Build Supplies:
Rope Float: amzn.to/2mNubyH
4"x24" PVC Pipe (Home Depot)
4" Floor Drain PVC Cap (Home Depot)
4" PVC Threaded Cap End (Home Depot)
This bait tube was created due to me being unhappy with existing options that worked well for kayaking. Not all my kayaks work well with my on-board homemade bait-tanks/livewells. Livewells on-board can add a lot of weight to the kayak (approx 8lbs/gallon). The in-water bait container options on the market created a ton of drag when paddling. Thus, I needed something more hydrodynamic that could tow smoothly while paddling. This is what I came up with after multiple revisions. This keeps my greenbacks (bait fish) happy until I need them. Thanks for watching the video. You can get more KayakDIY content via our other sites listed at end of video.

Love to see your ideas on producing large amounts of chum and suspending it at different depths.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 5 лет назад
Steve Wilcox depends heavily what you want to target. I see a lot of folks that chum for bait fish offshore and draw in the larger predator fish. Seen folks drop chum straight below the boat onto the bottom for grouper and snapper. Not sure I have a great answer yet on what the best methods are. Still learning.

Great stuff man, I just stumbled on this with a search. Im hoping I can stumble on some pvc at a job, materials are crazy priced right now.

Yeah prices are nuts. Use what you can find.

Put a couple of holes in the removable cap. It will allow a better flow of water into the bait with less restrictions when you are paddling.

Over here we put a funnel or cut down bottle at the front to create a sleaker profile . Also good to have both ends open so bait goes in head first from rear . Comes out head first from front . Some guys hinge each half so opens like clamshell along its length . These contraptions are good for squid as let's them blow there ink out . Ink is messy. . . ;^ )

Instead of gluing each end on , make end caps slide on/ off loosely .link each cap with bungee to stretch on and off main tube . Easy opening at both ends . Bungee holds caps on pulling towards each other.

Great video 👍 I just made mine, only thing I did was drill holes in cap.

Really think this is a great idea. I am in the process of buying my own kayak, and really interested in the way this item works. I wish u showed a video on the item in the water to see how it works . I am looking to use mine for shrimp or mullet .

+Matthew Rodriguez thanks for the feedback. I will try to put out better video tutorials and incorporate "after build" tests on the water.

A friendly suggestion is to drill a few holes in both caps, in that way when you tow it water will flow in and out circulating through the tube,,,,other is a great video and good job

+YBW0S0 not bad suggestion. Works either way. More holes the better really.

The holes on the 2 feet pvc pipe, did you have to drill them? Then had to file them so the sharp edges dull down? The holes look evenly drilled if you drilled them. I haven't been to Home Depot yet but I do home they have the pre-drilled PVC pipes for lazy guys like me.

Hey, if you don't mind, where did you get your T-shirts made?
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 7 лет назад
+Black Warrior Lures I designed them and produced them at Teespring website. They were ok but color retention after washes isn't as good as screen printing. TeeSpring appears to use sublimation or a cheaper process. However, if you are planning to have some shirts made I would look elsewhere. A local screen printing place quoted me at $14 for my logo on SPF30 long sleeve athletic shirts. They just had a minimum order of 20 pieces.

since pvc does not float how does it look in the water intrested in seeing it in action
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 4 года назад
Some PVC at Home Depot does actually float. The main tube portion had buoyancy. The main pvc pipe had a foam like inner layer and was lightweight. Fittings sink so they do decrease buoyancy some. Worked out pretty well....then I lost it on a trip few months back. Forgot it at a kayak launch area. I’m an idiot. Someone must have taken it before I got back to ramp. Couldn’t find it.

i have a very similar set up. but my shrimp die. not right away - but do die a little to soon. first I thought that I didn't have enough holes, so I added more(they still died) do you think the PVC maybe poisoning them?
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 6 лет назад
Don't think so. I don't think they would use it for house related plumbing if it was toxic. Could be the turbulence stress killing them. Shrimp can be difficult to keep alive. I have best luck keeping baitfish alive in these. Shrimp I usually run in a small container with bubbler. Shrimp just are too dang stubborn.

How well dose this disign work for pilchards and goggly eye? I wouod like to be able to use something like this and drift or slowtroll life bait without worrying.
@KayakDIY

+Daniel Delima goggly eye works well for. Haven't tried many pilchards. Very similar in design to these which are recently being sold. www.amazon.com/dp/B00QJNZBMY/?tag=ytk-20

Will this keep mullet alive??
@KayakDIY

+Salt Savage depending on quantity and size of bait. I kept some threadfin and smaller finger mullet alive.

how do you get the bait out? it's so deep
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 7 лет назад
+boomeris1337 Answer: I have pretty long arms. However, simply "slightly" tilting the tube allows greenbacks to slide to opening. Build to your particular needs.

I reach in? I have pretty long arms. I'm 6ft 2in tall (span about = to height). You could always tilt it to reach if you have T-Rex arms. haha.

Here's a bait tube I made last year and the folks at kayak angler magazine published my how to on their site. Use a pool noodle across the length of the tube to float it. www.rapidmedia.com/kayakangler/categories/skills/6680-rigging-skill-diy-bait-tube.html
