​@@soulbakinmany times however, it's more than just a compressor rebuild or replacement. If a car has not had AC for let's say 4 years or more, all the o-rings tend to dry up. The hard part is getting to some of your air dryer parts that are inside the dashboard, that require o-ring replacement. Dashes crack, break up, lose fasteners that you can't get anymore and you name it. This isn't always, but more than enough. That can be thousands of dollars.

+Myanameis Beestingz. Oh. I later dismantled my first attempt. Why? The bucket was freezing cold to the touch but the air coming out was just so-so at first. So I fully lined the bucket. I put tall Styrofoam strips between the two buckets. The strips were glued (Gorilla Glue) and stacked vertically. Then forced the smaller bucket inside. Super tight fit. This change made the air coming out colder than the first attempt. A liner would probably have been easier to work with. And probably more efficient. My strips are glued to the inside of bucket not glued to each other. Using Styrofoam I had on hand as a makeshift liner was more convenient than driving around searching for a liner. And my A/C cooler cost only my time.

@@AndreBellCopywriter Doubt you'll see this since it's been 6 years, but good for you for being resourceful and using what you had on hand. It does take a bit of effort to find out what retailers have what you're looking for.

They have similar liner at hardware store on insulation aisle. It’s in a roll. Rolled up. Then you cut to size. You could also put a smaller form inside and fill the gap with expand foam

Crock pot with the handles cut off and spray foam in between the bucket andthe pot, possibly use smaller diameter pipes with a 90 degree bend and a siphon to reach the bottom of the container, a small rack for the jug of ice to sit on above the pipe inlets...this would force the air down and around the jug and up the pipes thus giving you even colder air, you could compensate more outlets due to the smaller diameter. This would also increase it's overall area of coverage as well... Just a thought.

That’s not how RU-vid works? Cool ideas are what get people attracted. It’s summer so fans or cooling stuff are what people are probably going to be searching for. Combine that with the interesting thumbnail, and many people are going to click it. Clicks for vets? That seems rather condescending. Other people can get clicks for things. Veterans will just have to sit out the whole “air conditioner bucket” section I guess.

Ryan could this be more efficient if it was adapted to an insulated cooler instead of a bucket? I am wonder because finding good fit with a bucket and liner is not easy, bucket has no insulation and cannot regulate the interior temperature as well.

where did you getbthe right size fan?

The fan size is actually optional. After HD recommended a Lasko fan (saying they were frequently bought together--meaning others are buying the liners and fan on HD's website) I bought the same one on Amazon for cheaper. However, I don't use it. I found that I have a stronger desk fan (Honeywell Turbo Oscillating desk fan) that works better.

@@biohoo22 It's a situational thing, my guy. It's good for temporary use on a small scale like one room while an AC unit can do the whole house. The savings is very helpful for poor folks who cannot afford to cool the whole house so one room would do until they get funds.

Knucklehead, not possible adding salt will make it colder unless the salt is colder than the ice. In fact, since the salt will be warmer than the ice when added, it will make it hotter until the salt is brought down to the temperature of the ice. Maybe you should take thermodynamics 101 before commenting on something you know nothing about..

Tina Leanne not true. Adding salt will actually increase the breakdown of the ice thus ice will melt faster. This is the same reason salt is sprayed on the roads while snowing. When a big clunk of ice is breaking down, two things happen. First, ice will melt faster which actually just means it has to come to an equilibrium to its surrounding temperature. The coldness (the absence of heat) will decrease by bringing the outside heat. During this process, cold air (via forced convection of the fan) will be exposed through the holes of the bucket. In turn, cold air for the individual. Second, while breaking down of the ice by the salt, pockets of holes will be created in the block of ice. These pockets will expose more surface area for the air to travel through which also helps releasing cold air from the holes of the bucket. The faster that ice melts, the cooler that air from bucket holes will be. Another way you can have cool air is just by breaking that ice down. Having smaller pieces of ice will also give you cooler air as well. Similarly, slower that ice melts, the air temperature from the bucket holes will be similar to outside air temp. The principal is that ice will melt inevitably; how do you want to do it? Faster melting means cooler air. Slower melting means less cooled air for longer period of time. And that is the actual thermodynamics principle. Stop belittling others!

