Homemade Lumber From Sawmill // Detailed Cut Plan For Log To Lumber // Woodland Mills HM130 Max
In this video, Greg mills the last beam for the sawmill cover. He takes you step by step, from log to beam. He also shares his thought process on how he decides what lumber he can get from the log, besides just the beam - a detailed cut plan for log to lumber.
Here are the total board feet calculations of this douglas fir log :
8"x8"x19'=101
3"x6"x19'=28.5
1"x3"x19'=4.75
8"x2"x19'=25x2 pieces=50
10"x2"x19'=32
Total = 216 board feet

Thank you for taking the time to show viewers just how you determine to make the lumber cuts. In most cases one end of the log is wider than the other and some logs are banana shaped. Having a good knowledge of math really helps you to make the right cuts getting the most out of the logs.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. My favorite part of milling is figuring out the cuts and how to maximize the yield. It doesn't always work out, but when it does, it's very rewarding.
