"Kid Prisons" is what Jacob calls the foster homes he lived in. Jacob is 21 now, and has been homeless ever since he aged out of foster care. Just imagine it's your 18th birthday and that is the day you are kicked out into the streets with only the clothes on your back. Well, according to California Progress Report, 65% of youth in foster care emancipate without a place to live. 40% of persons living in homeless shelters are former foster children. A similarly disproportionate percentage of the nation's prison population is comprised of former foster youth. Less than 3% go to college and 51% are unemployed.
I met Jacob in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jacob is a smart young man, yet he says he was never taught the life skills needed to step into adulthood.
We will never end homelessness until we fix our broken foster care system.
This Invisible People road trip is made possible by Sevenly and Virgin Mobile USA, who are partnering to end youth homelessness through Virgin Mobile USA's initiative, RE*Generation. For more information please click here. invppl.tv/regen

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I took in a homeless child at the age of 13 years he kept running away from the foster care system, telling me that he was mistreated. His caseworker knew he was with me and kept taking him away from us. He kept running away, always back to us. Until the caseworker finally told me that I was not going to get a dollar for having him with us, by this time he was sixteen. I told her I never saw a dime from anyone to cover for his expenses. I always provided the little that we had for him because we loved him. Don’t need the money just leave us alone. Andrew is now 24 years old and no bad habits. Truly amazing kid! We love him!!!

I would hope you wouldnt throw your child out like a piece of trash at 12 01 am on their 18th bday like this and never see or speak or help them again in any way , so why is it right or acceptable to do it to youths that turn 18 yrs old in the foster "CARE" system ?

As an ex foster youth, this truly hits home. At 18 I was told see ya later and I had no idea how to function in this world. I’m 28 years old now and I still struggle everyday, still no one teaches me how to survive besides myself. I literally have to google and RU-vid how to survive in this world. It’s hard, but if you hold on and make good choices you can do something incredible with your life

Hey T, I feel for you. I'm 61 and was kicked out at 15. I had to learn and do everything on my own, just like you. I'm almost retired now and I'm here to tell you that you will make it. Hang in there. YOu will find joy in life and you will survive. But you will always struggle, you will always feel the pain of the abuse, you will always feel sad and depressed. I won't lie to you. It never goes away. Just know that you're not alone and make the best of what you have. Be good to people and don't pass the abuse on. That's what I do. I have a great wife and two wonderful, successful daughters and I never show them the pain that I have inside. The buck stops with me. That's my legacy. Do the same.

I've been homeless before. It's not easy. There *are* steps to get out of it tho. 1) gym membership/cell phone. Acquire it. No matter what. You aren't getting a job if you smell like shit and can't return a phone call. 2) a job. Acquire it. No matter what. If you have to lie about your address, just fucking do it. They won't know you don't live at 1234 Bullshit Street. 3) Save, save, save. Only buy the essentials. If you smoke, stop. If you do drugs, stop. Think food, transportation, clothes, cell, gym. That's it. If you want to not be homeless you are going to need money for first months rent and a deposit. That's like minimum $1,000. If you want to have a decent car $5k. 4) Never give up. There is going to be speed bumps. LOTS of speed bumps. Set backs. Push through that shit. Put your blinders on and keep going. It took me 4.5 months to fully unfuck my life.

I hit rock bottom about 6 years ago. After a layoff and failing to find meaningful work, I ended up living in my car with less than $100. After moving out into my car, the following day I went into Walmart and applied to be an overnight stocker, and drove to my community college where I enrolled and applied for financial aid. After a month of sleeping in my car I was able to find a room for $400/mo and the following spring classes began and I got the federal Pell grant and student loans. I was able to put myself back together. I worked 4 nights a week -- Thurs to Mon -- and attended school full time the rest of the week. Now I'm at a very exclusive research university and about to receive two degrees. It can be done. Albeit, I was blessed with gifts some people don't have.

I got a relatively bad roll, but I cheated and out-strategized this malicious f7ckh0l3 of a society. I'm rich. By all means, I shouldn't be, but I figured out how to game the system. 100% legal and 100% life-changing. I wield my gifts like a weapon against a society I am at war with forever. The group homes taught me that there is no mercy, so don't ever lose. Kick them while they're down. Bring a sledgehammer to a fist fight. Tilt the pinball machine. Cheat, lie and steal, because they will ALWAYS do the same back to you. And if you're ever lucky enough to find anyone that gives a sh7t about you, do the exact opposite to them. That's why I am convinced that within this century and probably until 2050 there will be huge huge catastrophies in our society. Because society is fu...up and politicians are 99% corrupt. Randy R It seems like no matter what decision a parent of a child makes, the decision is always looked at as wrong. I grew up thinking that if an adult choose not to abort a child, and then put them up for adoption, that they would have a better chance at life if the parent knew they couldn't care for the child or was unprepared. I've been exposed to at least 2 people that were adopted in their lifetime that are doing so well. It saddens me that the alternatives, such as foster homes, don't do much at all for the children. I know that doesn't pertain with all foster homes. The ones that don't care for the children shouldn't be allowed to function if they are just there to take money from them. =(

