I am a 65 year old latina. Eldest of 10. You know I've made tortillas ally life but when I saw your video it brought back a memory I had totally forgotten about. My father making us kids tortillas when our parents divorced. Such a good memory. As kids we are them with butter & grape jelly. Sundays chorizo. I think I'll call my dad today. Thanks
Brother, I’m 63 years old and you brought back childhood memories of mine also, my grandmother was from Chihuahua close to Parral, and she would have all the grandkids making tortillas de harina in the morning and I remember not being able to wait to put butter on her freshly made tortillas. I came across your channel a few months back am really impressed by your work and recipes, keep them coming they are appreciated not to mention delicious.
This is THE END OF MY QUEST for the PERFECT TORTILLA! These tortillas have it all! Soft! Light! Fluffy! Bendable! Hold up with generous amounts of juicy salsa. So many recipes I’ve tried are too heavy, not fluffy, or they fall apart when you add juicy meats and salsas. THIS IS A “TRUE” TEXAS STYLE TORTILLA! Thank you so much for this recipe!
Joe, My Mother died in 2017. I’ve since been on a Tortilla quest to find, Tortilla’s just like Mom used to make! Well, just did! I made and followed this recipe (lard). Delicious and just like my Mother used to make!!!!!! So glad I found you! Thanks! 🌺 6/8/2023
I finally did it thank u so much for ur recipes for homemade tortillas. I have been trying most of my adult life. These are thick, fluffy and so soft just like my aunt Sally and grandma Juanita made. I wish I could share my video of the finished product
This is approximately the same recipe that my mother used. So many recipes do not use that pinch of baking powder, which is the key ingredient to making pillowy & airy tortillas. The other recipes have that look of not being fully cooked and feel rubbery. Thank you for providing the measurements I have always struggled because my mother never measured and I always make them by feel and sometimes it is hit and miss😃
i remember when i was a kid helping my mom make tortillas by hand eating fresh tortillas with butter and a little salt~! talk about some good eating~ i make 'em now myself but i have a stand mixer now, it makes life so much easier
Childhood memories alright! My mom always made tortillas for us and after watching your tutorial I remembered she ALSO baked them on the cast iron skillet as her comal!!! We really were poor and I only saw butter at my friends house so we used margerine- I think it tasted fine as a kid. God bless you Joe!!
Thank you Jason! The reason we only tuck one side is so the food doesn't fall out the bottom and onto your nice white shirt. 😁 Thanks for watching buddy.
I subbed because of the pickled onions, but then saw this home made tortillas video. Gonna give it a try and see if I can finally get the technique down. Thanks for the motivation.
Love your instruction on making flour tortillas. My question is which all purpose flour brand is best to use. My mom used LA Pina but they don't make it anymore , any suggestions thank you so much
Joe, Thanks for continuing to put out the great videos. Learn something every time and who the hell doesn't love a fresh home made tortilla? Keep up the great work and thanks again!
There aren't too many things that are better than a freshly made tortilla! I always make them with lard, but I really should give them a try with butter sometime. Great video and your tortillas looked fantastic, Joe!
Hi Joe. Your hands really know what they’re doing, ‘cause they’ve done it more than once. Like the edit where you smashed the bowl down. I could do this. Well done..haha.
Well it looks like I ain't gonna be buying Tortillas anymore . This is a similar recipe what we use in Trinidad to make some we call Sada Roti . Thanks for sharing my brother. Cheers!
Those tortillas turned out great , But have you ever used a press? I just bought one but now I’m wondering if I wasted my money. I haven’t tried it yet. Love you channel.
Despite the way my belly looks I (and my wife) can't eat a dozen tortillas in a sitting. I made these the other day and they were fantastic but do you have any suggestions for storage? I used saran wrap in the fridge and they still seemed to dry out? A quick 15 seconds in the microwave softened them up again but wondering if there is a better way.
I am glad you axed that question. I am wondering the same thing. I love to make breakfast burritos but the store bought tortillas are way to stiff for me to enjoy them. FWIW, I'm going to do what you're doing to keep them useable for the work week. Thank you for posting how YOU do it!
Hey Jason! I use a tortilla warmer as I am making them and then they go right in a gallon ziplock bag. Then nuke them as you said. Been working okay for me. I hope this helps!
Ziplock bag in the fridge. Then reheat on the skillet like when you come them or just microwave them. Just don't overcook them the first time around and they should be almost as good reheated.
The way he slapped that bowl on the countertop is the way I slap a fresh Torn Tia on my stomach. I call these "Torn Tia's" because my aunts always made a fresh batch for my uncles after a night of good loving.
Great job Joe. BUT, I felt the back of your head get smacked for sneaking that warm Tortilla out of Grandma's warmer. Then I seen her smile at you as she sneaked you a couple more, already buttered maybe with some chocolate on it also. Thanks for the recipe I will be trying it out.
lol that's so true I am from Austin TX ....mine would come out like horses lol and every animal you can think of!! ,,,lol do not understand why just animal's lol ...thank you... now I can make a circle lol
I know thats right I remember when my grandmother used to make him too she made him real fluffy grab a stick of butter and run it over that hot tortilla right when it comes off the skillet now that's good Eating
Always use salt when making bread whether it’s tortillas, biscuits, or loaf breads. I’m fighting a lupus flare right now, with more pain than I can fight at the moment, so please forgive me. Look up the chemical reason bread needs salt. Any link will just about explain the reason as to why. I can tell you from experience that bread of any kind doesn’t taste right without salt. Pasta noodles, pizza dough, loaf bread, tortillas, etc… even bagels need salt.
I weigh the total dough first. Tare (zero out scale) the weight of a plastic container or lid the dough will fit on, so your scale shows 0. Then I weigh the dough in a container or on a plastic lid. Divide total weight by 12 and that gives me the weight for each dough ball to make each tortilla. If I want larger tortillas I may divide the total weight by 8. No scale? Eye balling it is the next best thing.
I am sorry, but I followed your recipe along you on youtube....mined turned out hard, didn’t rise....I don't know what went wrong....I went back to my old recipe....
I loved this so much. I have been trying to search for an educational video like yours that breaks down the stuff in this RU-vid vid! 🥼Your tip for sure is similar to the content of Doctor Ethan.
