A while ago i purchased a egg incubator and it really didn't work very well. i knew i could make something much much better for a very small cost (about £50) The capacity is about 25-30 eggs and i could add another tray driven off the same motor.

I sort of made a very similar design at a larger scale for my beer fermentation cellar. It’s a large sealed box with the temp control system mounted to the side. I always regretted not making the overall chamber just a touch bigger to allow the control system to fit with the overall size of the box, instead of being a smaller box on the side that sort of sticks out. Absolutely loved the hinge concept though. Brilliant.

Excellent craftsmanship, but... The important thing in incubators is the percentage of hatching. The shape is important, but not the most important as the percentage of hatching. There are many basic technical factors that you did not consider (fatal errors) such as ventilation, thermal dynamic stability, etc... Though the most important thing is that you incubate and publish the results. Thanks for the excellent effort.

Brilliant, be nice to see how you get on with incubating eggs. If it’s a good success rate you could make and sell these. Controlling the humidity and having a consistent heat is hard. Be good if you could top up the water without opening it, to help temperature and humidity fluctuations. Wood work is top notch.

very nice project - my only concern, coming from a wood furniture design background, would be the cabinet will twisting and distorting over time (esp the door and draws) due to the heat and humidity - it can happen to wood furniture due to bad design naturally even without the help of the heat and water that you have built inside the incubator
@KrisHarbour
@KrisHarbour 4 года назад
Yeah wood is always a problem with things like this but i did do a few things to help it not move to much. First the wood was not very dry, about 18% so there wont be a to drastic change due to the humidity. Its a very stable hardwood That does not tend to move very much. My wood i made with the same wood was over 20% moister and is now down to 6% and you cant tell anything has changed, no cracking and no warping. I also added the laminated plywood to the top so the window cutout does not crack as the end grain in the middle is exposed. It could of course move a lot but im sure eventually i will get it to some kind of equilibrium

Beautiful workmanship Kris. I also liked the new format where you had more time lapse footage during the work, slowing down for the start and end so we understand what you're doing and how it turned out. I also liked in the beginning where you added a voice-over, so if you included more of that going forward, I think that would work well. It should DEFINITELY help you focus on what your'e doing to not have to worry about narrating at the same time, although it will add editing time. ;) Thanks for sharing!

So I'd go with number 2 for the lighting. You have certainly done that wood proud! Such beautiful wood does not deserve to be "hacked" together. Several already mentioned spreading epoxy with you fingers, so I won't! One other thing. I had been using push sticks for years, no problems; Until I did! This past April the stick caught the blade just right and slammed it into the palm of my hand. Hurt like the dickens. Its now been nearly 3 months and its still a bit tender and feels "wierd" when I flex my hand.

I use to raise EMU . They take 59 days to hatch and in n.c. you have to remove humidity from the air too much for them. No matter how bad you want to help a bird hatch, DO NOT! Theirs nothing sadder than the bird tearing the umbilical cord and dying in your hands! Theirs a reason it won't hatch. I have helped several , most all didn't end well, a few did but...I had a contract in Oklahoma, I was air mailing baby emu from n.c. to o.k. overnight with no problems.i have also raised about everything that flies crawls or hops. I paid 600 us for my incubator and I use to joke around that I could hatch a rock Very nice high quality work sir!