The foster system is disgusting. When I was a teenager/young man I worked at a coffee shop. One of our regular customers was a woman who, for lack of better description, was a professional foster parent. We used to call her "the baby farmer." She would always have several foster kids at a time, for which the state would pay her. She also had several biological kids of her own. She used to treat her real kids very favorably by comparison to her foster kids when she'd bring them into my coffee shop--often buying hot cocos and stuff for her own kids, while telling the foster kids to be quiet. It was revolting.

Fostering has always been profitable in most locations I've been, certainly not in all. Sometimes you "only" get some kind of child benefit instead of the proper "foster salary". Frankly 2 kids in the UK would land a pro-foster at least 30K pounds annually free money, which is above the average salary. It's tremendous incentive to farm kids instead of adopting them, and when the foster parent wants to adopt they'll have to give up this very sweet salary. Anyway, I don't think the average forster farmer treats the guest kids as Cinderellas lol.

Elena Arman-Tang, don't blame foster care for the absolute failure of the American family. This is why I hate so-called, progressive social policies because they always work to weaken the family under the guise of "modern relationships & freedom" or some other such names. Everyone who is alive has family which includes extended family. The govt. does a pity poor job of placing kids. Soulless bureaucrats don't care kids are just case files, names & numbers in the family courts But its bad, irresponsible parenting that creates foster care tragedies.

It takes a lot of perseverance but it can be done. 3 years ago, I went through the same thing. I fell hard but you gotta get up. Best of luck guy. Keep fighting and pushing forward. Lastly, do not be afraid to ask for help. A lot of social service agencies will help former foster youth get on your feet but you gotta take the initiative and fight for yourself. Nobody will fight for you. They will fight next to you, but they won’t fight 4 you. It may seem hopeless at times, but you need to keep going and eventually it gets better.

Feeling a necessity to communicate with a man I trust who loves me. But I didn't. And the feeling of hopelessness in that situation is insurmountable. I'm thankful to have the most amazing mother. But going back to the skating analogy, it's like only having one skate. Understanding how to use two. Maybe even getting a used one at some point (a non-biological parental figure), but never having the same advantages as those who have two. Of their own. Obviously some parents are shitty people and whatnot. I went thru the foster care system, I’m now 21 and have maybe 3 life skills. I still can’t tell time and was told I can’t be helped anymore and to go figure it out on my own. If you weren’t ever taught anything it’s extremely hard to learn at 18, 19, even 20 years old everything you were supposed to be taught so much sooner

What he said about not having a dollar to his name and still being able to have a good time and enjoy life with others is profoundly powerful (say it louder for the people in the back)! Also about giving his last wish away. This is a human with a pure soul who deserves much better, and most people in modern society should consider his words

The foster care system is a joke! We have so many young people here in NYC who age out of the system who are homeless or in shelters. The shelters here are dangerous, overcrowded and only allow you to sleep there overnight.

Cameron Cropper foster care was never meant to take the place of a real, caring family. It was only a socialist pipe dream. The state is a terrible parent but socialist liberals can't grasp this easy truth.

I would disagree that 'rich people can't understand a poor person's plight'. I was once homeless. Shit happens, people are selfish and won't make room for you in their house, despite it being 20F outside, etc. and even the smartest of us can become homeless when left unsupported. I donate to ASPCAs, foodbanks and homeless shelters, because without these, things would be so much worse.
@Bollibompa
@Bollibompa 6 лет назад
Do you speak for the entirety of the denomination 'rich people' or are you just one person? Because one example does not negate a statement. I bow my head to your commitment, truly! Still, the poetic undertone of privilege is not to be misunderstood.

I can relate to this young man alot, I didn't know how to tell time until I was 10 years old! Life skills need to be taught in school just like math, English (history class is useless since its sanitized anyway). It should be taught at age 14 along with learning finance, getting a job. This is an old video. It's too bad he could not have made his way to Seattle were they have resources for youth. He is grown up now so I hope he is doing better.

Agreed.Shocking to hear he coulden't tell time til he was 17,but I'm not judging i understand.If you don't have anyone to take you under their wing & teach you simple life skills how will one survive in any environment not just homelessness.Truley sad.How could he be in foster care for his entire life & they couldn't teach him a thing?That's tragic.
@lynnbaker2336

The odds are so agianst foster kids. Just because you are 18 does not automatically make you an adult. I was thrown out into the world at 18, totally unprepared to. Make my way in the world. While i may have been 18, maturity wise, i was actually closer to 12 to 15.
