Homemade Electric Buggy - Crosskart - Go Kart range test update: • Homemade Electric Bugg...
Hi folks. In this video I'm going to show you how I built my own electric buggy from start to finish, and how it drives. I set up chapters in the video so you can skip to the drive footage if you've already watched the build series. If you haven't seen the series yet, I linked to each episode below so you can check them out if you want more details. There's 10 episodes altogether, not including videos of the tools that I had to make along the way, so I had to leave a lot of things out of this video.
So, what can this machine do? Technically it's a crosskart, or at least inspired by crosskarts. It's a bit higher than most karts but a bit lower than most off road buggies. It only has rear wheel drive, so it's obviously not an extreme 4x4 or rock crawler. I wanted something to rip around my own private dirt track with, but isn't completely useless on the trails either. A universal play machine.
In terms of power, the motor is rated for 6000 rpm, can deliver 24 kW continuous and 55 kWp (72 hp), and 99 ft-lbs of max low end torque at a system voltage of 102V nominal. With the 22" Wanda tires and 5:1 gearing that I'm using, that translates to around 500 ft-lbs at the wheels and a top speed up to 120 km/h. For perspective, a Polaris RZR 900 buggy engine provides up to 88 hp and 60 ft-lb of torque, and has a top speed of around 100 km/h. In terms of powertrain performance, they're comparable.
I haven't tested the range of the battery yet, but will soon. A rough guess based on what we can see in the video, it should provide at least 100 km per charge with non-stop highway driving using constant power, although that's not what it's built for. On the trail I should get around 150-200 km per charge with the regen function operating more frequently (more braking = more charging). Similar to the 200 km range that the RZR 900 offers with it's fuel tank cap. Driving hard on a track, I'm assuming around 80 km/charge. Enough for a 40-80 lap race and more than enough for time trials.

It looks like the Ackerman geometry is backwards in some clips, but I promise that's just an illusion caused by the wide angle mode that I'm using in the GoPro. Check out the suspension video on my channel for a clearer view of the steering geometry - I'm using close to 100% Ackerman. Update: the range test video is here >> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GmdRuX4Ji1A.html

I wasn't looking for this video, but I pulled an induction motor out of a dryer a while ago, and I've been itching to build something around it. I had all sorts of ideas rolling around in my head about the practical application of the project, and I settled for something road drivable but also offroad capable. I knew it had to have double wishbone suspension, but I was at a loss about how to lay it out. This video has been a very welcome inspiration. I'm saving it in a dedicated playlist for future reference.

So say in reality you use 80% down to 20% for battery life you get 166km of range depending on how much you flog it in the dirt with constant on/off power application. That's a great outcome! IMHO, while you have nailed the looks 5000% it needs some form of gearing, cause the torque seems lacking or atleast.. underwhelming on low rpms.. But besides that, it is just GREAT!
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar Год назад
Between the drive and driven sprockets and the final drive gearing in the differential, it already has gearing. 5:1, converting 99 ft-lb from the motor shaft to 500 ft lbs at the wheel. I can change it to whatever I see fit. 3:1, 8:1, 20:1. Just have to change a sprocket. What you're not taking into account is the power that I'm NOT using. Refer to the BMS app in the left corner of the video. I'm only pulling 245 A at 100V at the most = 24.5 kW. It can deliver 600A. I'm not even using half throttle, so if it seems sluggish, that's why. When you're testing a custom vehicle for the first time, it's usually best not to pin it to the floor and aim to kill it right out of the gate, especially not on public roads or trails. Gotta ease your way into it otherwise you won't collect as much information about how it performs other than how it died, or how you killed someone in the process. If you're referring to using a multispeed transmission, then no. That would be dead weight that just lowers efficiency. Transmissions are for ICE's because they lack low end torque. Comparatively, electric motors do not. It's all in the coil wiring. They produce max torque >100 rpm, by nature. An ICE doesn't reach max torque until at least 3000 rpm up to 10000, depending on the make/model. Multi-speed transmissions are a hinderance more than a benefit to ev's, that's why you won't find anything other than a single speed gearbox with forward and reverse in any of them. Tried, tested, and true.

I'd like to see it too, because this is completely my design and I haven't published the plans yet. Took roughly 6 months in CAD prior to the year long build, and it changed 3 times during the process, all documented on my FB and blog. You can check out the evolution there. What I started with, which looked goofy af imo, and how I got to this point. There is no other electric crosskart like it, diy or otherwise. From what I've searched there's only one and it's manufactured for kids. Looks like it too. Tiny little thing, about half the wheelbase of mine. Does mine look like a typical crosskart? Yes, as do most karts. F1 cars resemble other F1 cars, super trucks look like other super trucks, etc. But mine is substantially wider than most in order to fit that 14 kWh bank around me, and that's part of what should make it an obviously unique and somewhat challenging design compared to others. But you're free to download the plans when they're available or take some screenshots from the video, scale them out and overlay onto the buggy you think I copied to prove me wrong. If just two pieces of tubing or any other two components match up in any way, I'll pay you $100. Let us know how you make out.

It's so beautiful and has some kick! I been looking around on eBay and Facebook market for a used go-kart to convert to electric but never seem to find one that looks cool. You're custom made one blows pretty much anything I've ever seen out the market.

James!!! You beautiful genius you! I loved every minute of this video. It was a welcome recap. Big kudos on the fluid and well delivered narration as-well. Now that it is drive-able, do you consider it finished, or are there some add-ons/modifications that you intend to make?

Thanks! I eat every bit of dirt and water the front wheels kick up so fenders are on the top of the accessory list. Some folks suggested a wing on the back to complete the crosskart look, others suggest using the back as a rack for a spare tire. Not sure which I'm going to do yet. A wing doesn't produce much downforce until around 80-100 km/h, so I need a good track to drive fast on and justify it (in the works). But >80km/h exceeds the speed rating for the atv tires that I'm using (part of the reason why I'm only using half throttle on the main road in the video and keeping it

@@JamesBiggar Fenders to divert puddle givings and other debris are certainly useful add-ons. So far as what to do with the un-used cargo space on the aft area, it really depends on what you are after. For me I wouldn't bother with a wing unless I knew the project was purpose built to perform in that kind of environment. A spare tire if even a tool kit would certainly be more useful in a time of need. You said you are building a track? We talking go fast and turn left (the dirt version) or something more rally inspired?

Wow, that's an awesome buggy! I want one! It looks very professionally built. The ride height seems more set up for track than off road, but I'm sure that can be adjusted. I'll bet it would be a blast on a paved track with slicks as well. Kudos!

Loved your series, watched with my 6 years old that thinks you are a god :) Absolutely awesome build, the whole series is detailed and precise. My take: add some sound proof on the bigger panels to add some flex dampening too - it will cut the rattling and second hence this is off-road a bigger 3/6 teeth sprocket on the engine will add some extra umpf and faster acceleration. Love your stuff, what will you build next?

Thanks! A lightweight electric mid-drive enduro bike is next. I'm working on another big project atm to give this buggy a proper place to call home - it doesn't really fit with the electric theme of the channel but I'll probably post a build video when it's done too.

There are man shit videos and then there are God tier videos. THIS video highlights a God among men. He just casually builds what he needs and talks shop like we are his peers. No my guy, you are a genius and I'm taking notes with a crayon. I need to step my game up.

I'm full of envy! the good one!, I wish I could make things like this by my self. I couldn't avoid to notice you strugling with that steering wheel design... I believe you have 2 options: A) Going back to design/functional basics with a regular round one, or B) Make the steering rack movement ratio bigger, that would allow you to turn more with less travel. Cheers from Argentina
