A fantastic build. Very heavy duty and strong. If I was building it, the only thing that I would have done, is to use blue Loctite on all the threads

they will. Servos may have less NM but still they are way stronger because you can overcurrent them by 300% for a short time also the torque curve is way better than for example steppers

What is the motivation for the 1inch plate, especially on z? It all looks cool, and if it's just that's what you wanted, then cool, but I don't see how a 1" plate on Z adds anything other than mass that has to be accelerated and such and just make everything work harder. But it looks impressive. Looking forward to the next video.
@DUIofPhysics
@DUIofPhysics 5 лет назад
Rigidity and mass dampening. The more mass you have, the lower the resonant frequency of the installation, therefore you will get less chatter usually.

@Jaye Mathisen... That was what I was thinking... The 25mm rails seem a little overkill too.
@Renaldo015
@Renaldo015 3 года назад
Using a servo motor in small sized build like this is even more overkill. But then again we all want servos in our build so good for him.

Amazing , I was curious about your gantry side plates. how thick are they? looks pretty rigid and sturdy. Im thinking about upgrading my CNC to something of that thickness. Right now my sides are 1 inch thick aluminum rectangle tube. which makes my machine very light. I need something a little bit more stronger heavy. I think what you have is perfect. Your videos are awesome.

Man, this thing looks gorgeous. Really nice work! Also, those servos make me drool. I couldn't afford to get those but I was tempted. =) I'm sure the nema 23 will be no problem. I have nema 23 steppers (elongated for extra torque) and they seem to work just fine. Of course, I haven't actually tested my build yet! 1" thick aluminum is insane. That must have cost you a pretty penny! This Z axis is gonna be awesome. For the Y axis, do you only have one linear rail per side? I guess I'll go watch your other video to find out. Love the build so far - and your custom PC stuff is pretty sweet too.

Nice work man. I been looking into 80/20 to build my own myself. Looking forward to it once I have more expendable income. Have you noticed any lack of strength/torque from just having 1 ball screw for the Y axis?
@radikult-custom
@radikult-custom 6 лет назад
Savant PCs not with the Servo motors, they have a lot of power and torques that can make the whole cnc shake aggressively if I put full power

Out of curiosity, how are you tramming your Z axis to your bed? Does the spindle clamp have enough play in the bolt holes to twist it side to side? I am presuming you shim it for the Y position? I am looking at building my own CNC router and I am just looking at how this is done.
@radikult-custom
@radikult-custom 5 лет назад
Thepriest39 yes the the spindle holder has a bit of play on the screw holes in order to tilt it from side to side. And for the back and forward I have about 3 pieces of aluminum foil. But first I try to make sure that the gantry is as square as it can. That makes tramming a lot easier

What is the workable Z of this design ? Looks like about 400mm perhaps. You mention that you will be doing aluminum and plexi was it. Not so much wood :-)
@radikult-custom
@radikult-custom 6 лет назад
Yes I mostly cut plexy and other plastics and some aluminium not to much wood, the Z axis has only a travel of 140mm and the table of 635 x 635 mm
@chrisleech1565
@chrisleech1565 6 лет назад
Ahh , well you cannot determine the scale very well, the actual usable is 635 x 635?? Long day at work, what I meant was of course 200mm for the Z :-)
@chrisleech1565
@chrisleech1565 6 лет назад
Long day at work, I meant to guess high at 200 of course. I don't imagine there are many DIY or turnkey manufactured tables with Z axis of 400 (16") :O I was trying to look at the reservoirs on Ebay and nothing having to do with any Ebay URL is working and this since 1130 am today. Now it is nearly 800pm Weird

Superb work again man. In the process of making my own! One question, is it necessary to use solid alloy blocks for the gantry sides and Z axis? Could I just use extrusion for that also, provided everything is aligned and rigid?
@radikult-custom
@radikult-custom 6 лет назад
Kane Jaeger oh yes, by all means this is not the only way to build cnc's, plus if you don't have the tools to cut aluminium plate then yes extrusion are easier I even think I went a bit to far with those big aluminium extrusion, I could of build it out of 2x2 inches and maybe 2x4 extrusions and 3/4 thick aluminium and save some money too hahaha
