Excellent innovative engineering! I remember back when you built and were using the duplicator. Using it this way is just genius!

I was thinking that if you played around with the gear ratios and size of the timing belt pulleys you could get quite detailed in your carvings. Then I realised you probably already did that and just left those details out of the video so you didn't bore the audience. That idea is now stuck in my head because this idea is brilliant.

You are to be congratulated for your skills in making all of this work! It's too bad, however that Legacy opted several years ago to quit making their manually-driven Legacy mills and go to only CNC rigs. I have an old Revo which cost me about $900 15 years ago and turns every kind of spiral you can imagine with pitches from 1/2" to 15" on stock up to three feet long. You can still find the old Legacy mills on Craig's List, so if you don't have the skills to build a machine like Alex's, get a used mill. I'm saying up for their CNC machine.

Hi, Good to see you are still doing interesting things with and to wood. I noticed that the 90 degree direction attachment in your design (for using with a drill) was wobbling a bit as you operated your device. I don't know if your design would be improved if you could in some way grip the 90 degree attachment to remove the wobble. Then again, perhaps the wobble would just be transferred to some other part of the design!

I think I'll try something simpler. All thread to move the router. Then it's easy to pully or gear between that and the lathe spindle. Idler gear and tensioner if needed. =D I might mount the router behind or above the lathe so it can stay in place while the lathe is used as normal. =D

It looks like your lathe has a servo motor with encoder/break at the rear part. If so, why not digitalize your lathe? Using for instance Arduino and some servor motor driver.

Brilliant. Can you gear it tight enough to cut threads? Craftsman made a tool to do this years ago called the 'Router Crafter'.
@thiswoodwork
@thiswoodwork 9 лет назад
calisdad3 Thanks! Not easily. The best thing to do would be to replace the timing belt with a lead screw or threaded rod. That should provide a much lower linear, travel making it more suited to cutting threads.

That cassette/freewheel wouldnt wobble on an actual rear hub of a bicycle. Mounting it would be difficult though, most front forks cant fit a rear hub (maybe a fatbike fork would work) and mounting half of a bicycle into this jig wouldnt be easy either. Using a rear fork is probably easier, the bottom bracket could work as a pivot to put tension onto the chain or as just a mount. A folding bike with the right clearance would be perfect.

Impressive, but you're actually cutting a helix, not a spiral. If you worked at an angle so that the radius is changing as it turns (say if you started with a cone instead of a cylinder), then it would technically be a spiral.
