This year we are fencing in a new garden area to keep deer and rabbits out. However, with prices as they are I didn't want to purchase a bunch of lumber - especially not when we have so much naturally available! Today I'll show you how I gathered our posts from the woods and what we are doing to treat them so that they will last a little bit longer.

Those will work just fine!! Were you using just leftover latex paint for those or something else specifically? I've used ash a few times up North and they weren't as dead as I thought apparently..sent up a ton of suckers after a few seasons. Great video as always! Cheers!

I think they will! Hopefully I can get my next video on this out soon so you can see the progress I've made. A while back I gave friends and family the opportunity to get rid of any spare paint they had laying around. I was looking for interior latex paint so I could use it on fruit trees, but some exterior found it's way over as well so I used that for this project. I ended up primarily using ash for these posts, but a few elm made the cut as well. And yes, I've found that as well! The borers don't seem to get down into the root systems much so for at least a few years they tend to send out a lot of suckers. I've got one with a sucker that is completely healthy and probably 20 feet tall, but other than that we only have 2-3 year old saplings at the largest. I'm hoping the saplings can survive long enough to be good fence posts haha! Thanks for tuning in!

Good stuff! Gonna be putting in a fence for our garden this year, and this helps a lot. We have a lot of cedar on the property and will probably use that as much as possible. Thanks for the video!

go to the quick lube and get you some used oil and paint em up pretty good last for years and years i go along every three or four years and dump about 2 quarts of oil on ground round the post ..latex paint just peels off when sitting in water like your post ..oil wont peel and the bugs wont eat em ..

How are they doing now?

They are still doing great! There are a few that I have expected since the beginning won't last as long as others, but even they are still holding up just fine!

Do you get morel mushrooms near the ash trees in the woods?

Unfortunately, we have never found any morels on our property. At our last house, they popped up right in our backyard after we took down a crabapple tree and burned the stump!

Thanks! I'm located in central Indiana. As I recall I primarily used ash trees, but there were also a couple of elm, cherry, and hackberry.
