laureate" of medicine as he was fascinated by people's ability to replace cognitive deficits and other neurobiological damage done to the brain with a creative ability to imagine stories and music as a substitute. The normal area of the brain dominated by visual processing is replaced with auditory which allows for creative storytelling, an ability to remember music instead of actual personal memories and other incredible grafting of the brain's circuitry. There are poets that would be enchanted by Evelyn's poetic use of language and evocative imagery. It's almost like there was a muse lying deep inside Evelyn that allows average people a glimpse into the creative potential of humans beyond that of rote language. Just fascinating and definitely drawing way outside the lines that society wants people to operate within.

That's not how it is at all. Others can't help you if you can't help yourself. There can be all the opportunities to change your life for the better, but if someone like her never takes the first step, then it doesn't really matter. I battled opioid addiction for 7 years. I got chance after chance whether it be rehab or probation, and I kept going back to drugs until the punishment was steep enough, and my low was low enough that I never wanted to feel that way again. @mariebernier3076
@mariebernier3076 4 года назад
@@erich1380 There are varying degrees of care, IDK what her illness is. For example, some schizophrenics are on a cycle where they take meds daily, do well with minimal psych appts, then after they feel well for a period, they think they don't need the meds, stop taking them and can end up at risk of harming themselves or others. Police get involved, take them back to an institution and the cycle starts again of getting them stabilized. Many people need more and better answers, not just more lock-ins, but more nuanced, flexible, different care. We don't have enough $$ in the system so we stay in this preventable, barbaric cycle. I merely meant that she is too vulnerable in this state to protect herself on her own, or to make appropriate decisions about her own care. If the catalyst for this is drugs and it can be improved by being clean, she would still need to have some type of supportive housing, etc. most likely. As it is, people here are saying it's worse than her last interview, so it's prob. progressing.

To read her obituary about how talented she was and how she brought so much joy to her family - it's so sad that it ended this way for her. She is in a better place now and reunited with her mother. RIP Evelyn!

@drswaqqinscheckingin7210 4 года назад
@@NennaLena That's just reducing the entire issue too much. You need to understand that these people aren't addicted or homeless because it's what they want. They're using substances in order to cope with the trauma they've acquired through their lives. For them there is NO other way to deal with the pain they feel. Please have some compassion and empathy, remember that it could happen to anyone; the ONLY reason you're not in their shoes is because you were handed a better hand of cards. If we want to emulate a system of recovery and harm reduction that actually works and has significantly better results than the US or other western countries we only need to look at the way the netherlands handled their opiate epidemic. In amsterdam they actually PROVIDE medical grade heroin to addicts and users with the caveat that they must use the substance INSIDE their monitoring facility staffed with medical professionals who can provide care if they need it. The numbers do NOT lie, a huge number of people who come to the safe injection site eventually seek treatment that is offered to them, 1 in 4 individuals completely stop their use once they start treatment and a large number of users become functional tax paying citizens who can hold down a job and afford a place to live. Remember that even if you want all addicts in prison, it's cheaper to give someone treatment indefinitley, than it is to imprison them.

I could listen to her tell stories all day! Her brain is so interesting how it puts these things together. I know its chaos, but I had a best friend in high school have a terrible accident. She had to learn to walk, talk, and live again. She used to talk in mixed up sentences. She knew what she wanted to say and and if you knew her well enough you could sort of piece the puzzle together. Its sad in a sense but in another sense it seems so creative and interesting. I would have LOVED to have met her like 20 years or so ago. What a unique lady. Such a gentle soul. 💜