@@tinaleanne556 Dude they use rock salt to make the ice or certain things colder. They use Rock salt in big factorys to make ice cream faster, along with bars, and anything else you may need to get colder. Yes, adding rock salt would make it colder. Rock Salt is better than your regular salt.

I just happen to have all those things and tools that would be thrown out at a construction site. They make small plug in fans you don't need solar and you would probably have a fan on anyway I might paint it but can't improve on it. I like!

Carmelyne Thompson No. Making ice in a freezer is an innefficient way to cool your home. The freezer just pumps that heat back into your living space giving you no net gain in cooling power. An efficient A/C pumps the excess heat as well as moisture to the outside.

That is called an "earth tube" - a passive cooling device used in sustainable Architecture. If you have a hillside behind your home, you can build the intake uphill (they look like an upside down J coming out of the ground when finished) and let the earth tube run down slope into the house, terminating at a water feature with a decorative spray fountain. The inlet is screened to prevent insects and such from entering, but allows for free air flow. The air in the tube cools, becomes more dense, and falls down slope which makes suction and draws in air from outside, cooling as it goes, eventually to reach to house and water feature, where it picks up a little moisture (aids in sensible cooling) and cools the interior. The process works best if there is a hot air "chimney" in the house where the heat collects and exits the house. Irrigating the soil over and around the earth tube increases the cooling. FYI, I'm an Architect.

chvydrptop As long as the Earth Tube liner was sealed properly. Steel pipe is commonly used for larger Earth Tubes, and Pipe sections are welded prior to burying, which is, for all intensive purposes, impervious to Radon Infiltration.

When it's 30C/90F inside, 42C/105F outside (like here in Melbourne AU today) and a fan just blows stupid hot air at you, I don't think it would really matter that much if there's no overall net gain of cool air in the house as long as your precious micro-climate around your bed is cool, especially if the fridge is on the other side of the house :)

If the ice maker was outside this would be more practical. But you still have the high electricity cost of making the ice. Keep in mind any refrigerator or freezer or ice maker is essentially the same thing as an air conditioner. An AC unit simply puts the hot coil outside. Best to get a window air conditioner.

Putting 1 gallon of room temperature water into a fridge freezer will take a lot of energy to cool and then freeze. 1 gallon water = 3.78 kg, cooling 3.78 kg from 68 F to 32 F requires 316 joules, which isn't much. HOWEVER, phase changes require energy than just cooling. To freeze 3.78 kg of water will require removing 126,000 J of energy at 100% efficiency and fridges are NOT 100% efficient. Also, fridges do not run 24/7. Fridges are like water heaters, they turn on when they need to. Meaning that warming the freezer will keep your fridge running A LOT more than it should. This "set-up" would most likely not save you any money, especially with a solar panel. Those are extremely expensive and their return-on-investment takes years. Source: Engineer

Randy Parsons Correct about the ac unit, with the coil outside to be efficient. An ice-maker has to work extra hard when its hotter outside, than it is inside, but it does give a net gain in cooling. Also, the ice-maker cooling costs are to the store's bulk cooling, then there is transfer cost to the customer. Buying ice from a store is inefficient but probably cheaper, depending on how long you would leave ice in your own fridge (I have no idea how quickly this cost would catch up to store bought ice).

An ac would typically cool your whole house, to get enough of these to cool your whole house, assuming your freezer is in your garage, would use the same amount of energy as an ac unit. Matthew Davenport Running cost would not be close. This is designed to cool a single room, so the equivalent would be a window unit. A window unit costs about $1.50 a day to run. The amount of energy it would cost to freeze a gallon of water would run you about 2 cents. Although an AC is way more efficient at cooling, this is a nice little budget way to keep cool.
