In this video, I mix my own paint, completely from scratch. Most of the products are from my kitchen. 😁 BUT, did it turn out? 🤔

MILK PAINT RECIPE:
1/2 gallon skim milk
1 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup hydrated lime
color pigment
3 cups Plaster of Paris
-Mix 1/2 gallon skim milk and 1 cup white distilled vinegar in a bowl.
-Let sit for 2 hours or more. (I let mine sit overnight)
-Pour the mixture into a cheesecloth lined strainer. Rinse a bit with water. As it is straining, pour a half cup of hydrated lime (I used pickling lime) into the bowl.
-Gently squeeze out some of the liquid from the milk mixture. Put the mixture back into the bowl, with the lime, and mix thoroughly.
-Add color pigment.
Here is the link to some color pigment from Amazon: amzn.to/3k5KQIr
The other option is getting paint formula at your hardware store.
Mix this thoroughly.
-Add 3 cups Plaster of Paris. amzn.to/3yWXQ9I
-Mix until smooth. You can use a beater to get rid of any lumps
-Store in an airtight container!

I must admit I was skeptical at the beginning but you proved me wrong, once again. Loved when your son came and hugged you … you’ve raised such sweet boys Mary.

I have an old cook book of my grandma Combes’s, it was a farm bureau one. It had all these recipes for common things toothpaste, hand cream, those kind of things. I am going to write your recipe on there with your name. What a fun video!

I love how your piece turned out but more than that, I love how you followed up at the end to share your mistakes and experiences with us! Not many youtubers do that, Mary, and it helps us to keep an eye out for pitfalls when we are making products like milk paint at home. So appreciated that you did that!

I loved the partially stripped look of the drawers that you stained over. It gave it the most interesting character. Would never have thought to do that. And who knew you could make your own milk paint? That had to be pretty inexpensive as well I would think. Thanks for the great video. Listening to you trying to talk above the deafening sound of nature around you at the beginning was nothing less than charming. It almost felt like we were sitting there with you on your porch!

This was interesting. I remember my Gram telling me the barns used to be "painted" red - farmers couldn't buy paint so they used....left over milk, cows blood and lime = "barn red" paint 👌

The dresser turned out beautifully. You should sell your own line of milk paint!

First, I love how your life goes on while filming. Kids and husbands and cats coming and going. Grown sons hugging moms always gets to me. Second. If you try white and need to add a colorant (if it’s not white enough on it’s own) I have a cookie business where I decorate cookies with royal icing and I use titanium dioxide (food grade) in my icing to make it whiter. It’s a powder. It’s in lots of foods and other products. It super whitens.

In the early 80's I worked for a company who did historic home renovations. Some of us girls made milk paint including boiled down blueberries. What a mess but what fun we had.
