Our bodies use the process of homeostasis to keep internal conditions the same throughout our day and throughout our lives. In this video, I give my favorite metaphor for learning homeostasis, then go through detailed examples of blood pressure and body temperature negative feedback loops.

You explained this idea pretty well. I studied this in biology class in high school and it's fascinating to learn it again in English (although the medical English is pretty hard for me) . Using the ruler is a great way to learn this concept intuitively. When I was in high school, we also learn about the negative feedback loop through how the insulin and the glucagon controls blood glucose level before and after eating. I've been learning a lot from your channel!😄

What would happen if a negative feedback mechanism did not return the value of some parameter such as blood pressure to its normal range?
@SiebertScience
@SiebertScience 3 года назад
Hey, great question! This may be an oversimplification, but if the negative feedback mechanism is not returning the value to its normal range, the person likely needs medical intervention to fix whatever is not working correctly. E.g., if someone’s blood calcium is not returning to normal ranges, they might have a parathyroid tumor that needs to be removed, or they might need to intake more calcium. In many mechanisms, if no intervention is taken, it could lead to sickness or death eventually.
