Homemade Custom Truck Camper

This is a quickish video giving a look at my custom truck camper that I designed and made myself, with help from some with the heavy things and help with planning of the technical things. I had been toying with the idea of building a camper before I got my new truck and after looking at what I could buy both new and used I couldn't find anything that really fit my needs. The ones that came close were also not cheap close to 30K. So, I foolishly decided to build my own. It was a fun process, frustrating at times but very rewarding. Through the process I decided to splurge more on quality windows, and over engineered the electrical for possible future upgrades (AC). We also got a nice mattress along with custom cushions made by VstarButtons. I used wood because it is readily available and easy to work with and didn't require special tools I didn't already have. I looked at how commercial campers are made with similar materials and also watched videos of other people's campers they made themselves and mish mashed all the things that I learned together to come up with my own creation. One person in particular that gave me a lot of inspiration on techniques, especially the exterior choice I made was Dave‪@EndgameCampers‬ . He has made many truck campers that all really unique. Hope you enjoy.

That bunk set-up is genius - I've wanted something like that for when my kids come with - but don't want it tying up extra space, I've thought about folding them up before, but removing it and using as a back rest is awesome - well done!

Thank you kindly. I did. Spend some time thinking and planning. I built every piece of lumber on SketchUp to figure out exactly how everything would fit in it. Took about a month and a half to render it. Then I made blueprints from it. Still changed on the fly while I was building it when things changed.

A cool idea for steps to get in may be to slide them under the camper. Put a little hatch access in the middle, between your framing, and you could slide them in and out. It would keep them stored out of the way.

Well, that is right on track with mine. I started at 84" wide but am now at 88" and a ceiling height of 6'6" I was planning an E/W double bed over the cab but am now going with an E/W queen. What dimension of lumber did you use for framing, and what thickness of plywood did you use on the various parts? Did you nail, staple, glue the skin on? Any problems with the seams shrinking and leaving a void? I plan to start mine in a couple weeks if I can get the materials. Thanks again for the reply
@kilewesterman2339
@kilewesterman2339 10 месяцев назад
Queen size is nice, double would have saved some weight though, but hard to beat the comfort when it's me and the wife. I ripped 2x2 and 2x4 out of 2x8 lumber to ensure straightness and thickness. I used 1/8 faux wood paneling on the inside (nailed/stapled) and construction adhesive. The framing I used pocket screws and glue. I built the walls with the inside paneling then erected them and used construction adhesive and screws to join the corners. I used 1/4 birch plywood on exterior after wiring and insulation. I used construction adhesive and screws for that as well. I wished I would have used less screws and for the exterior and used large staples. The many... many.... many screws (over 1,000) I used required a bunch of bondo work to level out the divot the screws created, but it helps ensure seams will likely not shrink enough to cause failure (that's the hope). The seams were also bondoed. Don't throw the option of filon fiberglass as a viable option for skinning. Good luck and enjoy the process. Despite some frustrations I really enjoyed undertaking a project of this magnitude.

Kile, Thanks again for the information. I want to make the camper as light as possible but strong at the same time. I have looked into filon as well and it looks easy enough to apply but I am afraid of the delamination bubbles forming over time. If the pros can't make it stay glued with thousands of pounds of pressure I doubt I can either! I am considering the staple route as they leave a small hole and it is nearly impossible to pull them out. I will continue learning more about the build process and hope to get started.

Two questions. 1. What did you use for four corner "lifts" to load/unload. 2. How did you secure this into your truck bed? Did you use turnbuckles to the OEM bed hold down points or something else?

I love it and it's very well thought out. I kind of would like to build one. Not including labor, was there quite a savings over buying a factory made camper? I had a couple back when they were reasonably priced, but I can't justify spending what they want for them these days. I know you probably have a lot into things like the solar and cooler fridge, etc. I'm just kind of wondering what a guy could build a shell for? Could you give a ballpark figure on that, please?
@kilewesterman2339
@kilewesterman2339 6 месяцев назад
to buy a new one with similar features probably would have been 20k give or take. Probably more when you take into account all the electrical components I have in mine. So, subtracting electrical and subtracting the custom cushions and other upgrades it would have cost around 8k or less.

Thanks, 2 x 2 and 2 x 4s all ripped from 2x10s to ensure squareness. 1/4 birch plywood for plywood. it weights 2000 lbs. look at the camper weight sticker in the clove box for what your truck can handle. I know my previous 1500 was around 700lb. look at Endgame channel for some light camper builds.

Great Job! Amazing bunk stow-away! Doing research for my own 1/2 ton build. Questions for you, how has the tuck bed coating handled the wood expansion on the corners? Can you share the brand you used? Did you ratchet strap to the frame or the bed holddowns? Any idea on what it weighs? Thanks for sharing!
@kilewesterman2339
@kilewesterman2339 11 месяцев назад
Thanks, the way I framed it and used a bunch I mean a bunch of screws along with a lot of construction adhesive and finishing it off with bondo, plus plywood typically has less expansion contraction than solid wood. So no signs of failure so far. And I don't expect there to be, but time will tell. My fall back if the corners do fail to add trim like a normal camper. I used durabak 18 marine liner. It is tied down with truck camper turn buckles to the bed tie downs. There are access codes in the tub part of the camper. Capri campers is where I got that idea from. This one would be a bit heavy for a 1/2 ton. It weighs 2000 lbs. Look up endgame campers. He has built some really lite campers. Good luck.
