Homemade Timber Trailer PROPER TEST

Testing homemade 4x4 timber trailer with Forstman hydraulic crane by hauling huge dried up spruce and branches out of the forest. This is a real back saver. It is not as efficient as proper forwarders but is perfect for private use.
Things I want to change or add:
1) replace the separate hydraulic power pack with on-board hydraulics on the UTV;
2) add a telescopic section to the boom to make the work radius bigger
3) find a solution to the trailer vs UTV different turning circles and thus binding of the PTO shaft when sharply cornering
4) add more log dogs to better facilitate branch hauling
5) automatic gearbox on the UTV to make driving easier

The hydraulic trailer steering is the ticket for navigating around trees on a narrow trail! My back is asking why we don't have a cherry picker like Donn's. The boom winch is a real labor saver especially changing the winch angle on the fly.

@mihkus
@mihkus Год назад
It only needs electromagnetic clutch or just lock. You hardly ever need all wheel drive. Only in conditions where wheelspin is inevitable and there such little difference makes no difference Most logging trailers just have hydraulic motors that lock into the wheel threads which is rather poor and cheap design

I don’t know what to say. Awesome comes to mind. Mass market. People would buy this. Does the work of 4 to 6 men easily. Incredible. Lifting the big logs causes some flex here and there and I wonder if repeated use would cause some weld failure at the base of the arm. Its a great machine. I didn’t think that grapple would handle those logs. Good job.

It's jmo but I'd like to be able to haul more branches in each load. 1] by changing the shape of the dogs to mirror the grappling hooks [narrower/much taller/3 per side] and 2] then add D-rings [2 per side], to use with the "speed or torque drive binders" that have an approx load limit of 5k to 13k lb ea. depending. Two on each side with a 3" to 4" strap *will* compress a trailer *"full"* of branches down considerably to make room for more. Just a thought. Btw, the reason for the "U-shaped dogs" would be to allow the branches to easily compress into that curved shape. Also, *I'm very glad I found this channel.*

For the binding, if Lego has taught me anything is that more universal joints fix the problem. For the brush/branch problem just make some wooden panels that use the log dogs to hang off of or span between. You obviously have trees that are big enough to make the boards out of.

Donn - I have been watching this build with great interest. I want to do something similar (driven axle trailer with walking beam tandems) for forwarding small trees/poles, using gear drive Cub Cadet garden tractor parts (cheap and tough). Congrats on your successful build! Regarding your improvement #3, I have a few ideas (some not so good, but I'll throw them out there, anyway!). - add double Cardan or Birfield/Rzeppa joints at both ends of the drive shaft. I think I would try to salvage the constant velocity joints from a front wheel or all wheel drive car. - add a swivelling carrier bearing somewhere in the middle, so you can put more Cardan joints in the driveline, to share the turn angle among more joints - make a clutch which disengages the drive shaft at tight turn angles (maybe necessary at both ends of the shaft); this isn't so good, because you might need the trailer axle drive in a gnarly situation with tight turns! - eliminate the mechanical driveshaft and replace it with a hydrostatic setup; two pumps/motors, plumbed together, probably with a reservoir to help keep the hydraulic oil cooler, but maybe just an inline cooler rated for pressure would work; only the hoses connecting the two motors need to make the bend - make the trailer wheels steerable (probably counter steer, but maybe a crab steer mode would be a useful option); this would be cool, but would require a complete rebuild of the trailer, and salvaging a couple of front wheel drive axles from a light truck or something; this solution also gives up the option of using over-the-tire tracks for more flotation in soft mud or deep snow, and winter is usually logging season, at least where I live Those are my "off the cuff" thoughts!
