It’s call expanded metal sheet. Tip: you can weld half of a large washer where the expanded metal is trimmed to fit the pipe.

Well Tony, I would never have made a measurement mistake…, hahaha.., a least no more than a “dozen” on a project like this.., hahaha…! Those “fishmouth” notching points were things of beauty. I realize there are pieces of equipment to do those with, but your talents are amazing. Great video, Thank you sir.

Well, you cut up a perfectly good roof rack, then reassembled it to your own specifications and now it looks like OEM equipment on your RZR. Just as well that you stuffed up the length of that expanded metal, because it turned out to be an advantage in that as you said, you can carry tall stuff in that section when the toolbox isn't fitted. That was also a good idea the way you bolted the toolbox on with those reinforcing strips inside. It will be a lot stronger then just using bolts. The modifications and additions to the RZR have really worked out well, looking like OEM.

Fitzee, I see someone has already told you the name of the metal so all I can say is this type of video calms me down. In other words, I find this type of thing relaxing. I recently finished a project ( Box Grader) made from scrap metal plating that I got locally from a machine shop. It was left over from a project they had, and they always let me browse their scrap yard whenever I need something. Much cheaper than buying finished products sold retail especially with the state of our governing idiots in the U.S.A. right now causing all prices to accelerate. Keep up the videos, I have learned a lot of Tips and Tricks since I started watching your channel a few years back.

Nice job. The difference between experts and amateurs is that the expert expects to make mistakes and knows how to recover from them. It might be prudent to test the handling of the machine with a service load on the rack; the Centre of Gravity will be quite a bit higher than normal, which will affect roll stability.

The steel sheet is called Expanded Steel Sheet down here in PA. There's Steel,Aluminum,and many other materials. Didn't notice your roof and windshield was from a car.....got a few ideas within a couple seconds for a buddies new to him SXS to keep his costs low.Thought of maybe adding a rack for him but not real sure about the extra weight the rack would add.It'd make it top heavy and more rollover prone in a number of situations.
@mrb1864
@mrb1864 2 года назад
Well that worked out ideal, who would believe the box & rack be ideal pair match and width of rack ideal to the roll bar . saved a lot of work and a fair chunk of change . your pipe notch fish mouth tool was good way anyone could tackle this sort of pipe joining task, amazed got it fit that neat as when got that many pipes you generally get 1 or more that never the nicest fit when positioned true and square . The diamond mesh sheet worked great and possibly looks better, more adaptable and weight saving over being full length :-) sometime luck on your side or is it just another skill you learn to tackle errors positively . Good job, now get it on the trail and test it good and proper :-D

The only issue with expanded metal is the exposed edges tends to catch clothing if it isn't ground completely smooth. You can make a hammer form to bend the edges down so that the edges that are exposed fit down next to the piping instead of on top of it. Making a quick hammer form to make the rounded edges on the back corners out of plywood is pretty easy. It makes the overall look more finished fitting down inside the piping, plus it is easy to connect the expanded metal to the piping using washers and a few screws. You might want to use some rubber (or cork like they used to use on old gas tank straps) to keep the expanded metal from rattling against the pipes. If you don't have a cooler on back to hold it down it will drive you crazy pretty quickly. It will also keep the expanded metal from wearing into the pipes.

Good job on the retro-fit Tony, that rack will always come in handy, its sturdy enough to drag a marsh donkey home.. I was thinking if you mounted a 4 x 8 sheet of 5/8 plywood on top of that rack and the plywood was fitted in the middle with a piano hinge with two fold up legs, you now got the perfect platform to mount and anchor a two man tent up off the ground. With a foam mattress it would be like a 5 star hotel on wheels, a room with the view. How cool is that?

The fabrication work and explanation of processes is excellent as always. But I think a small lightweight trailer would be preferable to a solution that places the load up high where it raises the centre of gravity and makes the gear comparatively difficult to access. I bet you could have found an old 6 x 4 trailer for $50 and cut it down to just take the box and a couple of jerry cans.
@fitzeesfabrications
