I suppose there is one circuit for up and one circuit for down, so you can use two different "sensors" to open the circuits when it bottoms/tops out? Trying to figure out the basics before buying anything. Thinking about using a garage door opener with a fixed length, if I can find one powerful enough.

The great thing about that lift is it's simplicity, bugger all to go wrong lol. Also no dam computers to cause problems. A bit of adjustment and lubing should keep it going, better than carrying heavy stuff up the stairs :-D

Hi Moe. Was just telling the GF about all your creative original talents after you left a comment on...and then you posted this. When I built the house in 2007 put the kitchen and living room on the second floor. We talked many times about building what you have there. Many good ideas there. Thank you for sharing this info. So neat to see your place. Makes me miss my lake house. Built a boat lift there. Used a Leach company worm drive barn cleaner gear box (I was told but maybe even for a winch?) Found that a a tractor salvage yard. Never knew Leach co was into such but had big letters on the covers. Made similar cable drums like your setup. Got a smile about the brisket. Jackie always have relation bring one up when they come from Texas to Wis. She immediately asked where you were from! She likes doing them too. Had a get together last summer in the shed. Invite friends. Fun time, good food. Thanks again for showing this helpful video!

What do you think about the cable being flexed one way by the pulley and then the opposite way by the winding mechanism on two of the four lines?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 года назад
That's a very interesting thought. I've seen winch lines run cables through smaller pulley snatch blocks and never really have any issues. After repeated used though the cable can get stressed to the point is wants to stay in a tight coil and no longer move freely in the opposite direction. In this case I would think it would simply twist 180 degrees and roll the way it wanted to over the pulley. This takes a lot of force though and doubt were getting anywhere close to that with this setup. This cable is resilient stuff and it only ever seams to fail if it gets cut by rubbing on a sharp edge.

I know its kind of late but I just found this video. Great documentation. Ive been planning to use a boat lift mechanism on my own build and its good to see someone else has already done it. BTW the motor pulley has been changed out from the original size. Looks like they at least doubled it to make the elevator go faster. That will have (halved?) reduced the rated capacity on the plate but should still be way over capable of any load that you may likely put on it. Any comments on how it has held up over the years from when you first published this video?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 2 года назад
Last year it was rebuilt with steel. The lifting mechanism was kept the same. The wood beams had warped over the years (10ish)

Kind of a unique set up, that's for sure. The whole winch assembly doesn't look capable of supporting the weight of a human being. It also needs a lot of lubrication by the sound of things.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 2 года назад
The whole thing looked kind of sketchy. The winch mechanism is supposed to be able to pick up a boat and is the same unit that was actually out on the boat dock. Off the top of my head I think the unit was rated for 1,500 lb but I don't recall.

Large elevator counterweights I believe only match the weight of the empty car. For such a small elevator like this a counter weight would be a hindrance. It probably weighs in at 75lbs vs a 1000lb elevator car in a building.
